Community consultation in the pediatric intensive care unit for an exception from informed consent Trial: A survey of patient caregivers.

Aim: To explore perspectives of families in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) about an emergency interventional trial on peri-arrest bolus epinephrine for acute hypotension using Exception From Informed Consent (EFIC).

Methods: We performed face-to-face interviews with families whose children were hospitalized in the PICU. A research team member provided an educational presentation about the planned trial and administered a survey with open- and closed-ended items.

The effect of machine learning tools for evidence synthesis on resource use and time-to-completion: protocol for a retrospective pilot study.

Background: Machine learning (ML) tools exist that can reduce or replace human activities in repetitive or complex tasks. Yet, ML is underutilized within evidence synthesis, despite the steadily growing rate of primary study publication and the need to periodically update reviews to reflect new evidence. Underutilization may be partially explained by a paucity of evidence on how ML tools can reduce resource use and time-to-completion of reviews.

No effect of monetary reward in a visual working memory task.

Previous work has shown that humans distribute their visual working memory (VWM) resources flexibly across items: the higher the importance of an item, the better it is remembered. A related, but much less studied question is whether people also have control over the total amount of VWM resource allocated to a task. Here, we approach this question by testing whether increasing monetary incentives results in better overall VWM performance.

Primary graft dysfunction grade 3 following pediatric lung transplantation is associated with chronic lung allograft dysfunction.

Background: Severe primary graft dysfunction (PGD) is associated with the development of bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome (BOS), the most common form of chronic lung allograft dysfunction (CLAD), in adults. However, PGD associations with long-term outcomes following pediatric lung transplantation are unknown. We hypothesized that PGD grade 3 (PGD 3) at 48- or 72-hours would be associated with shorter CLAD-free survival following pediatric lung transplantation.

Pulmonary diffusing capacity to nitric oxide and carbon monoxide during exercise and in the supine position: a test-retest reliability study.

New Findings: What is the central question in this study? How reliable is the combined measurement of the pulmonary diffusing capacity to carbon monoxide and nitric oxide (D ) during exercise and in the resting supine position, respectively? What is the main finding and its importance? The D technique is reliable with a very low day-to-day variability both during exercise and in the resting supine position, and may thus provide a useful physiological outcome that reflects the alveolar-capillary reserve in humans.

Background: DeaFNess Autosomal dominant 9 (DFNA9) is a hereditary disorder known to affect both hearing and vestibular function in its carriers. Its phenotype is characterized by progressive sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) and vestibular dysfunction evolving towards bilateral vestibulopathy (BV) by the 3rd to 5th life decade. Recent studies have identified the impact of hearing loss and vestibular dysfunction on cognitive functioning.

Effect of remote patient monitoring for patients with chronic kidney disease who perform dialysis at home: a systematic review.

Objective: The purpose of the systematic review was to assess the effectiveness of remote patient monitoring (RPM) follow-up compared with standard care, for patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) who perform dialysis at home.

Methods: We conducted a systematic review in accordance with international guidelines. We performed systematic searches for publications from 2015 to 2021 in five databases (eg, Medline, Cinahl, Embase) and a search for grey literature in reference lists.

Association of internalised homonegativity with partner notification after diagnosis of syphilis or gonorrhoea among men having sex with men in 49 countries across four continents.

Background: Partner notification (PN) after a sexually transmitted infection (STI) diagnosis is being promoted as a means to interrupt transmission chains. We investigated whether Internalised Homonegativity (IH) is associated with PN among men having sex with men (MSM).

Methods: PN, defined as notifying at least one partner after diagnosis of syphilis and gonorrhoea, was queried in two internet-based self-completion surveys conducted between Oct 2017 and May 2018 in 68 countries in Europe, Latin America, Canada, and the Philippines.

Regional surveillance of medically-attended farm-related injuries in children and adolescents.

Purpose: Due to numerous environmental hazards such as heavy machinery and large livestock, youth who live and work on farms are at high risk of injury, disability, and death. This study described a regional surveillance system for monitoring farm-related injuries in children and adolescents. As the risk of farm-related injuries are not exclusive to farm residents, trends in farm-related injuries over the previous 5 years were reported and compared between children/adolescents who did and did not live on farms in north-central Wisconsin.

Chemical Proteomics Reveals Antibiotic Targets of Oxadiazolones in MRSA.

Phenotypic screening is a powerful approach to identify novel antibiotics, but elucidation of the targets responsible for the antimicrobial activity is often challenging in the case of compounds with a polypharmacological mode of action. Here, we show that activity-based protein profiling maps the target interaction landscape of a series of 1,3,4-oxadiazole-3-ones identified in a phenotypic screen to have high antibacterial potency against multidrug-resistant . In situ competitive and comparative chemical proteomics with a tailor-made activity-based probe, in combination with transposon and resistance studies, revealed several cysteine and serine hydrolases as relevant targets.

