Physiogenomic comparison of edema and BMI in patients receiving rosiglitazone or pioglitazone.

Background: The thiazolidinediones (TZDs) improve tissue sensitivity to insulin in patients with type II diabetes, resulting in reduced levels of fasting blood glucose and glycated hemoglobin. However, TZDs unpredictably demonstrate adverse effects of increased body weight, fluid retention, and edema. The balance of efficacy and safety of TZD varies widely from patient to patient.

Primary adrenal lymphoma presenting as adrenal insufficiency. A case report and review of literature.

Primary adrenal lymphoma (PAL) with adrenal insufficiency is a rare entity that has a unique presentation and prognosis when compared to other high-grade B-cell Non-Hodgkin's Lymphomas (NHL). Radiologic characteristics and image-guided biopsy are helpful in diagnosis. Current chemotherapy of choice is CHOP [Cyclophosphamide, Hydroxydaunomycin (doxorubicin), Oncovin (vincristine sulfate) and Prednisone].

Diabetes mellitus and pharmacological therapy.

Diabetes mellitus can be a devastating lifelong disease if not treated appropriately. The physician and the patient should be aware of both extremes involved with DM: hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia. Patient education and preventive care are perhaps more important in this disease than many others.

The cardiovascular health impact of an incentive worksite health promotion program.

Purpose: We examined the cardiovascular health profiles of benefit-eligible hospital employees who participated in an incentive screen program for 4 years. We also determined if cardiovascular health changes differed between participants (CHAP) who enrolled in structured follow-up risk reduction programs (CHAPplus) compared with those who chose less formal options (CHAPonly).

Methods: CHAP consisted of cardiovascular screens, results counseling, and encouragement to participate in education and behavioral support programs.

Skin testing and erythrocyte sedimentation rate in women undergoing breast biopsy.

The purpose of this study was to determine the utility of skin testing and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) as measures of immune function in a population undergoing stress. Eight women were tested one week prior to breast biopsy and six were retested at least four weeks later. All biopsies were negative for malignancy.

The Yale Affiliated Hospital Program in Internal Medicine. I. Organization, goals and plans.

In July, 1975, the Departments of Internal Medicine at the Yale University School of Medicine and eight community hospitals in southern and western Connecticut formed the Yale Affiliated Hospital Program (YAHP) in Internal Medicine. The YAHP provides a planned and focused program of continuing education for medical staff and housestaff at the affiliated hospitals. Six formats for the over 1,000 rounds, lectures, and conferences given annually are used.
