Background: Acute lung rejection is a risk factor for chronic rejection, which jeopardizes long-term recipient survival. Presently, acute rejection is diagnosed with the use of transbronchial lung biopsies, which are invasive, expensive, and subject to sampling error. We seek to improve acute rejection diagnostics by identifying genes whose expression in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) cells best classifies acute rejection versus no rejection.

Gene expression microarrays can estimate the prevalence of mRNA for thousands of genes in a small sample of cells or tissue. Organ transplant researchers are increasingly using microarrays to identify specific patterns of gene expression that predict and characterize acute and chronic rejection, and to improve our understanding of the mechanisms underlying organ allograft dysfunction. We used microarrays to assess gene expression in bronchoalveolar lavage cell samples from lung transplant recipients with and without acute rejection on simultaneous lung biopsies.

We determined the meiotic origin and the stage of non-disjunction of the extra X chromosomes in two sisters with 47,XXX chromosomal complements. Segregation of the X chromosomes in all family members was analyzed using X-linked short tandem repeat polymorphic (STRP) markers. Densitometric analysis of two STRP markers confirmed that both sisters had three copies of the X chromosome and the extra X chromosomes were maternally derived.

Involvement of the central nervous system (CNS) by multiple myeloma, as defined by the detection of malignant plasma cells in the cerebrospinal fluid in the presence of suggestive symptoms, is considered extremely rare. We report on the characteristics of 18 such patients diagnosed and treated at the University of Arkansas over the last 10 years for an overall incidence of approximately 1%. Their evaluation revealed association of CNS involvement with unfavourable cytogenetic abnormalities (especially translocations and deletion of the chromosome 13), high tumour mass, plasmablastic morphology, additional extramedullary myeloma manifestations and circulating plasma cells.

Retrotransposons are mobile genetic elements. They can transpose via the reverse transcription of mRNA into double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) followed by the insertion of this dsDNA into new sites within the host genome. The unintegrated, linear, dsDNA form of retrotransposons is usually very rare.

This paper describes the use of the terephthalate dosimeter to measure the threshold and extent of cavitation arising from medical ultrasound sources at high frequencies. Significant hydroxyl radical production was noted from a physiotherapy source and low level activity was also detected when using a pulsed, diagnostic type transducer system. The effect of sound intensity and the type of field is described.

This study compared the effectiveness of a rap video with a traditional video in providing nutrition information. Sixty pregnant African-American females (ages 14 through 18) were randomly assigned to view either a rap video or a traditional video about good nutrition. The data revealed no significant difference in scores between the two versions; both videos produced significant learning; and 17 and 18 year olds scored higher than 15 and 16 year olds.

Nineteen linkage groups containing a total of 52 markers have been identified in the sheep genome after typing large paternal half-sib families. The linkage groups range in size from 2 markers showing no recombination to a group containing 6 markers covering approximately 30 cM of the sheep genome. Thirteen of the groups have been assigned to a sheep chromosome.

Three pigeons, previously trained to a high level of accuracy on matching-to-sample procedures, were exposed to various schedules of ratio reinforcement for correct matches. Overall accuracy was lower on fixed ratio than on regular reinforcement. There was a high incidence of errors immediately after reinforcement on fixed ratio schedules with accuracy increasing as the ratio progressed.
