Article Synopsis
  • Maternal SARS-CoV-2 infection can potentially impact pregnancy outcomes, but the specific effects on placental inflammatory and cardiovascular markers have not been extensively studied.
  • This study analyzed placental samples from infected and non-infected women to evaluate levels of 177 proteins, while also considering the timing of infection during pregnancy.
  • Results indicated that women with SARS-CoV-2 infection did not show significant differences in placental protein levels or perinatal outcomes compared to non-infected women, regardless of when the infection occurred.

Article Synopsis
  • Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy are a major cause of serious health issues for mothers and newborns, prompting a need for early identification of women at high risk to improve care and resource allocation.
  • A systematic review found 110 studies involving over 506,000 women, but due to significant variability in tests and outcomes, most results were too diverse to combine effectively.
  • Some predictors, like the sFlt-1/PlGF ratio, showed potential for forecasting risks, but they haven't been validated in external studies, highlighting a gap in reliable predictive tools for managing these conditions.

Background: Metformin is a hypoglycaemic medication that has been proposed to treat or prevent preeclampsia. Combining national birth data from Scotland and Sweden, we investigated whether metformin used during pregnancy was associated with an altered risk of developing a hypertensive disorder of pregnancy.

Methods: We utilised data from two population-based cohorts: Scotland (2012-2018) and Sweden (2007-2019).

Purpose: Hemispherotomy is an effective surgery for intractable pediatric hemispheric epilepsy. Over the years, the surgical goal has shifted from a complete hemispheric resection (anatomical hemispherectomy) to a disconnective hemispherotomy (DH). Multiple techniques for DH have been described, and often, anterior temporal lobectomy (ATL, with hippocampal resection) is performed.

Background: The aim of this study was to examine to what extent malocclusion and parafunctional habits contribute to the development of signs and symptoms associated with temporomandibular disorders (TMD) in schoolchildren with mixed dentition in Croatia in a sample of 338 children, aged 9 to 15 years.

Methods: TMD signs and symptoms assessed by the clinician were joint function and pain, masticatory muscles tenderness, range of mandibular motion, and joint sounds. To evaluate subjective symptoms and parafunctions, children and parents were asked about the presence of headaches, jaw locking, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) sounds, pain during mouth opening, or bruxism, as well as parafunctions like biting pencils or nails, chewing hard candies or ice, daily gum chewing, opening bottles with teeth, engaging in jaw play, thumb-sucking, and clenching/grinding teeth.

Background And Objectives: Loss of speech due to injury or disease is devastating. Here, we report a novel speech neuroprosthesis that artificially articulates building blocks of speech based on high-frequency activity in brain areas never harnessed for a neuroprosthesis before: anterior cingulate and orbitofrontal cortices, and hippocampus.

Methods: A 37-year-old male neurosurgical epilepsy patient with intact speech, implanted with depth electrodes for clinical reasons only, silently controlled the neuroprosthesis almost immediately and in a natural way to voluntarily produce 2 vowel sounds.

Purpose: Using COR theory to study developments of health and other key resources in self-employed workers in Sweden over 6 years, this study: (1) explored whether the heterogenous group of self-employed workers contained subgroups with different health trajectories, (2) investigated whether these were more typical for certain individuals (with respect to age, gender, sector, education, employment status), and (3) compared the different health trajectories regarding resource development in mental well-being, business resources, employment status, work ability.

Method: The study used data from the Swedish longitudinal occupational survey of health (SLOSH) and included participants working as self-employed or combiner (N = 2642).

Result: Five trajectories were identified with latent class growth curve model analysis (LCGM).

Stab wound analysis is a relatively new field of study in forensic science, and there is currently much debate regarding the effectiveness of the analysis due to a lack of validation studies. Furthermore, the underlying viewpoints on the success of stab wound analysis vary. Examination of cut marks, for example, can reveal a variety of characteristics which can be used to determine the type of weapon that was used to inflict them.

  • Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS) is a severe epilepsy disorder in children that is hard to treat; when medications fail, surgeries like vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) and corpus callosotomy (CC) may be options, with CC often being more effective.
  • This study reviewed the outcomes of 127 children with LGS who had undergone CC after unsuccessful VNS, focusing on their seizure types and surgery results.
  • The findings showed that about 83% of patients experienced at least a 50% reduction in drop attacks after CC, demonstrating that CC is an important option for improving seizure control with low surgical risks.

Pre-eclampsia is a leading cause of maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. Characterised by the onset of hypertension and proteinuria in the second half of pregnancy, it can lead to maternal end-organ injury such as cerebral ischemia and oedema, pulmonary oedema and renal failure, and potentially fatal outcomes for both mother and fetus. The causes of the different maternal end-organ phenotypes of pre-eclampsia and why some women develop pre-eclampsia condition early in pregnancy have yet to be elucidated.
