The aim of this observational two-centre study was to investigate different aspects of pain in oocyte aspiration in conjunction with IVF, whether the preoperative information to women was sufficient, and which factor(s) influenced a woman's sense of security. The study group comprised 124 women who underwent IVF treatment. The visual analogue scale (VAS) was used to measure pain, and multiple-choice questions were used to evaluate satisfaction and sense of security.

Objective: To study the achievability of device weaning in patients receiving left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) as a bridge to transplantation.

Methods: Eighteen consecutive patients receiving a LVAD between September 1997 and June 2002 were included in the study. During a four-month follow-up, patients were repeatedly evaluated with right heart catheterization and echocardiography and, if functional improvement was observed, studied with the device turned off.

Purpose: Studies in mice and humans have shown that Follicular Fluid - Meiosis Activating Sterol (FF-MAS) induces meiotic maturation of immature oocytes in vitro. A multicenter, prospectively randomised study evaluated chromosomal status of embryos from FSH/hCG primed human immature oocytes, cultured with or without FF-MAS.

Methods: Denuded immature oocytes (n=365) were randomly allocated into inert control, FF-MAS 5 microM or 20 microM.

Non-genomic, rapid actions of steroids have long been known, suggesting the possible presence of non-classical steroid receptors. A membrane receptor for progestins (mPR) was recently described in the spotted seatrout, and transcripts of three related receptors (alpha, beta, and gamma) were subsequently identified in other species including human and mouse. To begin exploring the roles of mPRgamma in mammals, we have generated an antibody against this receptor.

Patients referred for heart transplantation evaluation may be accepted for transplantation, or denied due to existing contraindications or judged to be too well. There is little knowledge about long-term outcome in patients considered too well for transplantation. Ninety-five patients (mean age 47 +/- 12 years, 73% men) judged "too well" at evaluation were included in this study.

It is suggested that the symptoms of anorexia nervosa are physiological responses to starvation. There is no evidence of a neural or non-neural dysfunction that predisposes women for anorexia nervosa and the endocrine and psychological consequences of starvation are reversed once patients have re-learnt how to eat and regained a normal body weight. Because variability in the supply of food may be a common evolutionary condition, it is more likely that body weight is variable than constant in normal circumstances.

Female mice lacking AR display alterations in ovarian and uterine function. However, the biology of AR in the fallopian tube is not fully understood. To gain an insight into potential roles of AR in this tissue, we demonstrated that eCG treatment increased AR expression in a time-dependent manner and subsequent treatment with hCG decreased AR expression in mouse fallopian tubes.

Background: The aim of this study was to assess infertile couples' short-term emotional responses to their first IVF treatment (the women's and men's emotional reactions and their experiences of the marital relationship at different stages of the first treatment) and to relate these responses to the outcome of the IVF treatment.

Methods: The study was part of a prospective, longitudinal study where 117 couples participated. The women and men answered questionnaires separately concerning psychological and social factors at three occasions: before, during and 1 month after treatment.

The outcome in eating disorders remains poor and commonly used methods of treatment have little, if any effect. It is suggested that this situation has emerged because of the failure to realize that the symptoms of eating disorder patients are epiphenomena to starvation and the associated disordered eating. Humans have evolved to cope with the challenge of starvation and the neuroendocrine mechanisms that have been under this evolutionary pressure are anatomically versatile and show synaptic plasticity to allow for flexibility.

Progesterone receptor (PR) stimulation promotes survival in human and rat periovulatory granulosa cells. PR antagonists, Org 31710 and RU 486, both increase apoptosis and decrease cholesterol synthesis in these cells. The decrease in cholesterol synthesis also causes decreased synthesis of other products branching from the cholesterol synthesis pathway, including substrates for protein prenylation.

Background: A pre-ovarian block (POB) technique can be used for pain relief during oocyte retrieval in IVF. The local anaesthetic is deposited in the vaginal wall and between the vaginal wall and the peritoneal surface near the ovary using ultrasound guidance. The aim of this study was to test whether analgesia with POB resulted in improved pain relief compared to paracervical block (PCB).

