Cross-reactive T cell immunity between common cold coronaviruses and SARS-CoV-2 may influence COVID-19 susceptibility. To identify cross-reactive CD8 T cell epitopes, we analyzed responses to 21 homologous SARS-CoV-2 replicase peptides in 177 people living with HIV (PLWH) on antiretroviral therapy, of which 133 did not have prior SARS-CoV-2 infection. Replicase peptides induced IFN-γ responses in 63% of the SARS-CoV-2-naïve individuals and in 73% of individuals with prior SARS-CoV-2-infection.

Background: Splenic dysfunction in children with sickle cell disease (SCD) increases the risk of serious bacterial infections; therefore, families are instructed to seek medical care in the presence of fever. Recurrent hospital admissions of patients with SCD cause financial and resource burdens on caregivers and the health care system, contributing to a lower quality of life in this patient population. Recent studies have documented a reduction of the incidence of bacterial infections among these patients managed on an outpatient basis with no association of increased morbidity and mortality.

We conducted a genome-wide association study on income among individuals of European descent (N = 668,288) to investigate the relationship between socio-economic status and health disparities. We identified 162 genomic loci associated with a common genetic factor underlying various income measures, all with small effect sizes (the Income Factor). Our polygenic index captures 1-5% of income variance, with only one fourth due to direct genetic effects.

Expression quantitative trait loci (eQTL) studies typically consider exon expression of genes and discard intronic RNA sequencing reads despite their information on RNA metabolism. Here, we quantify genetic effects on exon and intron levels of genes and their ratio in lymphoblastoid cell lines, revealing thousands of cis-QTLs of each type. While genetic effects are often shared between cis-QTL types, 7814 (47%) are not detected as top cis-QTLs at exon levels.

In this issue, we established rapid, cost-effective, and simple detection methods including recombines polymerase amplification with lateral flow dipstick (RPA-LFD) and real-time RPA for cyprinid herpesvirus 3(CyHV-3), and evaluated their sensitivity, specificity, and applicability, the real-time RPA method could achieve sensitive diagnosis of CyHV-3 within 1.3 copies per reaction, respectively.
