We use a configuration-interaction approach and the Fermi golden rule to investigate electron-phonon interaction in multielectron quantum dots. Lifetimes are computed in the low-density, highly correlated regime. We report numerical evidence that electron-electron interaction generally leads to reduced decay rates of excited electronic states in weakly confined quantum dots, where carrier relaxation is dominated by the interaction with longitudinal acoustic phonons.

Background: Increasing convergence in the management of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and unstable angina (UA) has led some to consider whether these 2 diagnoses should be consolidated into acute coronary syndrome (ACS) for the purpose of coronary heart disease surveillance.

Methods: We used the 1988-2001 Nationwide Inpatient Sample, which has demographic and diagnosis data on 6 to 7 million discharges per year from a sample of US nonfederal hospitals. We identified discharges with a first- or all-listed diagnosis of AMI ( International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification 410) or UA (International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification 411) and defined ACS-first as a primary diagnosis of either condition and all-listed ACS as codes 410 or 411 among any diagnoses.

Binding of thrombopoietin (TPO) to the cMpl receptor on human platelets potentiates aggregation induced by a number of agonists, including ADP. In this work, we found that TPO was able to restore ADP-induced platelet aggregation upon blockade of the G(q)-coupled P2Y1 purinergic receptor but not upon inhibition of the G(i)-coupled P2Y12 receptor. Moreover, TPO triggered platelet aggregation upon co-stimulation of G(z) by epinephrine but not upon co-stimulation of G(q) by the thromboxane analogue U46619.

Objective: To examine recent trends in racial and ethnic disparities in cardiac catheterization for acute myocardial infarction (AMI) to determine whether disparities documented from the 1980s through mid-1990s persist, and evaluate whether patient and hospital characteristics are associated with any observed disparities

Methods: Cross-sectional analyses of 585,710 white, 51,369 black and 31,923 Hispanic discharges from hospitals in the Nationwide Inpatient Sample (which includes data on all discharges from 951 representative hospitals in 23 states) that had performed cardiac catheterization from 1995--2001 with a primary diagnosis of AMI. Adjusted procedure rates and prevalence ratios (PR) were computed to compare catheterization rates by race and ethnicity.

Measurements And Main Results: Catheterization rates were higher for whites than blacks for all years examined; rates among Hispanics increased during this period and approached the rate among whites.

Background: Heart failure (HF) is a common clinical syndrome resulting in high morbidity and mortality. We examined the spectrum of ventricular dysfunction, and investigated the predictors of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor, beta-blocker, and spironolactone prescription in 1613 managed care patients with HF.

Methods And Results: The diagnosis of HF was made by a HF discharge diagnosis or at least 3 physician encounters with a HF diagnosis during 2000.

Transglutaminases (TGs) are calcium-dependent enzymes that catalyze the transamidation of glutamine residues to form intermolecular isopeptide bonds. Nine distinct TGs have been identified in mammals, and three of them (types 2, 3, and 5) are regulated by GTP/ATP and are able to hydrolyze GTP, working as bifunctional enzymes. We have isolated a cDNA clone encoding a TG from a cDNA library prepared from the blastula stage of sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus (PlTG).

Crystallogenesis, usually based on the vapor diffusion method, is currently considered one of the most difficult steps in macromolecular X-ray crystallography. Due to the increasing number of crystallization assays performed by protein crystallographers, several automated analysis methods are under development. Most of these methods are based on microscope images and shape recognition.

Background: Sex disparities in procedure use for acute myocardial infarction (AMI) have been well documented in selected populations in the 1980s and early 1990s. As little is known about more recent trends in sex disparities in the general population, we analyzed more recent rates of catheterization, angioplasty, and coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) performed before discharge for acute myocardial infarction.

Methods: Data from representative civilian hospitals in 33 US states in the Nationwide Inpatient Sample from 1995 to 2001 were used to identify men and women discharged with a primary diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction.

The impact of estrogens on the cardiovascular system and their ability to regulate platelet function are matters of controversy. The recent finding that estrogen receptors are expressed in human platelets renders these cells an excellent model for studying the nongenomic effects of these hormones. In this work, we investigated 17beta-estradiol-dependent signaling in platelets from adult healthy men.

