Ferrocene (Fc)-based disulfide molecules of various lengths with amino acid scaffolds and alkane or oligo(phenylene-ethynylene) (OPE) bridges are used in a mixed SAM with a di-(ethylene oxide) terminal mercaptoundecanol diluent (PEG). The relative height of the Fc redox reporter in the SAM is compared to determine if there are protective effects like antifouling and specific detection. The HaloTag-binding motif is used as a proof-of-concept to investigate the electrochemical response to the HaloTag protein due to its known covalent and fast linkage.

This paper describes the synthesis, characterization, and functional activity of 26 MegaMolecule-based bispecific antibody mimics for T-cell redirection toward HER2+ cancer cells. The work reports functional bispecific MegaMolecules that bind both receptor targets, and recruit and activate T-cells resulting in lysis of the target tumor cells. Changing the orientation of linkage between Fabs against either HER2 or CD3ε results in an approximately 150-fold range in potency.

Background: ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence technology, has the potential to be a useful patient aid, though the accuracy and appropriateness of its responses and recommendations on common hand surgical pathologies and procedures must be understood. Comparing the sources referenced and characteristics of responses from ChatGPT and an established search engine (Google) on carpal tunnel surgery will allow for an understanding of the utility of ChatGPT for patient education.

Among nursing home outbreaks of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) with ≥3 breakthrough infections when the predominant severe acute respiratory coronavirus virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) variant circulating was the SARS-CoV-2 δ (delta) variant, fully vaccinated residents were 28% less likely to be infected than were unvaccinated residents. Once infected, they had approximately half the risk for all-cause hospitalization and all-cause death compared with unvaccinated infected residents.

Raman spectroscopic-based biosensing strategies are often complicated by low signal and the presence of multiple chemical species. While surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) nanostructured platforms are able to deliver high quality signals by focusing the electromagnetic field into a tight plasmonic hot-spot, it is not a generally applicable strategy as it often depends on the specific adsorption of the analyte of interest onto the SERS platform. Antibiotic bone cement (ABC) is an effective tool for the prophylaxis and treatment of osteomyelitis due to the controlled, sustained release of local antibiotics. ABC has been proven to be effective in the orthopedic fields of arthroplasty and extremity trauma, but the adoption of ABC in spine surgery is limited. The characteristics of ABC make it an optimal solution for treating vertebral osteomyelitis (VO), a serious complication following spine surgery, typically caused by bacterial and sometimes fungal and parasitic pathogens.

Nondestructive cell membrane permeabilization systems enable the intracellular delivery of exogenous biomolecules for cell engineering tasks as well as the temporal sampling of cytosolic contents from live cells for the analysis of dynamic processes. Here, we report a format live-cell analysis device (LCAD) that can perform localized-electroporation induced membrane permeabilization, for cellular delivery or sampling, and directly interfaces with surface-based biosensors for analyzing the extracted contents. We demonstrate the capabilities of the LCAD via an automated high-throughput workflow for multimodal analysis of live-cell dynamics, consisting of quantitative measurements of enzyme activity using self-assembled monolayers for MALDI mass spectrometry (SAMDI) and deep-learning enhanced imaging and analysis.

Introduction: Bacterial infection is a common etiology for pseudarthrosis after transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion, although it is often difficult to identify because of a delayed presentation and normal laboratory values. This study presents the effectiveness of a combined silver carboxylate (AgCar) and chlorohexidine gluconate (AgCar:CHG) chemistry assessed against two commonly encountered nosocomial pathogens, Methicillin-resistant (MRSA) and , within the context of surgical antisepsis and wound care. Through an Institutional Review Board- and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)-approved protocol, AgCar:CHG was applied to live Yucatan porcine skin and visualized by fast red and green staining to assess level of skin penetration. Laboratory batch experiments were performed to assess the reduction of trichloroethene (TCE) and oxygen via natural ferrous minerals. TCE reduction under anoxic conditions was measured via the generation of reduced gases, while oxygen reduction via the generation of hydroxyl radicals was measured as a surrogate for potential TCE oxidation. Results showed that TCE reduction under anoxic conditions was observed for ankerite, siderite, and illite, but not for biotite; acetylene was the primary identified dechlorination product.
