Building a supportive clinical learning environment: Orienting newly licensed nurses to their impact on the professional development of physician trainees.

What Was The Educational Challenge?: Nurses play an essential role in the professional development of physician trainees within the clinical learning environment (CLE), but rarely receive formal training regarding this role.

What Was The Solution?: Utilizing a multifaceted, systematic approach, we developed an educational program for newly licensed nurses which addressed their role in the CLE and the professional development of physician trainees.

How Was The Solution Implemented?: We delivered two 90-minute workshops to approximately 40 nurses during the 2021-2022 academic year.

Sphingolipid profiling as a biomarker of type 2 diabetes risk: evidence from the MIDUS and PREDIMED studies.

Background: Type 2 diabetes (T2D) has become a worldwide pandemic. While ceramides may serve as intermediary between obesity-related lipotoxicity and T2D, the relationship with simple glycosphingolipids remains uncertain. The aim of this study was to characterize the associations between blood glycosphingolipid and ceramide species with T2D and to identify a circulating sphingolipid profile that could serve as novel biomarker for T2D risk.

Lipidomic Signature of Healthy Diet Adherence and Its Association with Cardiometabolic Risk in American Adults.

Background: The aim of this study was to identify the blood lipidomic profile associated with a healthy eating pattern in a middle-aged US population sample and to determine its relationship with metabolic disorders and cardiovascular risk (CVR).

Methodology: Self-reported information about diet and blood samples were obtained from 2114 adult participants in the Midlife in the United States study (MIDUS). Food intake data were used to design a Healthy Diet Index (MIDUS-HEI) and to evaluate the predictive value by examining its association with health variables.

MouseGoggles: an immersive virtual reality headset for mouse neuroscience and behavior.

Small-animal virtual reality (VR) systems have become invaluable tools in neuroscience for studying complex behavior during head-fixed neural recording, but they lag behind commercial human VR systems in terms of miniaturization, immersivity and advanced features such as eye tracking. Here we present MouseGoggles, a miniature VR headset for head-fixed mice that delivers independent, binocular visual stimulation over a wide field of view while enabling eye tracking and pupillometry in VR. Neural recordings in the visual cortex validate the quality of image presentation, while hippocampal recordings, associative reward learning and innate fear responses to virtual looming stimuli demonstrate an immersive VR experience.

Vice Chairs of Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology: Prevalence, Scope, and Ongoing Challenges.

Objective: To estimate the prevalence of the Vice Chair of Education (VCE) role in obstetrics and gynecology (OBGYN) departments and to describe the demographics, responsibilities, resource allocation, and challenges faced by individuals in this role.

Design: A 2-part survey was developed with the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics (APGO) Member Engagement Workgroup.

Setting: National survey.

Extortion experiences of recent adult immigrants from Latin America: self-reported prevalence, associated costs, and current mental health.

Violence across Latin America is an increasingly important factor influencing migration to the US. A particular form of violence that is experienced by many Latinx migrants is extortion. This research analyzes the extortion experiences of Latinx immigrant adults arriving at the US southern border and the impact these experiences have on mental health.

Leveraging the Impact of Nurses on the Educational Experience and Professional Development of the Physician Trainee.

Nurses play an essential role in the receptivity and support of the learning environment for physician trainees as they develop their clinical skills and professional identity. Although effective interprofessional teams are increasingly identified as critical to patient safety, their impact on the educational experience of learners in the clinical environment is under-recognized. We argue that highlighting nurses' contributions to physician trainee development at the start of their employment in an academic setting can encourage all providers to actively build a supportive clinical learning environment.

Continuous professional development (CPD) in health care refers to the process of lifelong learning including the acquisition of new competencies, knowledge, and professional growth throughout the career of a health care professional. Since implementation, there has seen little change or innovation in CPD. This perspective will review the current state of CPD, including the challenges in traditional CPD models, foundations and strategies for redesign to meet the needs of current and future physicians, and suggestions for changes to modernize CPD.

Identifying illnesses that may have triggered GBS is crucial, as they could affect the course of the disease.

Real World Data of Viral Suppression With Darunavir/Cobicistat and Dolutegravir/Rilpivirine Among Treatment-Experienced Patients Living With Multidrug-Resistant HIV.

Despite the effectiveness of the TRIO regimen in maintaining viral suppression, as seen in the ANRS 139 TRIO trial, one drawback is the high pill burden. However, with the development of newer antiretrovirals, this regimen can be simplified. The combination of both co-formulated darunavir/cobicistat and dolutegravir/rilpivirine keeps the integrity of the TRIO regimen while decreasing daily pill count from 12 to 2 tablets daily.

Healthy Eating as Potential Mediator of Inverse Association between Purpose in Life and Waist Circumference: Emerging Evidence from US and Chilean Cohorts.

High sense of purpose in life, a fundamental domain of eudaimonic well-being, has been consistently associated with lower risk for various obesity-related chronic diseases. Although this psychological feature correlates with some health behaviors as potential mediators, its association with healthy eating remains less explored. In addition, studies of these psycho-behavioral and health relationships in the South American population are lacking.

[Limitations and opportunities for the appropriation of the Mediterranean diet in Chilean adults with diagnostic elements of metabolic syndrome].

Background: a healthy food intake pattern, specifically the Mediterranean diet (MedDiet), is a factor associated with reduced risk, lower prevalence, and better management of chronic diseases. However, there is limited information regarding how patients integrate proposals for adherence to this food pattern in their daily lives. Objective: to identify factors and conditions that influence adherence to the MedDiet in Chile.

Characterizing the Role of Surgical Vice Chair of Education: Stakeholder Needs and Current Practices.

Introduction: The role of a Department of Surgery (DoS) Vice Chair of Education (VCE) is a relatively new position intended to address the many changes and initiatives in medical education. The primary responsibilities and functions of a surgical VCE are not well described in the literature. This study examines the perceptions of stakeholders and current VCEs to develop a newly established position of VCE within an academic DoS.

Mediterranean diet and psychological well-being intervention to reverse metabolic syndrome in Chile (CHILEMED trial).

Psychosocial status and lifestyle are key risk factors of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), which, in turn, are main drivers of healthcare costs and morbimortality worldwide, including Chile. Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) is one of the healthiest dietary patterns under study. However, its impact on high-risk conditions, such as metabolic syndrome (MetS), and NCDs outside the Mediterranean Basin remains mostly unexplored.

Attenuation of Dopaminergic Neurodegeneration in a Parkinson's Model through Regulation of Xanthine Dehydrogenase (XDH-1) Expression by the RNA Editase, ADR-2.

Differential RNA editing by adenosine deaminases that act on RNA (ADARs) has been implicated in several neurological disorders, including Parkinson's disease (PD). Here, we report results of a RNAi screen of genes differentially regulated in mutants, normally encoding the only catalytically active ADAR in , ADR-2. Subsequent analysis of candidate genes that alter the misfolding of human α-synuclein (α-syn) and dopaminergic neurodegeneration, two PD pathologies, reveal that reduced expression of , the ortholog of human xanthine dehydrogenase (XDH), is protective against α-synuclein-induced dopaminergic neurodegeneration.

Background: Kratom () consumption and associated health effects have raised debates in the United States. Although most people using this herb do not experience adverse health effects associated with kratom use, medical providers should be knowledgeable of emerging substances and concurrent, sequential, or simultaneous use of other drugs which may impact healthcare recommendations and prescribing practices.
