During a period of 16 months 1757 strains of nonfermentative gram-negative rods have been isolated from clinical material. Of the, 1205 (69%) were P. aeruginosa, 124 (10%) of which failed to produce pyocyanin.

Two ELISA test methods for detection of tetanus antibodies are presented which are suitable for routine screening. Administration of the tests to blood donors shows good average immunization of the Swiss population against tetanus. Due to compulsory immunization during military service, men exhibit markedly higher antibody levels against tetanus than women.

The antibiotic complex griseorubin has antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive as well as -negative bacteria, mycobacteria, mycoplasma and protozoa in vitro but it is not active against yeast and fungi. Tests with transplantable rodent tumors indicate that griseorubin is inhibitory to the growth of lymphatic leukemia L1210 in mice and Zajdela ascites hepatoma in rats. The acute LD50 of griseorubin in mice is 50 mg/kg of body weight when given intraperitoneally.

A new antibiotic complex has been obtained from the cultures of Streptomyces strain No. IMET 20978 isolated from the shrimp Crangon crangon L. On the basis of taxonomic studies the producing microorganism is described as Streptomyces fimicarius (Duché) Waksman et Henrici, 1948, type strain IMET 20978.

Rat and tupaia 41 degrees C temperature variant cell clones were derived from parental embryonic cells, cloned and established in tissue cultures. Both variant cell clones grew permanently at 41 degrees C. The morphology of these cell clones was altered in comparison to the original fibroblast cell clones.

By using the glyoxylic acid method of DE LA Torre and Surgeon (1976), occurrence, distribution and origin of catecholamines were investigated in the visual system of the albino rat. A dense network of green fluorescent terminals and preterminals could be detected in the dLGN. The spreading of terminals of catecholaminergic fibres had been observed in laminae I and II of the visual cortex.

By means of a lincomycin containing selective medium, gram-negative, oxidase-positive, non-motile, non-saccharolytic, penicillin-sensitive rods have been isolated from 24 of 165 healthy adults (13,9%). Three strains were lost, 7 strains were Moraxella osloensis (4,2%), 12 strains were Neisseria elongata (7,3%) and 2 strains were considered to be a subspecies of N. elongata (1.

Serogroup Y meningococci are more frequently respiratory pathogens than one might suppose from their prevalence in meningitis and septicemia. A case of a peracute fatal septicemia caused by group Y meningococci is reported here in which post mortem hemorrhagic lesions of the pharyngeal, laryngeal and tracheal mucosae as well as a beginning pneumonia and pleurisy have been found. The association of meningococcal and respiratory viral infections is discussed.

By means of a selective medium described for the isolation of Listeria monocytogenes (nalidixic acid - trypaflavin - serum agar) 18 strains of Ps. aeruginosa have been obtained from the feces of 344 healthy adults (5.2%).

About 60 characteristics have been investigated in 7 hemolyzing and 12 nonhemolyzing strains of L. monocytogenes. From these investigations resulted inter alia that the organism grows well under strictly anaerobic conditions, esculin is split at 45 degrees C,NH3 is produced from peptone, but not from arginin, and H2S can be traced by sufficiently sensitive methods.

Neisseria sicca forms an iodine-positive metabolic product when grown on Trypticase soy agar without the addition of sucrose. This reaction which does not occur with N. perflava may be useful for differentiating between the two species.

The feces of 318 healthy adults were examined for L. monocytogenes by means of the cold enrichment and of two different selective media (nalidixic acid-trypaflavin-serum agar; Braveny medium). 15 persons (4.