Purpose: To determine whether diabetes remains an important contributor to mortality among the elderly.

Methods: A 5% national sample of Medicare claims was utilized to create a retrospective cohort study. Participants were 148,562 persons with at least one hospitalization or two outpatient visits for diabetes in 1994, who were alive on January 1, 1995, were > or =65 years old, and were not in managed care in 1994; and 148,562 age, gender, and race matched controls without diabetes.

To determine if different therapies are used in different racial groups and by gender, data from the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey and the National Hospital Ambulatory Care Survey (national probability samples of outpatient visits) were used. All visits for hypertension in 1999 and 2000 were reviewed. Survey weights were applied to obtain national estimates.

Use of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors and beta-adrenergic receptor blockers in patients with heart failure (HF) remains low despite the results of clinical trials and evidence-based guidelines that support their use. The quality of HF care in managed Medicare and Medicaid programs in North Carolina participating in a HF quality improvement program was assessed. Managed care plans identified adult patients with 1 inpatient or 3 outpatient claims for HF during 2000.

Objective: The goal of this study was to determine heart failure prevalence and incidence rates, subsequent mortality, and risk factors for heart failure among older populations in Medicare with diabetes.

Research Design And Methods: We used a national 5% sample of Medicare claims from 1994 to 1999 to perform a population-based, nonconcurrent cohort study in 151,738 beneficiaries with diabetes who were age > or =65 years, not in managed care, and were alive on 1 January 1995. Prevalent heart failure was defined as a diagnosis of heart failure in 1994; incident heart failure was defined as a new diagnosis in 1995-1999 among those without prevalent heart failure.

Objective: Controversy exists regarding the relation between diabetes and nonischemic idiopathic cardiomyopathy (ICM), and only limited data on the incidence of ICM in adults with diabetes are available. Therefore, we used the 1995 Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS) to determine discharge rates and test the hypothesis that diabetes is independently associated with ICM.

Research Design And Methods: The 1995 NIS includes demographic and diagnostic data on all discharges from >900 representative hospitals in 19 states.

Adhesion of blood platelets to fibrillar collagens plays a crucial role in haemostasis. Collagen type II is a homotrimeric member of the fibrillar collagen family, whose ability to interact with platelets has been poorly investigated. In this work, we analysed platelet adhesion to the whole collagen type II molecule, as well as to its CNBr peptides.

Fibrinogen binding to integrin alphaIIbbeta3 mediates platelet aggregation and requires agonist-induced "inside-out" signals that increase alphaIIbbeta3 affinity. Agonist regulation of alphaIIbbeta3 also takes place in megakaryocytes, the bone marrow cells from which platelets are derived. To facilitate mechanistic studies of inside-out signaling, we describe here the generation of megakaryocytes in quantity from murine embryonic stem (ES) cells.

Decorin is a small leucine-rich proteoglycan able to interact with several molecules of the subendothelial matrix, such as collagen and fibronectin. In this work, we investigated the ability of purified decorin to support adhesion of human platelets. We found that gel-filtered platelets were actually able to interact with immobilized decorin.

The affinity of integrin alpha(IIb)beta(3) for fibrinogen is controlled by inside-out signals that are triggered by agonists like thrombin. Agonist treatment of platelets also activates Rap1b, a small GTPase known to promote integrin-dependent adhesion of other cells. Therefore, we investigated the role of Rap1b in alpha(IIb)beta(3) function by viral transduction of GFP-Rap1 chimeras into murine megakaryocytes, which exhibit inside-out signaling similar to platelets.

Objective: Although the number of elders with diabetes has increased dramatically, there are few data on rates of mortality and serious complications in older populations with diabetes. To determine such rates, we conducted a population-based, nonconcurrent cohort study using claims data from the 1994-1996 Medicare 5% Standard Analytical File.

Research Design And Methods: Codes from the ICD-9 were used to identify diabetes and the following complications: amputation, lower extremity infection, gangrene, blindness, acute myocardial infarction, ischemic heart disease, stroke, and metabolic disorders.
