Thyroid storm (TS) occurs in 10% of thyrotoxicosis patients and 1% of TS patients experience cardiogenic shock (CS), which is associated with poor prognosis. This is a single institution, retrospective study in which 56 patients with TS were evaluated. BMI (p = 0.

Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is an acquired form of thrombocytopenia potentially complicated by hemorrhage due to autoantibodies reactive with platelets and megakaryocytes. Diagnosis of ITP requires exclusion of other known causes of thrombocytopenia.

Proactive, real-time, and retrospective risk-reduction strategies should be implemented in hospitals, but patient safety leaders should also be cognizant of the risks associated with thousands of products that enter the hospital through the supply chain. A growing number of recalls and alerts related to these products are received by health care facilities each year, through a recall process that is fraught with challenges.

We have previously shown that 5 mm axial T1-weighted images following Gd-diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid (DTPA) administration were sufficient as a screening examination of the internal auditory canal (IAC) and cerebellopontine angle cistern in 80% of cases with sensorineural hearing loss. In the remaining 20% of cases 3 mm slices were necessary for confirmation of the diagnosis. To reduce the number of cases requiring the additional examination, we have modified our protocol to include a coronal "scout" T1-weighted sequence followed by 5 mm axial sections angled through the IACs.

CT and MR imaging are capable of evaluating structural changes seen in these abnormalities. Positron emission tomography and single-photon emission CT studies, by evaluating metabolic changes, may demonstrate abnormalities before those seen on CT or MR imaging.

Up to 96 DNA templates contained in a microtiter plate can be processed for either radioactive or fluorescence-based sequence analysis in a three-hour period. The quality of the resultant data is comparable to that obtained manually.

The patient presented with pain in the anterior wall of the chest, and tenderness over the ribs, thoracic spine, and right shoulder. A radionuclide bone scan showed increased uptake along the costochondral junctions, ribs, and shoulders, with the diffuse uptake in the costochondral junction being typical for costochondritis.

A GCRG of the femur in a 57-year-old man was described. He had undergone local radiotherapy and systemic chemotherapy for T-cell lymphoma of the jaw and scalp diagnosed 4 weeks previously. Since radiologically the lesion suggested an aggressive process, malignant lymphoma was the most probable preoperative diagnosis.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFTuberculous abscess of the pancreas is a rare complication of disseminated tuberculosis. The computed tomographic appearance of a tuberculous pancreatic abscess in a patient with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) is described. One should consider this diagnosis whenever a patient with AIDS has diffuse abdominal lymphadenopathy.

A patient undergoing treatment for abdominal lymphoma presented with a superior vena cava (SVC) syndrome. The presence of a wide mediastinum and "nodular" mediastinal densities on CT presented a diagnostic problem, necessitating thoracotomy. The thoracotomy was negative for tumor or infection.

Previous work had demonstrated that the BALB/c endogenous ecotropic provirus was infectious but unable to induce XC cell syncytia formation, and that induced (BALB/c X B6) hybrid cells expressed 10- to 50-fold more XC syncytia than induced parental cells. Two independently isolated DNA clones of the B6 endogenous ecotropic provirus were noninfectious following transfection into cells, and cell lines that expressed this viral genome produced noninfectious MuLV.

In order to determine what training factors are associated with running-related injuries, as well as what percentage of injured runners seeks professional medical attention, a random sample of entrants to a 10 kilometer race was asked to complete a questionnaire. There were 451 respondents, 355 men and 96 women, with a nonresponse rate of 12.

One of these elements, V1, encodes virtually all of the VH regions in BALB/c antiphosphorylcholine antibodies, while another element, V3, is a pseudogene and cannot be transcribed or translated. We have examined the structural features of this VH gene family in other mouse strains and, in particular, have cloned and sequenced the alleles of these gene segments present in B10.

The antibodies raised were IgM (kappa) and their activities were assayed by complement-dependent damage to liposomes lacking lipid A but containing the rest of original immunizing mixture of lipids. Three of the four antibodies selected cross-reacted with liposomes containing phosphatidylinositol instead of phosphatidylinositol phosphate; and two of the antibodies cross-reacted with liposomes containing phosphatidylinositol diphosphate.

Two patients with a rare, massive type of discoid medial meniscus have been described. Both presented with a locked knee due to athletic trauma in the third and fifth decade of life, respectively. Clinically, discoid meniscus has only nonspecific signs.

Seven had ophthalmic lesions (three due to adenovirus Type 8, four to herpes simplex virus, and one to herpes zoster) and were treated with HFIF. In the four patients with herpes simplex keratitis, HFIF was given in addition to standard therapy or together with other antiviral agents.

This effect could be seen in the absence of any significant change in general activity, indicating that it was not due to sedation or general motor debilitation. The antinociceptive effect of LVP does not appear to be mediated by endogenous opiates or other pituitary hormones, as evidenced by: 1) the lack of antagonism by the opiate receptor blocker naloxone, 2) the lack of cross-tolerance with morphine, and 3) its persistence after hypophysectomy.

A comparison of this sequence with those of the C gamma 2 and C gamma 4 genes reveals that these three human C gamma genes share considerable homology in both coding and noncoding regions. The nucleotide sequence differences indicate that these genes diverged from one another approximately 608 million years ago.

One hundred consecutive patients who had trauma to the knee were examined by sonography and double-contrast arthrography to evaluate the presence or absence of popliteal cyst. In 58 cases both tests were negative, while in 15 both were positive. Each of those 15 patients had pain and/or a palpable mass behind the knee.
