The aims of this study were I) to compare the follicular diameter, corpus luteum diameter and serum progesterone (P4) concentrations in cows treated with conventional protocol injectable P4 protocol; II) to determine the serum P4 profile in ovariectomized heifers; and III) to compare pregnancy rate between protocols. In experiment I, multiparous cows received a protocol for ovulation synchronization with an intravaginal P4 device (n = 38; device + EB day 0; device removal + PGF2α + eCG + EC day 8) or injectable P4 (n = 38; injection + EB day 0; PGF2α + eCG + EC day 8). In experiment II, ovariectomized heifers (n = 8) were treated with injectable P4 and blood samples were collected to determine the serum P4 profile.

Lymph node involvement is considered to be one of the most important independent prognostic factors in breast cancer. In patients without palpable lymphadenopathies, the method of choice for determining this involvement is the sentinel lymph node biopsy. Tartaric instability of wines still represents a serious problem in terms of the commercial value of bottled wines, particularly whites, leading consumers to be suspicious as regards the effective healthiness or wholesomeness of products. The study, carried out on 536 Italian wines, investigated the potential of using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, distinguishing between white and red/rosé wines, to create models predicting the instability of wines, assessed in comparison to two of the most widespread methods of reference: the "mini-contact test" (10 min, 0 °C, KHT) and the "cooling test" (5 days, -4 °C). The models proposed, constructed using 80% of the samples and based on Partial Least Squares-Regression and Artificial Neural Networks, were shown to work well in terms of correct classification (from 89% to 97%) of the external validation subset (20%).

Photorefraction is a promising technique for screening infants for amblyopiogenic defects, but currently used instruments often produce images that are difficult to interpret due to inaccurate control of the subject's fixation, to the narrow range (+/- 4 D) of the measurable error, to ill-defined crescent borders, and to chromatic aberration. A charge-coupled device (CCD) camera with near-infrared sensitivity connected to a computer with an image grabber for real-time equalization was devised to overcome the aforementioned problems. This binocular videorefractoscope (VRB) enables a dynamic and nondissociating refractive status and an ocular motility testing.
