Dissolved helium atoms evaporate from liquids in super-Maxwellian speed distributions because their interactions are too weak to enforce full thermal equilibration at the surface as they are "squeezed" out of solution. The excess speeds of these He atoms reflect their final interactions with solvent and solute molecules at the surfaces of water and other liquids. We extend this observation by monitoring He atom evaporation from salty water solutions coated with surfactants.

Atmospheric aerosols facilitate reactions between ambient gases and dissolved species. Here, we review our efforts to interrogate the uptake of these gases and the mechanisms of their reactions both theoretically and experimentally. We highlight the fascinating behavior of NO in solutions ranging from pure water to complex mixtures, chosen because its aerosol-mediated reactions significantly impact global ozone, hydroxyl, and methane concentrations.

Selected renal cells (SRCs), a renal epithelial cell-enriched platform, are being advanced as an autologous cell-based therapy for the treatment of chronic kidney disease. However, the mechanism underlying its renal reparative and restorative effects remains to be fully elucidated. In this study, we coupled knowledgebase data with empirical findings to demonstrate that genes differentially expressed by SRCs form interactomes within tubules and glomeruli and mediate a suite of renal developmental activities including epithelial cell differentiation, renal vasculature development, and glomerular and nephron development.

The Lake Michigan Ozone Study 2017 (LMOS 2017) was a collaborative multiagency field study targeting ozone chemistry, meteorology, and air quality observations in the southern Lake Michigan area. The primary objective of LMOS 2017 was to provide measurements to improve air quality modeling of the complex meteorological and chemical environment in the region. LMOS 2017 science questions included spatiotemporal assessment of nitrogen oxides (NO = NO + NO) and volatile organic compounds (VOC) emission sources and their influence on ozone episodes; the role of lake breezes; contribution of new remote sensing tools such as GeoTASO, Pandora, and TEMPO to air quality management; and evaluation of photochemical grid models.

The oxidation products of dimethyl sulfide (DMS) contribute to the production and growth of cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) in the marine boundary layer. Recent work demonstrates that DMS is oxidized by OH radicals to the stable intermediate hydroperoxymethyl thioformate (HPMTF), which is both globally ubiquitous and efficiently lost to multiphase processes in the marine atmosphere. At present, there are no experimental measurements of the reactive uptake of HPMTF to aerosol particles, limiting model implementation of multiphase HPMTF chemistry.

Major depressive disorder (MDD), anxiety disorders (ANX), and chronic pain (CP) are closely-related disorders with both high degrees of comorbidity among them and shared risk factors. Considering this multi-level overlap, but also the distinct phenotypes of the disorders, we hypothesized both common and disorder-specific changes of large-scale brain systems, which mediate neural mechanisms and impaired behavioral traits, in MDD, ANX, and CP. To identify such common and disorder-specific brain changes, we conducted a transdiagnostic, multimodal meta-analysis of structural and functional MRI-studies investigating changes of gray matter volume (GMV) and intrinsic functional connectivity (iFC) of large-scale intrinsic brain networks across MDD, ANX, and CP.

Background: Cell therapies explore unmet clinical needs of patients with chronic kidney disease with the potential to alter the pathway toward end-stage kidney disease. We describe the design and baseline patient characteristics of a phase II multicenter clinical trial utilizing the novel renal autologous cell therapy (REACT), by direct kidney parenchymal injection via the percutaneous approach in adults with type 2 diabetic kidney disease (T2DKD), to delay or potentially avoid renal replacement therapy.

Design: The study conducted a prospective, multicenter, randomized control, open-label, phase II clinical trial between an active treatment group (ATG) receiving REACT from the beginning of the trial and a contemporaneous deferred treatment group (DTG) receiving standard of care for 12 months before crossing over to receive REACT.

Organic emissions from coastal waters play an important but poorly understood role in atmospheric chemistry in coastal regions. A mesocosm experiment focusing on facilitated biological blooms in coastal seawater, SeaSCAPE (Sea Spray Chemistry and Particle Evolution), was performed to study emission of volatile gases, primary sea spray aerosol, and formation of secondary marine aerosol as a function of ocean biological and chemical processes. In this work, we present the Wisconsin Oscillator, a small, inexpensive, low-power circuit for powering ion-guiding devices such as multipole ion guides, ion funnels, active ion-mobility devices, and non-mass-selective ion traps. The circuit can be constructed for under $30 and produces two antiphase RF waveforms of up to 250 V in the high kilohertz to low megahertz range while drawing less than 1 W of power. Oceans emit large quantities of dimethyl sulfide (DMS) to the marine atmosphere.
