The purpose of this study was to analyze 2 different long-sprint training programs (TPs) of equal total work load, completed either with short recovery (SR) or long recovery (LR) between sets and to compare the effects of 6 long-sprint training sessions (TSs) conducted over a 2-week period on a 300-m performance. Fourteen trained subjects performed 3 pretraining maximal sprints (50-, 100-, and 300-m), were paired according to their 300-m performance, and randomly allocated to an LR or SR group, which performed 6 TSs consisting of sets of 150, 200, or 250 m. The recovery in the LR group was double that of the SR group.

One of the current reference methods, namely the Işcan method for estimating age at death, consists in the subjective observation of the sternal end of the fourth rib. In this study, we looked to identify the morphometric characteristics of the sternal end of the fourth rib that were most affected by aging by measuring them in an objective way. For this purpose, we collected measurements from the fourth rib tip of 414 French males and used mathematical algorithms derived from pattern recognition and signal processing to identify variables that reflect both geometric characteristics and serration patterns of the ribs.

Spliceosome mutations represent a new generation of acquired genetic alterations that affect both myeloid and lymphoid malignancies. A substantial proportion of patients with myelodysplastic syndromes (MDSs) or chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) harbor such mutations, which are often missense in type. Genotype-phenotype associations have been demonstrated for one of these mutations, SF3B1, with ring sideroblasts in MDS and 11q22 deletions in CLL.

Hepatic artery thrombosis (HAT), one of the most severe complications of pediatric orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT), often compromises graft and/or child survival. Of 590 OLT performed in 516 children over a 20-year period, 45 were complicated by early HAT, during the first 2 weeks after transplantation. Systematic Doppler ultrasonographic detection of HAT allowed successful surgical revascularization in 19 instances, resulting in a 20-year graft survival rate of 77% versus 24% of cases when revascularization was not attempted or failed.

A cohort of MDS patients was examined for mutations affecting 4 splice genes (SF3B1, SRSF2, ZRSR2, and U2AF35) and evaluated in the context of clinical and molecular markers. Splice gene mutations were detected in 95 of 221 patients. These mutations were mutually exclusive and less likely to occur in patients with complex cytogenetics or TP53 mutations.

The development of simple, primitive model descriptions for electrolyte solutions is usually carried out by fitting the system parameters to reproduce some experimental data. We propose an alternative method, that allows one to derive implicit solvent models of electrolyte solutions from all-atom descriptions. We obtain analytic expressions for the thermodynamic and structural properties of the ions, which are in good agreement with the underlying explicit solvent representation, provided that ion association is taken into account.
