Failure of acyclovir to enhance the antiviral effect of alpha lymphoblastoid interferon on HBe-seroconversion in chronic hepatitis B. A multi-centre randomized controlled trial.

Serum HBeAg levels and HBe-seroconversion were investigated in patients with chronic HBeAg-positive hepatitis who were randomized to receive either alpha lymphoblastoid interferon (5 megaunits subcutaneously daily for 16 weeks) plus acyclovir (2 g intravenously daily during weeks 1 and 2 and weeks 9 and 10) (n = 49) or no treatment (n = 48). HBeAg levels in serial dilutions of patient serum were assessed quantitatively by radioimmunoassay and compared with the values found for negative control serum. One year after the start of therapy 44 treated patients and 43 control patients were available for follow-up.

Severe chronic active hepatitis (autoimmune type) mimicked by coinfection of hepatitis C and human immunodeficiency viruses.

Severe chronic active hepatitis, defined as the presence of a fivefold increase in serum aminotransferases and a twofold rise in gamma globulin for at least 10 weeks, is considered a progressive immunological liver disease requiring corticosteroid treatment, particularly when serum autoantibodies and a severe lymphoplasmacellular periportal infiltrate are found in the liver biopsy specimen. A 38 year old man who fulfilled the criteria for severe chronic active hepatitis is described. His sex, his homosexuality, and the presence of antibodies against HIV, however, led to the suspicion of a coinfection with hepatitis C virus (HCV) rather than autoimmune disease.

Development and functional significance of private speech among attention-deficit hyperactivity disordered and normal boys.

We compared the development of spontaneous private speech and its relationship to self-controlled behavior in a sample of 6- to 12-year-olds with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and matched normal controls. Thirty-eight boys were observed in their classrooms while engaged in math seatwork. Results revealed that ADHD children were delayed in private speech development in that they engaged in more externalized, self-fuiding and less inaudible, internalized speech than normal youngsters.

Effects of exogenous monoiodotyrosine on the serum levels of anterior pituitary hormones.

Roentgen therapy for infections: an historical review.

Radiation was used extensively for the treatment of all types of infections before the advent of antibiotics. Although this mode of therapy is now in disrepute, radiation therapists of that era were firm believers in the ability of radiation to cure infections. A review of the literature suggests, but certainly does not prove, that low-dose local radiation, in the range of 75 to 300 roentgens, is an effective treatment modality for a wide variety of infections.

Alpha lymphoblastoid interferon and acyclovir for chronic hepatitis delta.

Ten patients with chronic hepatitis type D were treated during 4 months with alpha lymphoblastoid interferon in combination with two 2-week courses of acyclovir. Median percentage of HDAg-positive hepatocytes decreased from 11 to 1, p = 0.0225.

Modulation of the renin-aldosterone system by iodotyrosines as tyrosine hydroxylase inhibitors.

This study shows that MIT and DIT stimulate aldosterone secretion. This may be due to their tyrosine hydroxylase inhibitory property. Dopamine abolishes the stimulation.

16,16-Dimethyl prostaglandin E2 and/or syngeneic bone marrow transplantation increase mouse survival after supra-lethal total body irradiation.

We evaluated the effects of 16,16-dimethyl prostaglandin E2 (dm-PGE2), with and without syngeneic bone marrow transplantation (BMT) on the survival and hematopoietic recovery of mice given 14-20 Gy total body irradiation (TBI). Survival of mice given combined dm-PGE2 and BMT was improved significantly over that of mice given either treatment alone. The 30-day survival after 14, 15, 16 or 18 Gy TBI for combined treatment was 97, 90, 20 or 10 percent, respectively.

Epidemiologic aspects of toilet training.

Toilet training is becoming an increasingly important child care issue as child raising becomes an institutional enterprise. This paper reviews the literature of the last 40 years, focusing on the epidemiology of the development of day and night bladder control. The studies indicate that bladder control is usually obtained between 24 months and 48 months of age.

The effect of long endurance running on natural killer cells in marathoners.

Ten experienced marathoners were exercised 3 h in the laboratory. Blood samples were collected at 0 h baseline, 1 h exercise, and 5 min, 1.5 h, 6 h, and 21 h recovery and were analyzed for total number of lymphocytes expressing membrane antigens found on natural killer (NK) cells.

Extrathyroidal physiology of monoiodotyrosine in humans.

Normal serum monoiodotyrosine (MIT) levels (n = 152) were 0.69 +/- 0.20 nmol/l.

Neuroendocrine and stress hormone changes during mirthful laughter.

Positive emotional activities have been suggested as modifiers of neuroendocrine hormones involved in the classical stress response. To detect changes in these components during a mirthful laughter experience, the authors studied 10 healthy male subjects. Five experimental subjects viewed a 60 minute humor video and five control subjects did not.

Intraocular distribution of intravitreally administered amphotericin B in normal and vitrectomized eyes.

A study was performed to determine how amphotericin B is distributed in the eye after direct intravitreal injection. Radiolabeled amphotericin B was administered by direct injection into the vitreous space of unmodified phakic control or vitrectomized aphakic eyes in the rabbit model. The eyes were removed at different post-injection times, frozen and dissected into anatomical subparts of cornea, aqueous, iris, lens, vitreous and sclera-choroid-retina.

The Children of Alcoholics Screening Test: relationship to sex, family environment, and social adjustment in adolescents.

The Children of Alcoholics Screening Test (CAST), the Family Environment Scale (relationship scales only), and the Social Maladjustment Scale were administered to 494 male and female adolescents with a mean age of 16.6 years. High CAST scores were found to be related significantly to low family cohesion, high family conflict, and low overall family support.

Effect of dietary protein on serum insulin and glucagon levels in hyper- and normocholesterolemic men.

This study was designed to test the effect of dietary protein on blood levels of insulin and glucagon. Twelve normocholesterolemic (less than 200 mg/dl) and 11 hypercholesterolemic greater than 240 mg/dl) healthy male subjects, 31-62 years of age, were randomly given 3 liquid test meals 1 week apart. Meals were identical except for the protein source (soybean, casein, or protein free).

Aging and human cone photopigments.

We used a noninvasive technique to investigate changes in photoreceptor function with aging in observers 13-69 years of age. This technique, steady-state color matching, provides estimates of the optical density of cone photopigments, the illuminance that bleaches half of the photopigment, and the ratio of the primaries required at moderate light levels. In normal human retinas, we found that the optical density for a 4-deg field is affected minimally by aging from the second through the seventh decades.

Long-term follow-up of antiviral combination therapy in chronic hepatitis B.

For patients with chronic hepatitis B e (HBe)-positive hepatitis, long-term results of pilot studies with lymphoblastoid interferon-alpha, acyclovir, or a combination, and of a randomized controlled trial of interferon/desciclovir combination therapy are presented. HBe seroconversion was observed in more than 40 percent of patients treated with combination therapy, 30 percent with interferon therapy, 18 percent with acyclovir, and 0 percent with no treatment. HBe reactivation occurred in two patients with cirrhosis.
