Achieving Top National Mpox Vaccination Coverage for Gay, Bisexual, and Other Men Who Have Sex with Men in Rhode Island: The Critical Role of Community Engagement, Public Health Collaboration, and Health Equity.

Since 2022, mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) has emerged as a sexually-associated infection that disproportionately impacts gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM). Fortunately, the JYNNEOS vaccine, which was initially developed for smallpox, has demonstrated significant efficacy against mpox and was distributed across the United States. In January 2024, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that Rhode Island ranked first among the 50 states for rates of full vaccination coverage (two doses) against mpox among people at increased risk including GBMSM, and second among the 50 states for rates of partial vaccination (single dose).

HIV and Other Sexually Transmitted Infections in Rhode Island: Trends, Disparities, and Health Equity.

Over the past 10 years, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) have seen a significant resurgence in the United States despite the availability of effective treatments and reliable prevention methods. Rhode Island has experienced a similar uptick in the incidence of syphilis, chlamydia and gonorrhea, with many cases occurring among gay, bisexual, men who have sex with men (GBMSM), which coincides with a recent concerning rise in congenital syphilis cases. We reviewed the most recent STI trends for the state of Rhode Island in 2022.

Structural insights into epitope-paratope interactions of a monoclonal antibody targeting CEACAM5-expressing tumors.

Carcinoembryonic antigen-related cell adhesion molecules (CEACAMs) are overexpressed in some tumor types. The antibody-drug conjugate tusamitamab ravtansine specifically recognizes the A3-B3 domains of human CEACAM5 (hCEACAM5). To understand this specificity, here we map the epitope-paratope interface between the A3-B3 domains of hCEACAM5 (hCEACAM5) and the antigen-binding fragment of tusamitamab (tusa Fab).

Prospective Evaluation of Routine Statewide Integration of Molecular Epidemiology and Contact Tracing to Disrupt Human Immunodeficiency Virus Transmission.

Background: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) remains a global challenge and novel measures for transmission disruption are needed. Contact tracing is limited by reluctance or inability of newly diagnosed individuals to name at-risk contacts. Molecular cluster analysis is mostly used for outbreak investigations, and its role in routine public health activities remains uncertain.

Introduction: The high incidence of morbidity and mortality associated with the post-cardiac arrest (CA) period highlights the need for novel therapeutic interventions to improve the outcome of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). The aim of this study is to assess the ability of high-dose intravenous vitamin C (Vit-C) to improve post-CA shock.

Methods And Analysis: This is a single-blind, open-label, multicentre, randomised controlled trial, involving 234 OHCA patients with post-CA shock planned to be enrolled in 10 French ICUs.

How obliquity has differently shaped Pluto's and Triton's landscapes and climates.

Triton and Pluto are believed to share a common origin, both forming initially in the Kuiper Belt but Triton being later captured by Neptune. Both objects display similar sizes, densities, and atmospheric and surface ice composition, with the presence of volatile ices N, CH, and CO. Yet their appearance, including their surface albedo and ice distribution strongly differ.

Integrating HIV Cluster Analysis in Everyday Public Health Practice: Lessons Learned From a Public Health--Academic Partnership.

Background: The use of molecular HIV cluster analysis to supplement public health contact tracing has shown promise in addressing HIV outbreaks. However, the potential of HIV cluster analysis as an adjunct to daily, person-by-person HIV prevention efforts remains unknown. We documented lessons learned within a unique public health-academic partnership while guiding workaday HIV prevention efforts with near-real-time molecular cluster analysis.

Scalable high-throughput microfluidic separation of magnetic microparticles.

Surface-engineered magnetic microparticles are used in chemical and biomedical engineering due to their ease of synthesis, high surface-to-volume ratio, selective binding, and magnetic separation. To separate them from fluid suspensions, existing methods rely on the magnetic force introduced by the local magnetic field gradient. However, this strategy has poor scalability because the magnetic field gradient decreases rapidly as one moves away from the magnets.

Acquired Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 Drug Resistance in Rhode Island, USA, 2004-2021.

Background: Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) acquired drug resistance (ADR) compromises antiretroviral therapy (ART).

Methods: We aggregated all HIV-1 protease-reverse transcriptase-integrase sequences over 2004-2021 at the largest HIV center in Rhode Island and evaluated ADR extent, trends, and impact using Stanford Database tools. Trends were measured with Mann-Kendall statistic, and multivariable regressions evaluated resistance predictors.

Vena cava leiomyosarcoma surgery results in a retrospective cohort of 41 patients from two centers.

Background: Leiomyosarcoma of the vena cava (LMS-VC) is a rare entity with poor oncological outcomes and a lack of histological staging prognostic factors.

