[Biomarkers of alcohol consumption, an update].

Alcohol disorder is a growing public health concern, both national and globally. Accurate assessment using standardized questionnaires is an important step towards effective management of the patient suffering from alcohol disorder. The use of biochemical laboratory measures often helps in obtaining independent estimations of alcohol use.

Maintenance of the asymmetric distribution of phospholipids across the plasma membrane is a prerequisite for the survival of erythrocytes. Various stimuli have been shown to induce scrambling of phospholipids and thereby exposure of phosphatidylserine (PS). In two types of patients, both with aberrant plasma cholesterol levels, we observed an aberrant PS exposure in erythrocytes upon stimulation.

Unexpected prolonged extreme hypocalcaemia and an inadequate PTH response in a patient with metastatic breast carcinoma.

Although hypercalcaemia is often encountered during the course of malignant disease, hypocalcaemia appears to be rather rare. We describe a 37-year-old patient with metastatic carcinoma of the breast, who developed extreme hypocalcaemia (as low as 0.75 mmol calcium per litre) after chemotherapy.

17 alpha-Hydroxylase deficiency; a rare cause of chronic hypertension.

We demonstrate a case with 17 alpha-hydroxylase deficiency that presented in an unusual way. The steroid metabolism and diagnostic procedures are discussed.

Transient increase of cytoplasmic calcium concentration in the rat hippocampus after kindling-induced seizures. An ultrastructural study with the oxalate-pyro-antimonate technique.

Kindling stimulations were applied to the Schaffer collateral/commissural fibers in the CA1 area of the dorsal rat hippocampus. In fully kindled animals the ultrastructural distribution of calcium was studied at different time intervals after an induced generalized seizure, using the oxalate-pyro-antimonate technique. Semi-quantitative analysis of the amount of precipitate revealed no change in the investigated structures analysed after 2 h or 24 h: boutons and spines of the Schaffer-collateral/pyramidal-dendrite synaptic contacts, cytoplasm and mitochondria of terminals on pyramidal cell bodies and smooth dendrites.
