Partnering with Students to Develop a Capstone for a Graduate Health Informatics Program.

Objective:  This study aimed to assess the desirability, feasibility, and sustainability of integrating a project-based capstone course with the course-based curriculum of an interdisciplinary MSc Health Informatics program guided by a student-partnered steering committee and student-centered approach.

Methods:  We conducted an online cross-sectional survey ( = 87) and three semistructured focus groups ( = 18) of health informatics students and alumni. Survey data were analyzed descriptively.

Purpose Of Review: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death globally and is closely associated with obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). This review examines the interplay between obesity, T2DM, and CVD, highlighting the increasing prevalence and economic burden of these conditions.

Recent Findings: Pharmacologic therapies, particularly glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists, show promise in substantial weight loss and subsequent reduction of adverse cardiovascular events in obese individuals with and without diabetes.

The Development of a Thick-Lens Post-Myopic Laser Vision Correction Intraocular Lens Calculation Formula.

Purpose: To describe the development of the post-myopic laser vision correction (LVC) version of the PEARL-DGS intraocular lens (IOL) calculation formula and to evaluate its outcomes on an independent test set.

Design: Retrospective, single-center case series.

Methods: A modified lens position prediction algorithm was designed along with methods to predict the posterior corneal curvature radius and correct the corneal power measurement error.

Objectives: The authors assessed the safety and effectiveness of a virtual care team guided strategy on GDMT optimization in hospitalized patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF).

Methods: In a multicenter implementation trial, we allocated 252 hospital encounters in patients with left ventricular ejection fraction ≤40% to a virtual care team guided strategy (107 encounters among 83 patients) or usual care (145 encounters among 115 patients) across 3 centers in an integrated health system.

Background: Diagnosing heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) can be difficult, as they are frequently exposed to heparin and have multiple etiologies for thrombocytopenia.

Objective: To correlate 4T scores, IgG heparin-platelet factor 4 (PF4-heparin) ELISA results, and serotonin release assay (SRA) results in patients with ESRD.

Methods: We performed a retrospective review of patients with ESRD (creatinine clearance < 15 mL/min or on renal replacement therapy [RRT]) who underwent PF4-heparin ELISA testing from October 2015 to September 2019.

Background: In many countries, sex work is criminalized, driving sex work underground and leaving sex workers vulnerable to a number of occupational health and safety risks, including violence, assault, and robbery. Delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI) following aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage continues to be associated with high levels of morbidity and mortality. This complication had long been thought to occur secondary to severe cerebral vasospasm, but expert opinion now favors a multifactorial etiology, opening the possibility of new therapies. To date, no definitive treatment option for DCI has been recommended as standard of care, highlighting a need for further research into potential therapies.

Left ventricular systolic dysfunction is the hallmark pathology in heart failure with reduced ejection fraction. Increasing left ventricular contractility with beta-adrenergic receptor agonists, phosphodiesterase-3 inhibitors, or levosimendan has failed to improve clinical outcomes and, in some situations, increased the risk of sudden cardiac death. Green tea has been reported as potential dietary protection against numerous cancers and has been shown to have activity in bladder tumor inhibition in different animal models. The goal of this study was to examine the effects of (-)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG-the major phytochemical in green tea) on growth inhibition and behavior of human bladder carcinoma cells and to identify the altered signaling pathway(s) underlying the response to EGCG exposure. Interferon-alpha resistance in renal carcinoma cells is associated with defective induction of signal transducer and activator of transcription 1 which can be restored by a supernatant of phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate stimulated peripheral blood mononuclear cells.

Therapy of selected human malignancies with interferon-alpha is widely accepted but often complicated by the emergence of interferon-alpha resistance. Interferon is a pleiotropic cytokine with antiproliferative, antitumour, antiviral and immunmodulatory effect; it signals through the Jak-STAT signal transduction pathway where signal transducer and activator of transcription 1 plays an important role. Here we report both, a lack of signal transducer and activator of transcription induction in interferon-alpha resistant renal cell carcinoma cells and signal transducer and activator of transcription 1 reinduction of phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate-stimulated peripheral blood mononuclear cells supernatant.

Effects of macrophage-CSF on pulmonary-macrophage repopulation after bone marrow transplantation.

Pulmonary infections are important causes of morbidity and mortality in immunosuppressed patients after transplantation. After experimental irradiation and syngeneic bone marrow transplantation in mice, macrophages show reduced repopulation in the lung compared with that in other tissues.
