Recent years have shown that secondary ice production (SIP) is ubiquitous, affecting all clouds from polar to tropical regions. SIP is not described well in models and may explain biases in warm mixed-phase cloud ice content and structure. Through modeling constrained by in-situ observations and its synergy with radar we show that SIP in orographic clouds exert a profound impact on the vertical distribution of hydrometeors and precipitation, especially in seeder-feeder cloud configurations.

How animals respond to repeatedly applied stimuli, and how animals respond to mechanical stimuli in particular, are important questions in behavioral neuroscience. We study adaptation to repeated mechanical agitation using the larva. Vertical vibration stimuli elicit a discrete set of responses in crawling larvae: continuation, pause, turn, and reversal.

Snowfall information at the scale of individual particles is rare, difficult to gather, but fundamental for a better understanding of solid precipitation microphysics. In this article we present a dataset (with dedicated software) of in-situ measurements of snow particles in free fall. The dataset includes gray-scale (255 shades) images of snowflakes, co-located surface environmental measurements, a large number of geometrical and textural snowflake descriptors as well as the output of previously published retrieval algorithms.

When relativistic electrons are used to irradiate tissues, such as during FLASH pre-clinical irradiations, the electron beam energy is one of the critical parameters that determine the dose distribution. Moreover, during such irradiations, linear accelerators (linacs) usually operate with significant beam loading, where a small change in the accelerator output current can lead to beam energy reduction. Optimisation of the tuning of the accelerator's radio frequency system is often required.

What: The work-shop gathered almost 50 scientists from Europe and the United States to discuss the progress towards developing electromagnetic scattering databases for ice and snow particles in the microwave region, their applications, the physical approximations used to compute these scattering properties, and how remote sensing and in situ observations can be used to validate scattering datasets. One of the main priorities of the workshop was to foster communication between users and developers of scattering databases, and to define standards and conventions for scattering data structures and variables. Snowfall in Antarctica is a key term of the ice sheet mass budget that influences the sea level at global scale. Over the continental margins, persistent katabatic winds blow all year long and supply the lower troposphere with unsaturated air. An innovative approach to produce high-performance and halogen-free flame-retardant thin films at atmospheric pressure is reported. PDMS-based coatings with embedded dopant-rich polyphosphates are elaborated thanks to a straightforward approach, using an atmospheric pressure dielectric barrier discharge (AP-DBD). Deposition conditions have been tailored to elaborate various thin films that can match the fire performance requirements.

A convenient and efficient procedure is described for the sulfamoylation of alcohols using N-(tert-butoxycarbonyl)-N-[(triethylenediammonium)sulfonyl]azanide (1). The ambient temperature stable reagent 1 reacts with phenols as well as primary and secondary alcohols to give high to modest yields. The relative reaction rate of substrates was determined (primary > phenol > secondary ≫ tertiary).

Three highly homologous Esr genes are expressed specifically in the embryo surrounding region at the micropylar end of the maize endosperm. The proteins belong to a family of small hydrophilic proteins that share a conserved motive with Clv3, the ligand of the receptor-like kinase Clv1. In this study, co-localization of Esr proteins with their mRNAs in the embryo surrounding region was shown with polyclonal antibodies recognizing all three Esr proteins.

Five alpha spectrometry analysis algorithms were evaluated for their ability to resolve the 241Am and 243Am peak overlap present under typical low-level counting conditions. The major factors affecting the performance of the algorithms were identified using design-of-experiment combined with statistical analysis of the results. The study showed that the accuracy of the 241Am/243Am ratios calculated by the algorithms depends greatly on the degree of peak deformation and tailing.

A new baculovirus (BacTen) was constructed in order to generate p10 recombinant expression vectors at high frequency. This virus is an AcMNPV derivative, with the polyhedrin gene deleted and thus exhibiting p10 promoter as a single strong late promoter. The polyhedrin coding sequence was re-inserted subsequently under the control of the p10 promoter, in place of the p10 coding sequence.

Homelessness in the United States continues to be a major social problem directly affecting an estimated three million persons, of whom nearly 30 percent belong to families without permanent shelter. This paper reviews recent research concerning homeless families and the conditions in which they live and outlines the significant health and mental health problems that these families experience. This report expands the concept of the subperitoneal space (SS) as the potential conduit for direct spread of disease in the abdomen to include the female pelvis. The normal anatomy of the SS in the lower abdomen, the female pelvis, and its uninterrupted continuation between the abdomen and pelvis are demonstrated by several imaging modalities. Surgically proven cases of bidirectional spread of disease between the abdomen and female pelvis are reported.