Elimination of all animal material during both the derivation and long-term culture of human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) is necessary prior to future application of hESCs in clinical cell therapy. The potential consequences of transplanting xeno-contaminated hESCs into patients, such as an increased risk of graft rejection [Stem Cells 2006; 24:221-229] and the potential transfer of nonhuman pathogens, make existing hESC lines unsuitable for clinical applications. To avoid xeno-contamination during derivation and culture of hESCs, we first developed a xeno-free medium supplemented with human serum, which supports long-term (>50 passages) culture of hESCs in an undifferentiated state.

There have been recent reports of human embryonic stem cell (hESC) lines developing chromosomal aberrations after long-term culture, indicating an unstable genomic status due to the in vitro milieu. This raises concern, since it would limit their use in therapeutics. In this study the chromosomal status of five well-characterized hESC lines, SA002, SA002.

Background: A possible impact of paternal sperm quality on the outcome in children born after assisted reproductive technologies, especially ICSI, has been discussed. The objective of this study was to assess whether sperm concentration has any influence on growth and cognitive development in children born with a gestational age more than 32 weeks after ICSI or IVF.

Methods: Singleton children born after ICSI (n = 492) or IVF (n = 265) from five European countries were examined at age 5 years.

The irreversible conversion of methane into higher hydrocarbons in Titan's stratosphere implies a surface or subsurface methane reservoir. Recent measurements from the cameras aboard the Cassini orbiter fail to see a global reservoir, but the methane and smog in Titan's atmosphere impedes the search for hydrocarbons on the surface. Here we report spectra and high-resolution images obtained by the Huygens Probe Descent Imager/Spectral Radiometer instrument in Titan's atmosphere.

Although beta-adrenergic blockade is beneficial in heart failure, inhibition of central sympathetic outflow using moxonidine has been associated with increased mortality. In the present study, we studied the acute effects of the imidazoline-receptor agonist moxonidine on haemodynamics, NA (noradrenaline) kinetics and myocardial metabolism. Fifteen patients with CHF (chronic heart failure) were randomized to a single dose of 0.

Background: Transfer of several embryos after IVF results in a high multiple birth rate associated with increased morbidity and high costs for the neonatal care. In a previous randomized trial we demonstrated that a single embryo transfer (SET) strategy, including one fresh single embryo transfer and, if no live birth, one additional frozen-thawed SET, resulted in a live-birth rate that was not substantially lower than after double embryo transfer (DET) but markedly reduced the multiple birth rate.

Methods: We compared costs for maternal health care and productivity losses and paediatric costs for the SET and DET strategies.

Background: Daclizumab, a humanized monoclonal antibody against the interleukin-2 receptor, reduced the risk of rejection without increasing the risk of infection among renal-transplant recipients and, in a single-center trial, among cardiac-transplant recipients. We conducted a multicenter, placebo-controlled, double-blind study to confirm these results in cardiac-transplant patients.

Methods: We randomly assigned 434 recipients of a first cardiac transplant treated with standard immunosuppression (cyclosporine, mycophenolate mofetil, and corticosteroids) to receive five doses of daclizumab or placebo.

We present the case of an Australian girl with severe anorexia nervosa who had previously been resistant to treatment, and who was subsequently treated successfully by an innovative programme at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. The programme is based on a distinctive concept of causation of eating disorders in which it is postulated that they develop as a consequence of starvation rather than a primary mental disorder. The treatment focuses on relearning how to eat and perceive satiety using a unique feed-back system, together with provision of warmth, limitation of exercise and facilitating social adaptation.

In the past 20 years, a significant improvement has been shown in the treatment for infertility in both women and men through the development of in vitro fertilization (IVF) and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). Only donated sperm could be previously used for treatment; now oocytes can also be donated. Furthermore, the combination of IVF and ICSI with advanced genetic methods has made preimplantation genetic diagnosis possible for many genetic conditions.
