Predicting bacteriophage infection of specific bacterial strains promises advancements in phage therapy and microbial ecology. Whether the dynamics of well-established phage-host model systems generalize to the wide diversity of microbes is currently unknown. Here we show that we could accurately predict the outcomes of phage-bacteria interactions at the strain level in natural isolates from the genus Escherichia using only genomic data (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) of 86%).

Background: COPD inhaler regimens should be appropriate for the patient's peak inspiratory flow (PIF) and should ideally consist of single or similar device(s).

Research Questions: In a subspecialized COPD clinic: (1) What is the prevalence of patients with suboptimal PIF and with inappropriate device(s) for measured PIF? (2) Are there patient-related risk factors associated with suboptimal PIF? (3) What is the prevalence of patients with non-single inhaler therapy (SIT)/nonsimilar devices? (4) Does point-of-care PIF affect clinical decision-making?

Study Design And Methods: In this single-center real-world observational study, PIF was measured systematically at every outpatient visit in a subspecialized COPD clinic, and point-of-care results were provided to the clinician. Coprimary outcomes were the prevalence of outpatients with suboptimal PIF and with inappropriate devices for measured PIF.

The response of materials under dynamic compression involves a complex interplay of various deformation mechanisms aimed at relieving shear stresses, yielding a remarkable diversity in material behavior. In this Letter, we utilize femtosecond x-ray diffraction coupled with nanosecond laser compression to reveal an intricate competition between multiple shear-relieving mechanisms within an elemental metal. Our observations in shocked-compressed single-crystal Zr indicate a disorder-mediated shear relaxation at lower pressures.

Semi-dry desulfurization is an efficient means of SO removal from the effluent gases from electrolysis cells in aluminum smelters. These gases are at low temperature and contain low concentrations of SO, as opposed to thermal power plants. We present the development of an experimental platform that can collect four frames of x-ray diffraction data along a single line of sight during laser-driven, dynamic-compression experiments at the National Ignition Facility. The platform is comprised of a diagnostic imager built around ultrafast sensors with a 2-ns integration time, a custom target assembly that serves also to shield the imager, and a 10-ns duration, quasi-monochromatic x-ray source produced by laser-generated plasma. We demonstrate the performance with diffraction data for Pb ramp compressed to 150 GPa and illuminated by a Ge x-ray source that produces ∼7 × 1011, 10.

Dwell fatigue, the reduction in fatigue life experienced by titanium alloys due to holds at stresses as low as 60% of yield, has been implicated in several uncontained jet engine failures. Dislocation slip has long been observed to be an intermittent, scale-bridging phenomenon, similar to that seen in earthquakes but at the nanoscale, leading to the speculation that large stress bursts might promote the initial opening of a crack. Here we observe such stress bursts at the scale of individual grains in situ, using high energy X-ray diffraction microscopy in Ti-7Al-O alloys.

Phosphorus (P) removal from the domestic wastewater is required to counter the eutrophication in receiving water bodies and is mandated by the regulatory frameworks in several countries with discharge limits within 1-2mgPL. Operating at higher sludge retention time (SRT) and higher biomass concentration than the conventional activated sludge process (CASP), membrane bioreactors (MBRs) are able to remove 70-98% phosphorus without addition of coagulant. In full-scale facilities, enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) is assisted by the addition of metal coagulant to ensure >95% P-removal.