Methods: Outcomes of consecutive patients operated on LMS-VC between March 2003 and May 2022, in two specialized sarcoma centers were reported.

Result: Forty-one patients were identified.

Management of neo-esophagus-airway fistula after esophagectomy for oesophageal cancer: systematic literature review and meta-analysis.

Objectives: Neo-oesophageal-airway fistula (NEAF) between gastric conduit and airway is a rare but life-threatening complication of oesophagectomy for oesophageal cancer. Optimal treatment remains unknown. A meta-analysis of good-quality case series may help determine whether nonoperative management (NOM) only, upfront surgery (S), or NOM followed by surgery is associated with better 1-year post-treatment mortality, resumption of oral diet and fistula recurrence.

Low Rate of Early Periprosthetic Fractures in Direct Anterior Total Hip Arthroplasty with a Triple-Tapered Wedge Stem.

Introduction: Utilization of the direct anterior approach (DAA) for total hip arthroplasty (THA) has been steadily increasing in recent years. While the DAA may offer some benefits compared to other approaches, there are still risks involved including relatively higher rates of periprosthetic femur fractures, especially when combined with cementless femoral stem use. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the early postoperative femoral complications with a short triple-wedge tapered stem used in primary THA via a DAA.

Integration of Partner Notification Services at a Sexually Transmitted Infections Clinic.

Objectives: PNS is critical to prevent the spread of STIs. We evaluated the feasibility of integrating PNS into an STI clinic focused on MSM.

Design/methods: The RI STI Clinic, in partnership with the RIDOH, implemented a PNS program in 2019.

The Mars Sample Return mission intends to retrieve a sealed collection of rocks, regolith, and atmosphere sampled from Jezero Crater, Mars, by the NASA Perseverance rover mission. For all life-related research, it is necessary to evaluate water availability in the samples and on Mars. Within the first Martian year, Perseverance has acquired an estimated total mass of 355 g of rocks and regolith, and 38 μmoles of Martian atmospheric gas.

Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Care Cascade Among Men Who Have Sex with Men Engaging in Partner Notification Services at a Sexually Transmitted Infections Clinic.

Partner notification services (PNS) offers opportunities to discuss HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and provide referrals. We evaluated the PrEP care cascade among men who have sex with men (MSM) engaging in PNS within a sexually transmitted infections clinic. Among 121 MSM eligible for PrEP during PNS, 21% subsequently initiated PrEP.

Surgical cervicothoracic-flap repair of neoesophagus-airway fistula after esophagectomy for esophageal cancer: A retrospective cohort study.

Objective: To evaluate outcomes of surgical repair of postesophagectomy neoesophagus-airway fistulas (NEAFs).

Methods: We retrospectively included consecutive patients with NEAF managed by various techniques at our center between August 2009 and July 2021.

Result: Of the 11 patients (median age, 60 years; interquartile range, 58, 62), 4 had received induction chemoradiotherapy and 4 others induction chemotherapy.

Active nematics is an emerging paradigm for characterizing biological systems. One aspect of particularly intense focus is the role active nematic defects play in these systems, as they have been found to mediate a growing number of biological processes. Accurately detecting and classifying these defects in biological systems is, therefore, of vital importance to improving our understanding of such processes.

An acoustic investigation of the near-surface turbulence on Mars.

The Perseverance rover is carrying out an original acoustic experiment on Mars: the SuperCam microphone records the spherical acoustic waves generated by laser sparks at distances from 2 m to more than 8 m. These N-shaped acoustic waves scatter from the multiple local heterogeneities of the turbulent atmosphere. Therefore, large and random fluctuations of sound travel time and intensity develop as the waves cross the medium.

Irreversibility across a Nonreciprocal PT-Symmetry-Breaking Phase Transition.

Nonreciprocal interactions are commonplace in continuum-level descriptions of both biological and synthetic active matter, yet studies addressing their implications for time reversibility have so far been limited to microscopic models. Here, we derive a general expression for the average rate of informational entropy production in the most generic mixture of conserved phase fields with nonreciprocal couplings and additive conservative noise. For the particular case of a binary system with Cahn-Hilliard dynamics augmented by nonreciprocal cross-diffusion terms, we observe a nontrivial scaling of the entropy production rate across a parity-time symmetry breaking phase transition.

Solving the stochastic dynamics of population growth.

Population growth is a fundamental process in ecology and evolution. The population size dynamics during growth are often described by deterministic equations derived from kinetic models. Here, we simulate several population growth models and compare the size averaged over many stochastic realizations with the deterministic predictions.
