Synthetic peptides from the liver stage antigen-1 (LSA-1) antigen sequence were used in HepG2 cell and erythrocyte binding assays to identify regions that could be involved in parasite invasion. LSA-1 protein peptides 20630 ((21)INGKIIKNSEKDEIIKSNLRY(40)), 20637 ((157)KEKLQGQQSDSEQERRAY(173)), 20638 ((174)KEKLQEQQSDLEQERLAY(190)) and 20639 (191KEKLQEQQSDLEQERRAY(207)) had high binding activity in HepG2 assays. Were located in immunogenic regions; peptide cell binding was saturable.

Recently advances have been made in the treatment of acute leukemia in children, it is now possible to cure more than 70% of children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. With the introduction of more intensive chemotherapy regimens in patients at higher risk of relapse and the identification of cases that could be less intensely treated to diminish long-term toxicity, it could be possible to improve these excellent results. In contrast, pediatric acute myeloid leukaemia seems to be a more heterogeneous disease and its response to conventional chemotherapy is not as uniform.

However, infection of turkeys with swine H1N1 viruses has been documented on several occasions. This report documents the isolation of an H1N2 influenza virus from a turkey breeder flock with a sudden drop in egg production.

A completely randomized design was used in both studies with six pen replicates of 15 chicks or eight pen replicates of six poults assigned to each of three dietary treatments from Weeks 1 to 7 (broilers) or to Week 14 (turkeys). Fusarium moniliforme (M-1325) culture material was added to a typical corn-soybean basal diet to supply 0, 25, or 50 mg FB1/kg diet.

Our objective, therefore, was to establish base line clinical chemistry reference values for mourning doves to assist with establishing clinical diagnoses. Wild mourning doves were captured 19 March 1996 to 8 August 1996, and 6 February 1998 to 12 May 1998; blood samples were collected from 382 mourning doves.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe fluorescent sensitive SYPRO Red dye was successfully employed to stain proteins in two-dimensional gels for protein identification by peptide mass fingerprinting. Proteins which are not chemically modified during the SYPRO Red staining process are well digested enzymatically in the gel and hence the resulting peptides can be efficiently eluted and analysed by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). A SYPRO Red two-dimensional gel of a complex protein extract from Candida albicans was analysed by MALDI-TOF MS.

Methods: From July 10, 1995, to June 30, 1998, 98 pts were included. Clinical staging was performed according to FIGO's criteria (22 Ib2; 38 IIb; 25 IIIb; and 6 IV).
Objectives: The aim of this study was to show the learning experience of the employment of laparoscopic lymphadenectomy followed by a Schauta operation to treat patients with cervical carcinoma at a university hospital and to evaluate the feasibility, complications, hospital stay, delay in return to work, and overall survival of this procedure.
Methods: Between June 1, 1993, and December 30, 1997, 56 patients were selected. Surgical treatment began with a pelvic laparoscopic lymphadenectomy followed by a Schauta operation.
