Background: Adherence to optimal practices in the preparation and issuance of pediatric blood components can significantly influence patient care outcomes. This study aims to examine the blood banking procedures across prominent Italian children's hospitals, with the goal of identifying both consistent and potentially divergent standards within this field.

Materials And Methods: A survey was conducted among the blood banks affiliated with the Italian Association of Pediatric Hospitals.

Background: In the literature, there are no studies about the transfusion threshold for neonates with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) undergoing therapeutic hypothermia (TH). In order to facilitate accurate interpretation of coagulation results in these neonates, we aimed to generate specific reference intervals in this specific population.

Methods: This retrospective study included all HIE neonates admitted from 2014 to 2022 to undergo TH.

Background: Features associated with a safe surgical resection of cerebral cavernous malformations (CMs) are still not clear and what is needed to achieve this target has not been defined yet.

Methods: Clinical presentation, radiological features and anatomical locations were assessed for patients operated on from January 2008 to January 2018 for supratentorial and cerebellar cavernomas. Supratentorial CMs were divided into 3 subgroups (non-critical vs.

Background: The efficacy of early treatment with convalescent plasma in patients with COVID-19 is debated. Nothing is known about the potential effect of other plasma components other than anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies.

Methods: To determine whether convalescent or standard plasma would improve outcomes for adults in early phase of Covid19 respiratory impairment we designed this randomized, three-arms, clinical trial (PLACO COVID) blinded on interventional arms that was conducted from June 2020 to August 2021.

α-Carboxyketose synthases, including 3-deoxy-d-heptulosonate 7-phosphate synthase (DAHPS), are long-standing targets for inhibition. They are challenging targets to create tight-binding inhibitors against, and inhibitors often display half-of-sites binding and partial inhibition. Half-of-sites inhibition demonstrates the existence of inter-subunit communication in DAHPS.

3-Deoxy-d-heptulosonate-7-phosphate (DAHP) synthase catalyzes the first step in the shikimate biosynthetic pathway and is an antimicrobial target. We used an inhibitor-in-pieces approach, based on the previously reported inhibitor DAHP oxime, to screen inhibitor fragments in the presence and absence of glycerol 3-phosphate to occupy the distal end of the active site. This led to DAHP hydrazone, the most potent inhibitor to date, = 10 ± 1 nM.

Background: In Italy, as in many developed countries, a decline in blood component (BC) consumption, especially red blood cells (RBC), has been described, but not studied at a national level. We, therefore, designed a nationwide survey to determine the main features of BC recipients and obtain a picture of the clinical use of BC for the first time in Italy, in order to understand BC demands better and identify specific fields in which to apply Patient Blood Management (PBM).

Material And Methods: A nationwide survey of all Italian Blood Establishments working as Hospital Blood Banks (HBB) was performed.

Objective: Our objective is to describe self-reported health status, prevalence of diabetes and obesity and their associations in participants from the First Nations Food, Nutrition and Environment Study (FNFNES) in order to identify possible correlates of health in First Nations adults.

Methods: FNFNES is a participatory study with First Nations Peoples living on reserve lands south of the 60 parallel. Health and diabetes were self-reported, and prevalence of obesity was evaluated.

Objective: To describe the prevalence of food insecurity in First Nations households across Canada while identifying barriers and enablers to traditional food (TF) consumption.

Methods: The First Nations Food, Nutrition and Environment Study is a cross-Canada participatory study of on-reserve First Nations from 2008 to 2018. The Household Food Security Survey Module was used to capture income-related challenges experienced by First Nations households.

Objective: Assess the diet quality of First Nations adults in Canada using percentage energy from traditional foods (TF) and ultra-processed products (UPP), food portions from the 2007 Eating Well with Canada's Food Guide - First Nations, Inuit and Métis (EWCFG-FNIM) and a Healthy Eating Index (HEI).

Methods: Data collection for this participatory research occurred in 92 First Nations reserves across Canada from 2008 to 2016. Percent daily energy intakes were estimated from 24-hour recalls for TF and NOVA food categories.

Objectives: To identify food sources of nutrients in First Nations adults in Canada and to establish whether these populations are meeting their nutrient requirements and whether traditional foods (TF) contribute to better nutrient intake.

Methods: The First Nations Food, Nutrition and Environment Study is a cross-Canada participatory study of First Nations adults living south of the 60 parallel. Twenty-four-hour recalls were conducted in 92 First Nations communities from 2008 to 2016.

Objective: To describe the traditional food (TF) systems of First Nations in Canada, including intake, barriers and promoters.

Methods: The First Nations Food, Nutrition and Environment Study is a cross-Canada participatory study of First Nations adults below the 60 parallel that obtained data for communities excluded from other national studies. A food frequency questionnaire was used to establish frequency of TF intake (number of days in a year) to allow comparisons across ecozones/regions in Canada.

Non-government organizations (NGOs) spend substantial time and resources collecting baseline data in order to plan and implement health interventions with marginalized populations. Typically interviews with households, often mothers, take over an hour, placing a burden on the respondents. Meanwhile, estimates of numerous health and social indicators in many countries already exist in publicly available datasets, such as the Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) and the Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys (MICS), and it is worth considering whether these could serve as estimates of baseline conditions.

Double traumatic non-contiguous lesions of the subaxial cervical region are a rare event mostly caused by multiple, simultaneous or rapidly consecutive high-energy-impact traumas. The modality of treatment chosen for these lesions must be related to local lower cervical spine biomechanics. We present the case of a 59 year-old patient who suffered a subaxial cervical spine double fracture-dislocation following a complex-dynamic trauma.

Article Synopsis
  • Light chain amyloidosis is a condition where proteins called light chains build up in organs, causing them to not work well.
  • Chemo treatment helps reduce the production of these harmful light chains, but some patients still have problems even if tests say they're improving.
  • A study found that more than half of patients still had tiny amounts of these abnormal proteins, and this was linked to ongoing health issues, suggesting that checking for these proteins is important for better treatment plans.
