Nitrogenase in Frankia from root nodules of Alnus incana (L.) Moench: immunolocalization of the Fe- and MoFe-proteins during vesicle differentiation.

The localization of nitrogenase was studied in root nodules of Alnus incana (L.) Moench in symbiosis with a local source of Frankia. Nodules were fixed in glutaraldehyde and embedded in Epon or LR White.

Clinical results in patients provided with conical crown retained dentures.

During 1985 and 1986, 25 patients were treated with conical crown retained dentures, 26 in the maxillary arch and four in the mandible. The primary indication for having used these dentures was the presence of only a few teeth, mostly in unfavorable positions. Clinical findings after 24 to 43 months are reported and considered promising.

Developmental patterns related to nitrogen fixation in the heterocystous cyanobacteriumNostoc harboured in distinct colonies along the stem ofGunnera magellanica Lam. plantlets were examined using successive plant sections. Pronounced morphological, physiological and biochemical alterations in the cyanobacterium were demonstrated.

Immunological characterization of nitrogenase in the filamentous non-heterocystous cyanobacterium Oscillatoria limosa.

The filamentous non-heterocystous cyanobacterium Oscillatoria limosa was subjected to Western blot analyses using two antisera raised against the small subunit (Fe-protein) of the nitrogenase complex. Two polypeptides were recognized in nitrogen-fixing cultures irrespective of the antiserum used while no bands were detectable in nitrate-grown cultures. The apparent molecular weights of the two polypeptides were approximately 40.

The influence of dental amalgam placement on mercury, selenium, and glutathione peroxidase in man.

Amalgam restorations were inserted in eight healthy persons, previously unprovided with dental restorations, who had several severe carious lesions. The mean number of surfaces restored were 16.1 (range, 11 to 22).

Mercury, selenium, and glutathione peroxidase before and after amalgam removal in man.

In 10 healthy persons all amalgam fillings were replaced with gold inlays. Blood and urinary levels were measured on 10 occasions during a 4-month period before and a 12-month period after amalgam removal. These variables were also measured three times in 10 healthy controls.

TheGunnera symbiosis: DNA restriction fragment length polymorphism and protein comparisons ofNostoc symbionts.

Cyanobacteria separated from symbiosis with several species of the angiospermGunnera were comparatively characterized and correlated with the locales and taxonomy of their host plants. All were identified as strains ofNostoc. Protein profiles and DNA restriction fragment length polymorphisms (from hybridizations with heterologousnifH andglnA probes) determined that three of the four cyanobacteria fromGunnera grown at one site in Sweden, each from a different host species, were very similar or identical.

Primary aldosteronism. Study of twenty-six operated cases.

A follow-up study of 26 patients operated on for suspicion of primary aldosteronism was made. The preoperative investigative procedures, including serum potassium concentration, urinary aldosterone excretion, and plasma renin activity, could not differentiate between patients with cortical adenomas and those with cortical hyperplasia or normal glands. Preoperative roentgenologic examinations visualized only one third of the adenomas.

A 2-year follow-up study of titanium crowns.

In 1986, 149 patients were provided with titanium crowns. The method used for fabrication of the titanium copings involved two principles: machine duplication of models and electric discharge machining. For the veneering of the copings, Isosit was used for the first 90% of the crowns in the series, and the Dentacolor-Silicoater technique for the last 10%.

Cross-sectional study of patients fitted with fixed partial dentures with special reference to the caries situation.

The caries situation among 30 patients with fixed partial dentures was examined 3 yr after cementation of the constructions. The fit of the crowns on the abutment teeth, the size of the interproximal areas and the relation between the crown margin and the gingival margin were registered. Risk factors for caries development, such as salivary factors, microbiologic factors, oral hygiene and diet were evaluated for each patient.

Professional role and autonomy in physiotherapy. A study of Swedish physiotherapists.

A study of 163 physiotherapists' conception of their professional role and autonomy and the implications for their work has been completed. About half (55%) felt that physicians and other staff members primarily expected them to act as independent professionals, while about one-third (34%) felt that they were expected to undertake treatment after referral from or discussion with the physician. Most physiotherapists (86%) were firmly in control of their treatment methods, but had somewhat restricted freedom in deciding whom to treat, and when to terminate treatment.