Regulation of cell size and Wee1 kinase by elevated levels of the cell cycle regulatory protein kinase Cdr2.

Many cell cycle regulatory proteins catalyze cell cycle progression in a concentration-dependent manner. In the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe, the protein kinase Cdr2 promotes mitotic entry by organizing cortical oligomeric nodes that lead to inhibition of Wee1, which itself inhibits the cyclin-dependent kinase Cdk1. cdr2Δ cells lack nodes and divide at increased size due to overactive Wee1, but it has not been known how increased Cdr2 levels might impact Wee1 and cell size.

First-time parents' experiences related to parental self-efficacy: A scoping review.

Becoming a parent for the first time is a major transition, and parental self-efficacy (PSE) is considered an important predictor of parenting functioning. We aimed to describe and synthesize qualitative studies that explore first-time parents' experiences related to PSE in the transition to parenthood in the first-year postpartum. We conducted a scoping review in accordance with international guidelines.

Diastolic Blood Pressure Threshold During Pediatric Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Survival Outcomes: A Multicenter Validation Study.

Objectives: Arterial diastolic blood pressure (DBP) greater than 25 mm Hg in infants and greater than 30 mm Hg in children greater than 1 year old during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was associated with survival to hospital discharge in one prospective study. We sought to validate these potential hemodynamic targets in a larger multicenter cohort.

Organisms use several strategies to mitigate mitochondrial stress, including the activation of the mitochondrial unfolded protein response (UPR). The UPR in Caenorhabditis elegans, regulated by the transcription factor ATFS-1, expands on this recovery program by inducing an antimicrobial response against pathogens that target mitochondrial function. Here, we show that the mammalian ortholog of ATFS-1, ATF5, protects the host during infection with enteric pathogens but, unexpectedly, by maintaining the integrity of the intestinal barrier.

Starting Home Telemonitoring and Oxygen Therapy Directly after Emergency Department Assessment Appears to Be Safe in COVID-19 Patients.

Background: Since data on the safety and effectiveness of home telemonitoring and oxygen therapy started directly after Emergency Department (ED) assessment in COVID-19 patients are sparse but could have many advantages, we evaluated these parameters in this study.

Methods: All COVID-19 patients ≥18 years eligible for receiving home telemonitoring (November 2020-February 2022, Albert Schweitzer hospital, the Netherlands) were included: patients started directly after ED assessment (ED group) or after hospital admission (admission group). Safety (number of ED reassessments and hospital readmissions) and effectiveness (number of phone calls, duration of oxygen usage and home telemonitoring) were described in both groups.

Extending the dynamic temperature range of Boltzmann thermometers.

Lanthanide-doped (nano)crystals are an important class of materials in luminescence thermometry. The working mechanism of these thermometers is diverse but most often relies on variation of the ratio of emission intensities from two thermally coupled excited states with temperature. At low temperatures, nonradiative coupling between the states can be slow compared to radiative decay, but, at higher temperatures, the two states reach thermal equilibrium due to faster nonradiative coupling.

Effectiveness of adding motivational interviewing or a stratified vocational advice intervention to usual case management on return to work for people with musculoskeletal disorders: the MI-NAV randomised controlled trial.

Objectives: To evaluate if adding motivational interviewing (MI) or a stratified vocational advice intervention (SVAI) to usual case management (UC), reduced sickness absence over 6 months for workers on sick leave due to musculoskeletal disorders.

Methods: We conducted a three-arm parallel pragmatic randomised controlled trial including 514 employed workers (57% women, median age 49 (range 24-66)), on sick leave for at least 50% of their contracted work hours for ≥7 weeks. All participants received UC.

"They make a difference": a qualitative study of providers' experiences of peer support in outpatient clinics for people living with HIV.

Background: Although the life expectancy of people living with HIV has increased, they are still often disconnected from society through stigma and discrimination. Peer support has been found to increase social support. Given the limited research on peer support from the providers' perspective, this study explored how peer supporters experience their roles and contributions in outpatient clinics (OPCs).

Bundle geodesic convolutional neural network for diffusion-weighted imaging segmentation.

Purpose: Applying machine learning techniques to magnetic resonance diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) data is challenging due to the size of individual data samples and the lack of labeled data. It is possible, though, to learn general patterns from a very limited amount of training data if we take advantage of the geometry of the DWI data. Therefore, we present a tissue classifier based on a Riemannian deep learning framework for single-shell DWI data.

Alternate day fasting on subjective feelings of appetite and body weight for adults with overweight or obesity: a systematic review.

Alternate day fasting (ADF) with consumption of calories up to 25 % of the daily energy intake on fast days is one of the most used intermittent fasting regimens and promoted as a promising, alternative approach for treating obesity. Feelings of appetite are critical for adherence to dietary approaches, and therefore the success of dietary interventions. This systematic review aimed to assess the effects of a minimum of 8 weeks of ADF on subjective feelings of appetite and body weight for adults with overweight and obesity.
