Velocardiofacial syndrome (VCFS), also known as 22q11.2 deletion syndrome, is a neurogenetic disorder that is associated with both learning disabilities and a consistent neuropsychological phenotype, including deficits in executive function, visuospatial perception, and working memory. Anatomic imaging studies have identified significant volumetric reductions in the parietal lobe of individuals with VCFS, but several studies have reported that the frontal lobe is relatively preserved.

Chronic pain can result in anxiety, depression and reduced quality of life. However, its effects on cognitive abilities have remained unclear although many studies attempted to psychologically profile chronic pain. We hypothesized that performance on an emotional decision-making task may be impaired in chronic pain since human brain imaging studies show that brain regions critical for this ability are also involved in chronic pain.

This study investigated the effect of hyperoxia on sensorimotorcortical activity resulting from electrical stimulation of the median nerve, using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Nine volunteers underwent stimulation at 5 and 100 Hz while breathing 21% FIO(2) (fraction of inspired oxygen) or 100% FIO(2). fMRI data were correlated with a stimulus predictor curve, transformed into Talairach space and averaged by group.

Many ants forage at extrafloral nectar on plants and provide the plant with some measure of protection from herbivory. These nectars contain sugars, amino acids and, often, other compounds. The role of amino acids in attracting ants to extrafloral nectars was studied by baiting with Karo-syrup-based solutions.
