There are several indications for resecting the bony chin, such as squamous cell carcinoma, sarcoma, or benign tumors of the jaw such as ameloblastoma. Several techniques for reconstruction of the bony chin, such as the use of metal plates and also revascularized free bone grafts of the iliac crest, fibula, or scapula, are common. In the case of poor vascular supply, however, alternative techniques may be necessary.

Patients And Methods: This retrospective study included 10 patients with a mean observation period of 31 months (range, 3 to 76 months). A total of 40 implants were placed.
The experiences of seven patients with squamous cell carcinomas of the oral cavity who underwent reconstruction with a bioengineered human dermal replacement (Dermagraft) are examined. The human dermal replacement consists of fibroblasts seeded onto a three-dimensional polymer scaffold to create a living dermal structure. In this setting, the fibroblasts secrete a mixture of growth factors and matrix proteins in physiological concentration that is essential for wound healing and epithelization.
