To enhance understanding of the biomechanical role of the intervertebral disc, the compressive properties and biochemical composition of nondegenerate samples of anulus fibrosus were determined as a function of radial position, region, and level. Because of the large swelling propensity of this tissue, a method was developed to test excised specimens while maintaining their in situ geometry and hydration. Using an analysis based on linear biphasic theory, the compressive modulus, hydraulic permeability, and isometric swelling pressure of the anulus fibrosus were determined and correlated with the tissue composition.

Many animals from different phyla use structures bearing arrays of hairs to perform a variety of important functions, such as olfaction, gas exchange, suspension feeding and locomotion. The performance of all these functions depends on the motion of water or air around and through these arrays of hairs. Because organisms often move such hair-bearing appendages with respect to their bodies or the substratum, we assessed the effects of such motion relative to walls on the fluid flow between neighboring hairs.

The gag-homologous region of the human endogenous retrovirus K10 (HERV-K10) was amplified by PCR from human genomic DNA and was analyzed by DNA cloning, sequencing, and expression of open reading frames in the prokaryotic pATH expression system. The analysis of genomic DNA of three donors provided evidence that HERV-K10 genes contain an open reading frame of 1966 bp spanning the entire gag-homologous region. In the prokaryotic system the entire reading frame of the HERV-K10 gag gene could be expressed as a fusion protein exhibiting a molecular weight of about 110,000.

Magnetic resonance imaging was used to determine the T2 relaxation times of prepared proteoglycan solutions and of normal human intervertebral disc tissue from the annulus fibrosus (AF) and nucleus pulposus (NP). The collagen, proteoglycan, and water contents of the disc tissue samples were determined by biochemical assays after they were scanned. Correlations among 1/T2, collagen, proteoglycan, and water contents of the tissue samples and among 1/T2, water, and proteoglycan contents of the proteoglycan solutions were calculated.

One hundred thirty-eight strains of adenovirus type 3 isolated from patients in the United States, West Germany, and other regions between 1961 and 1984 were analyzed with six restriction endonucleases; 18 genome types were found. BglII was the most discriminative enzyme. Mapping of altered restriction sites was also performed for all six enzymes.

Seven adenovirus strains of subgenus D, related to adenovirus types 8, 10, 13, 19, 23, 24 and 26, but atypical in their serological reactions or in hemagglutinin properties, were characterized by neutralization and hemagglutination-inhibition. DNA restriction analysis with five endonucleases showed that each of the strains was strikingly different from the respective prototype.

Encrusting cheilostome bryozoans structurally resemble aggregates of small boxes, with both frontal and vertical walls capable of resisting forces generated by water-borne debris or predators. Both the skeletal strength and design of the walls are important in determining the relative ability of the colony to resist damage. Two mechanical tests, puncture and compression, performed on nine species of tropical bryozoans reveal significant differences in skeletal strength both between species and between the outer and inner regions of colonies.

The differential nerve block produced by ischaemia has been used in an attempt to identify the afferent nerve fibres responsible for vibratory inhibition of the monosynaptic reflex in man. It is concluded that the inhibition arises mainly from receptors in the lower leg and is carried by myelinated afferent fibres larger than A-delta.
