A molecular Kuhn-scale model is presented for the stress relaxation dynamics of entangled polymer networks. The governing equation of the model is given by the general form of the linearized Langevin equation. Based on the fluctuation-dissipation theorem, the stress relaxation modulus is derived using the normal mode representation.

Long-standing experimental data on the elastic modulus of end-linked poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) networks are employed to corroborate the validity of the Miller-Macosko theory (MMT). The validity of MMT is also confirmed by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations that mimic the experimentally realized networks. It becomes apparent that for a network formed from bulk, where the fractions of the loops are small, it is sufficient to account for the topological details of a reference tree-like network, i.

Background: Little is known about communication between patients, families, and healthcare providers regarding ethical concerns that patients and families experience in the course of illness and medical care. To address this gap in the literature, we surveyed patients and family members to learn about their ethical concerns and the extent to which they discussed them with their healthcare providers.

Methods: We surveyed adult, English-speaking patients and family members receiving inpatient care in five hospitals in the Washington DC-Baltimore metropolitan area from July 2017 to March 2020.

From a preventative perspective, leg axis and core stabilization capacities are important for soccer players and alpine skiers; however, due to different sport-specific demands, the role of laterality clearly differs and may result in functional long-term adaptations. The aims of this study are 1) to determine whether there are differences in leg axis and core stability between youth soccer players and alpine skiers and 2) between dominant and non-dominant sides, and 3) to explore the outcomes of applying common sport-specific asymmetry thresholds to these two distinct cohorts. Twenty-one highly trained/national-level soccer players (16.

The distribution of facet types affects the functionality of the surfaces of polycrystalline films. However, we are not aware of a previously published convenient method to determine their distribution. This work describes and demonstrates a process to determine and map the Miller indexes (hkl) of crystal facets exposed at the surfaces of polycrystalline films.

Background: Physician-assisted death (PAD) for people with nonterminal illnesses (PAD-NT) is a controversial practice legal in some countries and increasingly debated in others, including the United States. A major concern about legalization of PAD-NT is that a lack of resources may drive some with mental illnesses or physical disabilities to seek PAD.

Objective: To assess US public opinion on PAD-NT under conditions of resource limitation.

Purpose: Hamstring muscle architecture may be associated with sprint performance and the risk of sustaining a muscle injury, both of which increase during puberty. In this study, we investigated the m. biceps femoris long head (BFlh) cross-sectional area (ACSA), fascicle length (FL) and pennation angle (PA), and sprint performance as well as their relationship in under 13 to 15 youth soccer players.

The novel Rfm3 locus causing undesired fertility restoration in the msm1 cytoplasm of winter barley is located on the short arm of chromosome 6H. Undesired fertility restoration of cytoplasmic male sterile (CMS) mother lines in absence of the functional Rfm1 restorer gene is a significant problem for hybrid breeding in winter barley. Here, we describe that a novel restorer locus on the short arm of chromosome 6H, designated Rfm3, is closely linked to two mitochondrial transcription termination factor family (mTERF) protein coding genes.

Background: The origins of life on the Earth required chemical entities to interact with their environments in ways that could respond to natural selection. The concept of interpretation, where biotic entities use signs in their environment as proxy for the existence of other items of selective value in their environment, has been proposed on theoretical grounds to be relevant to the origins and early evolution of life. However this concept has not been demonstrated empirically.

In the hippocampus, synaptic proteins, as studied so far, have been shown to be upregulated by 17β-estradiol, while inhibition of local estradiol synthesis consistently downregulates them. As an exception to this rule, we have previously shown that synaptopodin, an actin-associated postsynaptic protein, is downregulated in response to estradiol in dissociated cultured hippocampal neurons. In this study, we show, unexpectedly, that synaptopodin is downregulated in the hippocampus of aromatase knock-out mice and that inhibition of neuronal estradiol synthesis using the aromatase inhibitor letrozole also downregulates synaptopodin in these cultures.

Background: Deoxyhypusine synthase (DHS) catalyzes the first step in hypusine biosynthesis of eukaryotic initiation factor 5A (eIF-5A) in Plasmodium falciparum. Target evaluation of parasitic DHS has recently been performed with CNI-1493, a novel selective pro-inflammatory cytokine inhibitor used in clinical phase II for the treatment of Crohn's disease. CNI-1493 prevented infected mice from experimental cerebral malaria by decreasing the levels in hypusinated eIF-5A and serum TNF, implicating a link between cytokine signaling and the hypusine pathway.

Recent developments in studies on the structure of surfaces based on ion beam triangulation are discussed. We will outline recent experimental progress in the application of this method, which is closely related to the detection of the number of emitted electrons per incident ion during scattering under surface channeling conditions. Key features are the pronounced change of electron emission for the projectile beam aligned along a low index crystallographic direction in the surface plane ('axial surface channeling') and the interpretation of data in terms of classical trajectory computer simulations.

The structure and magnetism of ultrathin Fe films epitaxially grown on a Cu(001) surface are investigated by grazing scattering of fast H and He atoms or ions. By making use of a new variant of ion beam triangulation based on the detection of the number of emitted electrons, we obtain direct information on the structure of the film surface. We observe for room temperature growth a dominant and defined fcc-like structure.

The magnetization reversal of ultrathin Co films on Cu(001) has been investigated by grazing ion scattering and magneto-optical Kerr effect. Differences in the behavior of surface and bulk magnetization are found and attributed to the reduced coordination and site symmetry at the surface. The reversal behavior of the surface magnetization depends on the chemical surface composition.

In order to identify the optimum particle size and breathing pattern for high peripheral deposition of inhaled drugs in patients with cystic fibrosis, regional deposition in these patients was studied systematically as a function of particle size, inhalation volume and flow rate. Regional deposition was assessed using the single-breath regional deposition technique in which the concentration profile of inhaled and exhaled non-radioactive, monodisperse test particles is analyzed. Using this technique particle deposition within the functional dead space volume and peripherally can be assessed.

We present a combined theoretical and experimental study of island nucleation and growth in the deposition of Co on Cu(001)-a prototype for understanding heteroepitaxial growth involving intermixing. Experimentally, ion scattering is employed. Using density-functional theory, we obtain energy barriers for the various elementary processes and incorporate these into a kinetic Monte Carlo program to simulate the heteroepitaxial growth.

Total target currents for grazing scattering of keV protons from a crystal target are used to investigate the structure of surfaces and ultrathin films. This current shows pronounced maxima whenever the azimuthal incidence angle coincides with close-packed rows of atoms in the surface and subsurface layers. The real-space method is applied to study monolayer and bilayer films of Mn and of CoMn epitaxially grown on a Cu(001) surface.

We report on the first spin-resolved energy spectra for the emission of electrons during grazing scattering of 150 keV multicharged nitrogen ions from a magnetized Fe(001) surface. A substantial spin polarization for KLL Auger electrons emitted in the final stage of the neutralization sequence during the interaction of multicharged ions with a metal surface is observed. We conclude from our data that the projectile L shell is dominantly populated by electrons from the conduction band of the target.
