Background: Public pressure exists in the United States to eliminate race-day furosemide administration despite its efficacy in decreasing the severity of equine exercise pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH). No effective alternative prophylaxis strategies have been identified.

Objective: To investigate alternative protocols to race-day furosemide that might mitigate EIPH.

A Hybrid Monte Carlo Self-Consistent Field Model of Physical Gels of Telechelic Polymers.

We developed a hybrid Monte Carlo self-consistent field technique to model physical gels composed of ABA triblock copolymers and gain insight into the structure and interactions in such gels. The associative A blocks of the polymers are confined to small volumes called nodes, while the B block can move freely as long as it is connected to the A blocks. A Monte Carlo algorithm is used to sample the node configurations on a lattice, and Scheutjens-Fleer self-consistent field (SF-SCF) equations are used to determine the change in free energy.

Performance Evaluation of a Prototype Architect Antibody Assay for Babesia microti.

The tick-borne protozoan is responsible for more than 200 cases of transfusion-transmitted babesiosis (TTB) infection in the United States that have occurred over the last 30 years. Measures to mitigate the risk of TTB include nucleic acid testing (NAT) and antibody testing. A fully automated prototype antibody test was developed on the Architect instrument.

Finding the Ledge: Sagittal Analysis of Bony Landmarks of the Orbit.

Purpose: This study determined the average distances and angles between anatomic landmarks within the orbit, with an emphasis on localization of the orbital process of the palatine bone. This information will help the surgeon with treatment planning and surgical procedures.

Patients And Methods: Four anatomic landmarks were identified retrospectively on computed tomograms of 100 adult Caucasian patients (50 men and 50 women): the top of the infraorbital margin superior to the infraorbital foramen (point A), the top of the orbital process of the palatine bone (point B), the anteriormost bony portion of the superior orbital fissure (point C), and the ventrolateral aspect of the bony entrance of the optic canal (point D).

Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) is used to denature and solubilize proteins, especially membrane and other hydrophobic proteins. A quantitative method to determine the concentration of SDS using the dye Stains-All is known. However, this method lacks the accuracy and reproducibility necessary for use with protein solutions where SDS concentration is a critical factor, so we modified this method after examining multiple parameters (solvent, pH, buffers, and light exposure).

Interactions between nodes in a physical gel network of telechelic polymers; self-consistent field calculations beyond the cell model.

Triblock copolymers, with associative end-groups and a soluble middle block, form flower-like micelles in dilute solutions and a physical gel at higher concentrations. In a gel the middle blocks form bridges between domains/nodes that contain the ends. We combine the self-consistent field theory with a simple molecular model to evaluate the pair potential between the nodes.

In a recent RCT comparing biodegradable (Inion CPS) with titanium (KLS Martin) plates and screws for fixation of osteotomies or fractures, we found that in 21% of the cases the surgeon decided intra-operatively to switch from biodegradable to titanium. The aim of the current retrospective cohort study was to analyse the reasons for these switches in order to find predictor variables that may be helpful in the decision to use biodegradable devices or not. Recently, SETD2, located at 3p21, was identified as a new candidate ccRCC tumor-suppressor gene. The combined mutational frequency in ccRCC tumors of VHL and SETD2 suggests that there are still undiscovered tumor-suppressor genes on 3p.

Hybrid Monte Carlo self-consistent field approach to model a thin layer of a polyelectrolyte gel near an adsorbing surface.

The use of thin layers of a surface bound (polyelectrolyte) hydrogels for measuring the concentration of metal ions from electrolyte solutions is our motivation for modeling such hydrogels. The gels are composed of polymeric species with conformational degrees of freedom on the nanometer scale. The polymer conformations are affected by the presence of cross-links in the gel on a five to ten times larger length scale, and the repulsive interactions generated by the charges along the chains.
