Background/objectives: Despite the growing recognition of housing as a significant concern for individuals with a spinal cord injury/dysfunction (SCI/D), there is limited research available on this topic. This scoping review aimed to identify and describe the literature on housing across the continuum for people with an SCI/D.

Methods: This review utilized Arksey and O'Malley's scoping review framework.

Objective: To measure the effect of a community-based peer-led eHealth manual wheelchair (MWC) skills training program on community participation, wheelchair skills capacity and performance, wheelchair-specific self-efficacy, and health-related quality of life.

Design: Randomized control trial with wait-list control group.

Setting: Community.

Community-based physical activity programmes benefit persons with disabilities. However, there is a lack of evidence-based tools to support kinesiologists' training in such programmes. This study aimed to co-create and evaluate physical activity training modules for community-based adapted physical activity (APA) programmes.

Background: The clinical landscape of limb loss rehabilitation across Canada is poorly delineated, lacks standard rehabilitation guidelines, and is without a shared clinical database.

Objective: To address these gaps, the objective of the present study was to undertake an environmental scan of the rehabilitation centers across Canada that provide inpatient and/or outpatient services to the limb loss community.

Study Design: An environmental scan was conducted to describe the rehabilitation service structure, program services, and outcome measures of sites across Canada.

Purpose: The relationship between quality of life (QoL) and frailty has previously been investigated cross-sectionally and longitudinally as unidirectional where QoL depends upon frailty and where frailty depends on QoL. Here a bidirectional relationship is examined.

Methods: This work uses a latent curve model with structured residuals to address the bidirectional association between QoL and frailty in older English people considering within-person and group levels.

Introduction: Lassa fever is a zoonotic infectious disease endemic in West Africa with a high case-fatality rate and reported stigmatization of surviving patients. This study examines discrimination among survivors of Lassa fever (LF) complicated by hearing loss (HL).

Methods: This cross-sectional qualitative study used an in-depth interview guide to collect information from patients with HL about their experience of stigma.

Background: Pain is a significant burden for children with neurodevelopmental disabilities but is difficult for clinicians to identify. No pain assessment tools for children with neurodevelopmental disabilities have been validated for use in pediatric intensive care units. The Individualized Numeric Rating Scale (INRS) is an adapted 0-to-10 rating that includes parents' input on their child's pain indicators.

Walking patterns are modified during load carriage, resulting in an increased activation of lower limb muscles and energy expenditure. Negative effects of load carriage could be minimized by wearing an exoskeleton, but evidence on the effects are conflicting. The objectives of this study were to describe the influence of an adjustable, passive load-bearing exoskeleton on the metabolic cost of walking (MCW) and associated muscle activations, and to explore changes in MCW after a familiarization process.

Introduction: Numerous tools have been developed to measure constructs related to wheelchair use. Currently, no toolkit comprehensively details assessments of wheeled mobility device use based on the quality of their measurement properties. The current review aims to systematically identify high-quality assessment tools that measure different aspects of wheeled mobility use.

Pregnant women are advised to take folic acid (FA) supplements before conception and during the first trimester of pregnancy. Many women continue FA supplementation throughout pregnancy, and concerns have been raised about associations between excessive FA intake and adverse maternal and child health outcomes. Unmetabolized folic acid (UMFA) is found in serum after high FA intakes and is proposed as a biomarker for excessive FA intake.

Background: People with disabilities (PWD) commonly experience difficulties in accessing their environments, which can lead to restricted participation in outdoor leisure-time physical activity. Participating in outdoor leisure-time physical activity (OLTPA) provides health and social benefits to PWD and benefits to the communities in which they live.

Objective: The aim of the study was to identify features existing in digital platforms that facilitate access to OLTPA for PWD.

The Health App Review Tool (HART) is an evaluation tool that is designed to help the users in evaluation of the health apps for Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias (ADRD) population. As the development of the HART continues, the domain items that HART addresses require evaluation to determine if they meet the intended required criteria for the users. To complete content validation of the HART 10 health care professions provided content validation of the HART via a content validation form.

Article Synopsis
  • Iron deficiency is the most widespread nutritional deficiency globally, especially impacting young children and women of reproductive age, leading to the investigation of its effects on gut microbiota.
  • A double-blind, randomized control trial was conducted in South Australia, where nonpregnant females aged 18-45 were given either iron supplements or a placebo for 21 days to assess changes in their gut microbiome.
  • Results showed no significant differences in the gut microbiome between the iron and placebo groups, indicating that iron supplementation did not alter the microbiota of these women.

Background: Falls are common in older adults and can devastate personal independence through injury such as fracture and fear of future falls. Methods to identify people for falls prevention interventions are currently limited, with high risks of bias in published prediction models. We have developed and externally validated the eFalls prediction model using routinely collected primary care electronic health records (EHR) to predict risk of emergency department attendance/hospitalisation with fall or fracture within 1 year.

Aim: Pre-arrest morbidity in adults who suffer out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) is associated with increased mortality and poorer neurologic outcomes. The objective of this study was to determine if a similar association is seen in pediatric patients.

Methods: We performed a secondary analysis of data from the Therapeutic Hypothermia after Pediatric Cardiac Arrest Out-of-Hospital trial.

Purpose: The Wheelchair Skills Training Program (WSTP) is underutilized in pediatrics for training manual wheelchair skills because the voluminous manual lacks pediatric specificity and no materials adapted for pediatric manual wheelchair users (PMWUs) are available. A set of resources (storybook, posters, training workbook) based on the WSTP has previously been developed for training basic indoor wheelchair skills with five to 15-year-old PMWUs. Occupational therapists (OTs) and PMWUs expressed a need for additional resources addressing higher-level skills.

Within coastal communities, sea level rise (SLR) will result in widespread intermittent flooding and long-term inundation. Inundation effects will be evident, but isolation that arises from the loss of accessibility to critical services due to inundation of transportation networks may be less obvious. We examine who is most at risk of isolation due to SLR, which can inform community adaptation plans and help ensure that existing social vulnerabilities are not exacerbated.

Purpose: The ehabilitation nterventions for ndividuals with a pinal Cord Injury in the ommunity (RIISC) team aimed to develop and evaluate innovative rehabilitation interventions to identify endocrine metabolic disease (EMD) risk, intending to reduce the frequency and severity of EMD related morbidity and mortality among adults living with chronic spinal cord injury or disease (SCI/D).

Materials And Methods: An interprovincial team from Ontario and Quebec reviewed available EMD literature and evidence syntheses and completed an inventory of health services, policies and practices in SCI/D care. The review outcomes were combined with expert opinion to create an EMD risk model to inform health service transformation.
