Endometriosis presents a pro-inflammatory microenvironment influenced by cytokines, such as interleukin (IL)-8, which expression may be influenced by genetic polymorphisms. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the role of interleukin (IL)-8 rs4073 polymorphism in endometriosis' development and its related symptoms. A case-control study was conducted with 207 women with endometriosis and 193 healthy controls.

Polymorphisms can influence mRNAs stability and genes expression, and hence affect the binding of miRNAs. Thus, the present study evaluated the association of DROSHA and DICER1 polymorphisms in the development of endometriosis and other diseases.

Objective: To investigate the contribution of CYP2C19 polymorphisms and body mass index (BMI) in the development of endometriosis.
Study Design: This is a case-control study that includes 356 women (187 cases and 169 controls) recruited from two hospitals in the Brazilian public health system. The genotyping analyses of the CYP2C19*2 and CYP2C19*17 polymorphisms were performed using TaqMan allelic discrimination assays, and the association of the studied polymorphisms with endometriosis was evaluated by multivariate logistic regression.
To evaluate the magnitude of the association of the polymorphisms of the genes and in the development of endometriosis. This is a retrospective case-control study involving 161 women with endometriosis (cases) and 179 controls. The polymorphisms were genotyped by real-time polymerase chain reaction using the TaqMan system.

We hypothesize that single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in VEGF and VEGFR2 genes may influence the onset and/or the progression of endometriosis. The main aim of this study was to investigate the contribution of VEGF and VEGFR2 SNPs as risk factors for endometriosis, as well as their association with endometriosis symptoms.

Background: Endometriosis is regarded as a complex and heterogeneous disease in which genetic and environmental factors contribute to the phenotype. The Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) plays important roles in the pathogenesis of endometriosis. The present study was aimed at investigating the contribution of VEGF polymorphisms as risk factors for the development of endometriosis.

To evaluate factors associated with an undetectable VL near delivery in HIV-infected pregnant women receiving highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) and non-HAART regimens, HIV-infected pregnant women with a detectable VL at entry and having used antiretrovirals for ≥4 weeks before delivery were selected. Multivariate analysis was employed using binary logistic unconditional models; the dependent variable was having a VL <400 copies/mL near delivery.

This disease has been associated to development of different types of malignancies; therefore new blood vessels are essential for the survival of the endometrial implant. Our previous observations on humans showed that angiogenesis is predominantly found in rectosigmoid endometriosis, a deeply infiltrating disease.

Design: Pharmacologic interventions in an experimental model of peritoneal endometriosis.
Setting: Research laboratory in the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.
The composition of sulfated glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) and the tissue distribution of chondroitin sulfate (CS) were analyzed in deeply infiltrating endometriosis (DIE) of rectosigmoid, using metachromatic staining, and biochemical analysis employing electrophoresis before and after specific enzymatic or chemical degradations, and immunostaining with an antibody against CS. The sulfated GAGs were characterized as dermatan sulfate (DS), heparan sulfate (HS) and CS; and DS strongly predominated compared to HS and CS. Immunostaining procedures showed that CS was concentrated in the endometriosis foci, distributed throughout the stroma around the glands.

Objective: To analyze vascular density and immunolocalization of angiogenic vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and its receptor Flk-1 in the proliferative and secretory eutopic human endometrium and in three different sites of endometriosis: the ovary, bladder, and rectum.
Design: Prospective study.
Setting: University hospital.
Sulfated glycosaminoglycan (GAG) composition was characterized in the human endometrium during proliferative and secretory phases of the menstrual cycle. Sulfated GAGs were analyzed in endometrium tissue using metachromatic staining, biochemical analysis including electrophoresis before and after specific enzymatic or chemical degradations, and immunostaining with an antibody against chondroitin sulfate (CS). Our results showed that CS was the main sulfated GAG species detected, accompanied by small amounts of heparan sulfate and dermatan sulfate.

Patient positioning as it relates to obtaining full-length lower extremity radiograph views are discussed along with contralateral radiographs, which are useful and important for comparative purposes.

Hourly injections of 1 or 5 micrograms AVP from 1200 to 1700 hr on proestrus prevented increases in plasma PRL levels that afternoon. However, following cessation of AVP treatment, a marked increase in PRL levels occurred between 1830 and 2030 hr.

A particular pion patient is followed through the entire planning and treatment sequence to describe CT scanning procedures, bolus and collimator and treatment techniques developed to minimize positioning errors (less than 5 mm). Comparison of 2-D and 3-D isodose calculations developed at Los Alamos showed differences of less than 10% attributable to multiple scattering effects and the computational models used.

To obtain best value for funds expended it is desirable to compare CT scanner mechanical characteristics, data quality, and data handling capabilities. Specifications can be written to ensure prompt delivery of a unit containing all essential features without adding to the cost or complexity of the unit.
