Screening for Psychological Distress in Healthcare Workers Using Machine Learning: A Proof of Concept.

The purpose of this study was to train and test preliminary models using two machine learning algorithms to identify healthcare workers at risk of developing anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder. The study included data from a prospective cohort study of 816 healthcare workers collected using a mobile application during the first two waves of COVID-19. Each week, the participants responded to 11 questions and completed three screening questionnaires (one for anxiety, one for depression, and one for post-traumatic stress disorder).

A potential growth thermal index for estimating juvenile Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) size-at-age across geographical scales.

We present a potential growth thermal index (PGTI) and assess its correlation with juvenile Atlantic salmon Salmo salar fork length data collected near the end of the growth season in a range of latitudinal locations and geographic scales (watershed, regional, continental) across the American north-east. The PGTI is based on two components: a water temperature-dependent growth curve and a water temperature time series continuously describing the thermal environment preceding fish sampling. Testing various shapes and characteristics of the temperature-growth curve against fish length data revealed strong positive correlations for all combinations.

The Integration of Value Assessment and Social Network Methods for Breast Health Navigation Among African Americans.

Objectives: A major strategy to reduce the impact of breast cancer (BC) among African Americans (AA) is patient navigation, defined here as individualized assistance for reducing barriers to healthcare use. The primary focus of this study was to estimate the added value of incorporating breast health promotion by navigated participants and the subsequent BC screenings that network members may obtain.

Methods: In this study, we compared the cost-effectiveness of navigation across 2 scenarios.

Introduction: Previous research has demonstrated the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic emergency on the wellbeing of healthcare workers. However, few research contributions reported a longitudinal evaluation of psychological distress and examined determinants of its duration and course over time. The present study aims to explore the impact of the pandemic emergency on HCWs mental health by adopting a longitudinal design and assessing mental health as combination of overlapping clinical symptoms (post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and anxiety).

Efficacy of a Therapist-Assisted Self-Help Internet-Based Intervention Targeting PTSD, Depression, and Insomnia Symptoms After a Disaster: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

This study aimed at evaluating the efficacy of an online CBT intervention with limited therapist contact targeting a range of posttraumatic symptoms among evacuees from the 2016 Fort McMurray wildfires. One hundred and thirty-six residents of Fort McMurray who reported either moderate PTSD symptoms (PCL-5 ≥ 23) or mild PTSD symptoms (PCL-5 ≥ 10) with moderate depression (PHQ-9 ≥ 10) or subthreshold insomnia symptoms (ISI ≥ 8) were randomized either to a treatment (n = 69) or a waitlist condition (n = 67). Participants were on average 45 years old, and mostly identified as White (82%) and as women (76%).

Weaning diet supplemented with health-promoting feed additives influences microbiota and immune response in piglets challenged with Salmonella.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of micronutrients and feed additives to modulate intestinal microbiota and systemic and mucosal immune responses in weaned pigs infected with Salmonella. At weaning, 32 litters of 12 piglets each were allocated to four dietary treatments: 1) control diet (CTRL), 2) CTRL supplemented with chlortetracycline (ATB), 3) CTRL supplemented with a cocktail of feed additives (CKTL); and 4) CKTL diet containing bovine colostrum in replacement of spray-dry animal plasma (CKTL+COL). The CKTL supplement included cranberry extract, encapsulated carvacrol and yeast-derived products and an enriched selenium and vitamin premix.

Background: Natural disasters happen in an increased frequency, and telemental health interventions could offer easily accessible help to reduce mental health symptoms experienced by survivors. Aims: Our qualitative case study aims to describe psychologists' experiences with an online, therapist-assisted blended intervention for survivors of the Fort McMurray wildfires in Alberta, Canada.

Patient Navigation Can Improve Breast Cancer Outcomes among African American Women in Chicago: Insights from a Modeling Study.

African American (AA) women experience much greater mortality due to breast cancer (BC) than non-Latino Whites (NLW). Clinical patient navigation is an evidence-based strategy used by healthcare institutions to improve AA women's breast cancer outcomes. While empirical research has demonstrated the potential effect of navigation interventions for individuals, the population-level impact of navigation on screening, diagnostic completion, and stage at diagnosis has not been assessed.

Little is known regarding longitudinal perspectives and evolutions of psychological distress within this population. The objective of this study is to extend the results of our previous study to the pandemic's second wave.

Healthcare Predictors of Information Dissemination About Genetic Risks.

Objectives: Despite the benefits of genetic counseling and testing (GCT), utilization is particularly low among African American (AA) women who exhibit breast cancer features that are common in BRCA-associated cancer. Underutilization is especially problematic for AA women who are more likely to die from breast cancer than women from any other race or ethnicity. Due to medical mistrust, fear, and stigma that can be associated with genetic services among racial/ethnic minorities, reliance on trusted social networks may be an impactful strategy to increase dissemination of knowledge about hereditary cancer risk.

Environmental scan of mental health supports across Canadian burn centers: A healthcare providers' perspective.

Background: Early mental health care and psychosocial support after burn injury provided by a variety of specialists and non-mental health professionals is instrumental in prevention of long-term mental health sequalae such as post-traumatic stress, depressive or substance use disorders. Diversity of mental health supports available to burn survivors vary across geography, resulting in variation of long-term mental health outcomes following burn injury.

Methods: A mixed-methods study utilizing a semi-structured questionnaire to explore resources available for burn survivors in Canada as an inpatient, outpatient, and more broadly in the aftercare community.

Background: Patient navigation is an increasingly widespread intervention to address the persistent, severe, and disproportionate breast cancer (BC) burden that African Americans (AA) face. Navigation may have more widespread effects than previously estimated due to patient-driven diffusion of BC information.

Methods: This pilot study examined the network effects of a randomized controlled trial via recruitment of navigated and non-navigated AA BC patients as well as their network members.

Riverscape approaches in practice: perspectives and applications.

Landscape perspectives in riverine ecology have been undertaken increasingly in the last 30 years, leading aquatic ecologists to develop a diverse set of approaches for conceptualizing, mapping and understanding 'riverscapes'. Spatiotemporally explicit perspectives of rivers and their biota nested within the socio-ecological landscape now provide guiding principles and approaches in inland fisheries and watershed management. During the last two decades, scientific literature on riverscapes has increased rapidly, indicating that the term and associated approaches are serving an important purpose in freshwater science and management.
