Camptothecin-like compounds are actively employed as anticancer drugs in clinical treatments. The aromathecin family of compounds, which contains the same indazolidine core structure as the camptothecin family of compounds, is also expected to display promising anticancer activity. Therefore, the development of a suitable and scalable synthetic method of aromathecin synthesis is of great research interest.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to improve the retrieval of colonic polyps post-surgery, as traditional methods often lead to fragmenting the tissue, complicating diagnosis.
  • - Researchers introduced the "water-slider method" (WSM) to surround resected polyps with water to reduce fragmentation during retrieval, and compared its effectiveness to standard methods in a controlled trial.
  • - Results showed the WSM significantly reduced fragmentation rates for small polyps (8.2% vs. 23.8%), enabling better diagnostic accuracy, while retrieval times remained similar between the two methods.

A 3-month alcoholism rehabilitation program at psychiatric hospitals is common in Japan for patients with alcohol use disorder (AUD). However, many AUD patients are often hospitalized for the treatment of digestive disorders due to alcohol-related liver diseases and pancreatitis. In this sense, AUD patients need to be better supported by professionals and departments in general hospitals.

Congenital absence of the portal vein (CAPV) is a rare malformation in which intestinal and splenic venous blood bypasses the liver and drains into systemic veins. CAPV is classified into two types based on the absence (type I) or presence (type II) of portal venous flow into the hepatic parenchyma and is associated with multiple other anomalies such as usually benign hepatic tumors. There have been only two case reports describing hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in patients with CAPV type II to date.

Oral cancer screening is important for early detection and early treatment, which help improve survival rates. Biopsy is invasive and painful, while fluorescence visualization using optical instruments is non-invasive, convenient, and provides results in real time, and examinations can be repeated. The purpose of this study was to determine the usefulness of optical instruments in oral screening.

Introduction: The number of treatment options for metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer has increased in recent years. Abiraterone, which selectively inhibits CYP17 in the androgen synthesis pathway, is widely used. Liver metastasis is one of the worst prognostic factors in metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer.

We conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) on the outcome of anti-VEGF treatment for exudative age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in a prospective cohort. Four hundred and sixty-one treatment-naïve AMD patients were recruited at 13 clinical centers and all patients were treated with 3 monthly injections of ranibizumab followed by pro re nata regimen treatment for one year. Genomic DNA was collected from all patients for a 2-stage GWAS on achieving dry macula after the initial treatment, the requirement for an additional treatment, and visual acuity changes during the 12-month observation period.

A bifid ureter with a distal blind-ending branch is a rare congenital anomaly. Most patients are asymptomatic; only patients with complications, such as infection, vesicoureteral reflux, or stone formation, present symptoms. We describe the case of a patient with urinary stone located in the distal blind-ending branch of a bifid ureter diagnosed during transurethral lithotripsy.

Background: Von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) syndrome is a dominantly inherited multisystem cancer syndrome caused by a heterozygous mutation in the VHL tumor suppressor gene. Previous studies suggested that similar populations of Caucasian and Japanese patients have similar genotype or phenotype characteristics. In this comprehensive study of East Asian patients, we investigated the genetic and clinical characteristics of patients with VHL syndrome.

The blockade of VEGF pathway has been clinically validated as an initial treatment for renal cell carcinoma (RCC). Angiopoietin-2 (Ang-2) has been indicated as a key regulator for angiogenesis escape. The effect of a novel bispecific antibody (A2V CrossMab) against both Ang-2 and VEGF was investigated in comparison with either factor.

Background/aim: Placental growth factor (PlGF) is up-regulated in major malignant diseases or following antiangiogenic therapy, although it is present in low levels under normal physiological conditions. TB403, a monoclonal antibody against PlGF, was investigated in clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) xenografts since it has been proposed as a potential target in oncology.

Materials And Methods: Human ccRCCs were implanted in athymic nude mice to evaluate the efficacy of TB403 and to excise xenograft tumors for molecular experiments.

A method was developed to obtain the absorption coefficient spectrum of a grain of coal (as small as 10(-7)) in the region of aliphatic and aromatic C-H stretching bands (2700-3200 cm(-1)) using infrared transflection microspectroscopy. In this method, the complex refractive index n - ik was determined using an optimization algorithm with the Kramers-Kronig transform so that the calculated transflection spectrum from the Fresnel equation corresponded to the measured one. The obtained absorption coefficients were compared with the bulk values determined from the potassium bromide (KBr) pellet measurement method.

A schwannoma is a benign tumor composed of schwann cells which forms on the periphery of nerves. We report a case of a schwannoma derived from a lingual nerve occurring in the floor of the mouth. The patient was a 27-year-old woman who presented with the complaint of a swelling in the floor of the mouth.

Purpose: To clarify the association between cluster of differentiation 36 (CD36) gene polymorphisms and the response to photodynamic therapy (PDT) in polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV).

Methods: One hundred and thirty-seven patients with PCV were enrolled. The patients were treated with PDT and followed up for more than 6 months.

Purpose: To clarify the association of cluster of differentiation 36 (CD36) variants with polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV) and compare them with those in typical neovascular age-related macular degeneration (tAMD).

Methods: We included 349 Japanese AMD patients (210 PCV, 139 tAMD) and 198 age-matched controls. Four tag single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs)-rs10499862, rs3173798, rs3211883, and rs3173800-in the CD36 region were genotyped using the TaqMan assay.

We present a case of myocardial metastasis from renal cell carcinoma (RCC) during the treatment with sorafenib. A 63-year-old male, who had undergone right radical nephrectomy, received interferon-alpha (IFN), interleukin (IL-2) and 5-flurouracil (5-FU) for the treatment of lung and pleural metastases. However, since this metastasis showed progressive disease, we administered sorafenib.

Purpose: To determine the association of age-related maculopathy susceptibility 2 (ARMS2) gene polymorphisms with the phenotype of typical neovascular age-related macular degeneration (tAMD) and polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV) and the effects of photodynamic therapy (PDT).

Methods: The single nucleotide polymorphisms at rs10490924 (A69S) in ARMS2 of 68 tAMD and 119 PCV patients who underwent PDT were genotyped using the TaqMan assay. The baseline best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and lesion size were compared among the three genotypes at rs10490924.
