Pesticides occur in groundwater as a result of agricultural activity. Their monitoring under the Water Framework Directive is based on only a few spot-sampling measurements per year despite their temporal variability. Passive sampling, which was successfully tested in surface water to provide a more representative assessment of contamination, could be applied to groundwater for a better definition of its contamination.

Isoproturon-imprinted polypyrrole films were electrochemically synthesized onto glassy carbon (GC) electrodes in an ethanol/aqueous solution of pyrrole as a monomer, isoproturon as a template molecule and LiClO as supporting electrolyte. Electropolymerization was performed by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry. The isoproturon template molecules were successfully trapped in the polypyrrole film where they created artificial recognition cavities.

Here, we present a surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) nanosensor for environmental pollutants detection. This study was conducted on three polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs): benzo[a]pyrene (BaP), fluoranthene (FL), and naphthalene (NAP). SERS substrates were chemically functionalized using 4-dodecyl benzenediazonium-tetrafluoroborate and SERS analyses were conducted to detect the pollutants alone and in mixtures.

A commercial molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) dedicated to glyphosate (GLY) and its main metabolite, aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA), was lately assessed as "POCIS-like" sampler on mineral water. The obtained results were encouraging with 111 and 122 mL day as sampling rates for GLY and AMPA, respectively. Therefore, before applying this passive sampler to environmental waters, the commercial phase was tested on different water matrices as a solid-phase extraction (SPE) device.

For more than 15 years, integrative passive sampling has been successfully used for monitoring contaminants in water, but no passive sampling device exists for strongly polar organic compounds, such as glyphosate. We thus propose a polar organic chemical integrative sampler (POCIS)-like tool dedicated to glyphosate and its main degradation product aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA), and describe the laboratory calibration of such a tool for calculating the sampling rates of glyphosate and AMPA. This passive sampler consists of a POCIS with molecularly imprinted polymer as a receiving phase and a polyethersulfone diffusion membrane.

Three molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) have been synthesized in order to bind efficiently glyphosate (GLY) in natural waters (mineral and underground). Since the target analyte is polar and hydrophilic, electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonds have been favored with two templates (phenylphosphonic acid and diethyl(α-aminobenzyl)-phosphonic acid) and two functional monomers (1-allyl-2-thiourea and methacrylic acid). MIPs have been assessed by comparison of the recoveries obtained with MIP and NIP (non imprinted polymer) by solid-phase extraction (SPE).

This study aimed at evaluating and comparing five integrative samplers for the monitoring of indicator and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in water: semi-permeable membrane device (SPMD), silicone rubber, low-density polyethylene (LDPE) strip, Chemcatcher and a continuous-flow integrative sampler (CFIS). These samplers were spiked with performance reference compounds (PRCs) and then simultaneously exposed under constant agitation and temperature in a 200 L stainless steel tank for periods ranging from one day to three months. A constant PCB concentration of about 1 ng·L(-1) was achieved by immersing a large amount of silicone rubber sheets ("dosing sheets") spiked with the target PCBs.

Polar organic chemical integrative samplers (POCISs) for the monitoring of polar pesticides in groundwater were tested on two sites in order to evaluate their applicability by comparison with the spot-sampling approach. This preliminary study shows that, as in surface water, POCIS is a useful tool, especially for the screening of substances at low concentration levels that are not detected by laboratory analysis of spot samples. For quantitative results, a rough estimation is obtained.

The aim of this paper is, from the perspective of improvement of Total Suspended Solids (TSS) measurement by UV spectrophotometry, to study the influence of two pretreatments on the UV responses of urban wastewater (sonication and mechanical grinding). The study of optical properties evolution the different phenomena involved and show mechanical grinding as a potential pre-treatment is prosed. Mechanical grinding is applied to samples characterised by different TSS concentration and particle size distributions in order to test its feasability.
