Three free-roaming Victoria crowned pigeons (Goura victoria) housed in a completely enclosed tropical exhibit were found dead without antemortem signs of illness. The birds died within 9 days of each other. Gross necropsy revealed moderate pulmonary edema in all three birds.

Recently advances have been made in the treatment of acute leukemia in children, it is now possible to cure more than 70% of children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. With the introduction of more intensive chemotherapy regimens in patients at higher risk of relapse and the identification of cases that could be less intensely treated to diminish long-term toxicity, it could be possible to improve these excellent results. In contrast, pediatric acute myeloid leukaemia seems to be a more heterogeneous disease and its response to conventional chemotherapy is not as uniform.

Isolation from turkey breeder hens of a reassortant H1N2 influenza virus with swine, human, and avian lineage genes.

Type A influenza viruses can infect a wide range of birds and mammals, but influenza in a particular species is usually considered to be species specific. However, infection of turkeys with swine H1N1 viruses has been documented on several occasions. This report documents the isolation of an H1N2 influenza virus from a turkey breeder flock with a sudden drop in egg production.

Chronic effects of fumonisin B1 in broilers and turkeys fed dietary treatments to market age.

Floor pen studies were conducted with 270 broiler chicks and 144 turkey poults, all 1 wk old, to evaluate the chronic effects of fumonisin B1 (FB1). A Sarcocystis neurona-like parasite was associated with acute sarcocystosis in the brain of an ibis (Carphibis spinicollis). Numerous schizonts and merozoites were found extravascularly in encephalitic lesions. These schizonts reacted positively with anti-S.

Neuroendocrine cervical carcinoma: a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge.

The coexistence of a pancreatic papillary cystic tumor with hairy cell leukemia is reported. To the best of our knowledge this association has never been published. A 41-year-old man diagnosed with hairy cell leukemia developed a second malignancy that corresponded to a papillary cystic pancreatic tumor.

Blood plasma chemistries from wild mourning doves held in captivity.

Despite the extensive amount of research conducted on mourning doves (Zenaida macroura), no biochemical reference values exist for this species. Our objective, therefore, was to establish base line clinical chemistry reference values for mourning doves to assist with establishing clinical diagnoses. Wild mourning doves were captured 19 March 1996 to 8 August 1996, and 6 February 1998 to 12 May 1998; blood samples were collected from 382 mourning doves.

Polytetrafluoroethylene gas intoxication in broiler chickens.

A poultry research facility that housed 2400 Peterson x Hubbard cross broilers (48 pens of 50 chicks each) experienced 4% mortality within 24 hr of chick placement. Mortality started within 4 hr of placement, and within 72 hr, cumulative mortality had reached 52%. Mild dyspnea was the only clinical sign noted in some chicks prior to death.

Novel procedure for the identification of proteins by mass fingerprinting combining two-dimensional electrophoresis with fluorescent SYPRO red staining.

The fluorescent sensitive SYPRO Red dye was successfully employed to stain proteins in two-dimensional gels for protein identification by peptide mass fingerprinting. Proteins which are not chemically modified during the SYPRO Red staining process are well digested enzymatically in the gel and hence the resulting peptides can be efficiently eluted and analysed by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of designing the therapeutic management of each patient, morbidity, and mortality using laparoscopic staging in locally advanced cervical carcinoma and to establish the standard procedure for a "complete" staging.

Methods: From July 10, 1995, to June 30, 1998, 98 pts were included. Clinical staging was performed according to FIGO's criteria (22 Ib2; 38 IIb; 25 IIIb; and 6 IV).

Laparoscopically assisted Schauta operation: learning experience at the Gynecologic Oncology Unit, Buenos Aires University Hospital.