Treatment of bacterial vaginosis in women with vaginal bleeding complications or discharge and harboring Mobiluncus.

A double-blind study of treatment for bacterial vaginosis (BV), using metronidazole tablets 500 mg 3 times daily for 10 days versus placebo in the same regimen, was performed on 42 outpatients with irregular bleeding episodes or discharge attending a gynecological clinic. All patients had motile rods in wet smears in addition to fulfilling the criteria for BV. Treatment gave a cure rate of 76% versus 5% in the placebo group.

Battered wives--measures by the social and medical services.

The social files and medical records of 98 acutely battered wives who attended a surgical emergency department were studied. Although all women had been hospitalized during the decade preceding the present incident, wife battering was documented in the records in only 18%. The majority of the women (73%) were also known to the social services, but battering was documented in less than half of the cases in the social service files.

Urinary tract calculi dissolved by means of renacidin. An experimental study.

Removal urinary tract calculi by surgery may be difficult in patients with poor health or in patients who have been operated on earlier. By means of percutaneous nephrostomy it is possible to irrigate the renal pelvis with Renacidin to dissolve calculi. Renacidin is a buffer and mainly consists of citrate and gluconate.

Follow-up of patients treated for urinary bladder calculi.

Fifty patients were followed-up for an average of 3 years after treatment for urinary bladder calculi. In 10 of these (20%) altogether 20 metabolic or endocrine diagnoses were revealed at follow-up: hypercalcaemia, 8; hyperuricosaemia, 4; high parathormone, 3; hyperuricosuria, 2; hypercalciuria, 2: hyperoxaluria, 1. About half of the patients also had other diagnoses, dominated by outflow obstruction at the prostatic level, followed by neurogenic bladder disorder.

Nephrectomy in unilateral chronic pyelonephritis. A long-term follow-up study.

In order to study the effectiveness of unilateral nephrectomy as a treatment for chronic unilateral pyelonephritis, 15 consecutive patients who had undergone this operation were followed up. The patients had been operated on 8.9 years (mean) earlier.

Hospitalization during chemotherapy for small cell lung cancer.

Ninety patients with small cell lung cancer, who received combination chemotherapy, were studied with regard to hospitalization during the treatment period. Chemotherapy was discontinued in case of tumour progression, or, if progression did not occur, after 18 months. The mean hospitalization time was 18 days per patient which constituted 6.

Mercury, selenium, and glutathione peroxidase in dental personnel.

Eighteen persons, dentists and nurses, with urinary mercury levels higher than the group median value of all dental personnel in the country of Västerbotten were compared with a group consisting of 15 persons with low urinary mercury levels working in the same clinics. A statistically significant difference between the high urinary mercury group and the low urinary mercury group could be seen in the plasma mercury level. In each group a statistically significant relation could be seen between the plasma mercury level and the total number of amalgam surfaces.

Staphylococcus saprophyticus in males with symptoms of chronic prostatitis.

Staphylococcus saprophyticus was isolated in 17 percent (12 of 71 men) during one year, but with a peak in August and September to 21 percent in patients referred to the urology department with a suspicion of chronic bacterial prostatitis. Seven of the 12 men had S. saprophyticus in highest number at the prostatic level.

Disinfection of prosthodontic impression materials: a literature review.

With the steadily growing frequency of AIDS, many dental researchers and clinicians have become more interested in disinfection and sterilization procedures. Impressions made in the clinic are potential contamination pathways. All patients may be considered as potentially infectious and the impressions must be treated the same as those made on so-called high-risk patients.

Clinical results with titanium crowns fabricated with machine duplication and spark erosion.

A new method for fabrication of metal crowns has been developed by one of the authors (M.A.).

Pancreatic islet-specific T-cell clones from nonobese diabetic mice.

We have produced a panel of islet-specific T-cell clones from nonobese diabetic (NOD) mice. These clones proliferate and make interleukin 2 in an antigen-specific manner in response to NOD antigen-presenting cells and islet cells. Most of the clones respond to islet-cell antigen from different mouse strains but only in the presence of antigen-presenting cells bearing the class II major histocompatibility complex of the NOD mouse.
