Background: We assessed the efficacy of a high-molecular-weight hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (K8515) as a cholesterol-lowering agent, the dose-response profile of its action, and the ability of adult subjects to tolerate its ingestion at effective doses.

Methods: These studies were conducted at the Clinical Research Center of The University of Michigan Hospitals, Ann Arbor. Efficacy was assessed in 10 normal and 12 mildly hyperlipidemic subjects in double-blind, randomized crossover trials of 1 and 2 weeks' duration, respectively.

Peptic ulcers can develop when there is an imbalance between gastric acid secretion and gastroduodenal mucosal defense. Investigators are looking at the role of Helicobacter pylori in the development of peptic ulcer disease; eradication of the microorganism may reduce recurrence. Approved drug therapy includes H2-receptor antagonists, omeprazole, sucralfate, and antacids.

This study consists of 71 consecutive surgically resected specimens of lung cancer which were submitted for both light and electron microscopic studies. Eleven of the 71 cancers found in the resected specimens and originally diagnosed by light microscopy had to be reclassified when studied by electron microscopy. All of the reclassified cancers were either poorly differentiated or undifferentiated tumors.

Article Synopsis
  • The study assessed how R(-)- and S(+)-ibuprofen bind to plasma proteins and interact with each other in 12 healthy participants.
  • Subjects received various combinations of ibuprofen and researchers measured the binding using advanced lab techniques.
  • Results showed that both enantiomers bind to proteins highly (over 99%), but R(-)-ibuprofen had a stronger intrinsic binding compared to S(+)-ibuprofen, influencing their competitive interactions and availability in the bloodstream.

Gastric and duodenal pH levels were measured in 79 healthy, elderly men and women (mean +/- SD = 71 +/- 5 years) under both fasted and fed conditions using the Heidelberg capsule technique. The pH was recorded for 1 hr in the fasted state, a standard liquid and solid meal of 1000 cal was given over 30 min, then the pH was measured for 4 hr postprandially. Results are given as medians and interquartile ranges: fasted gastric pH, 1.

A retrospective study has been carried out on 897 psoriatic patients in order to verify the incidence and radiological patterns of psoriatic arthropathy (PA). Site of involved joints, appearance and degree of involvement were correlated with extent of skin disease and blood test results. Sixty-five patients (7%) showed "clinical" arthritis whereas only 20 cases (2.

The oral absorption of flurbiprofen, an antiinflammatory nonsteroidal compound, was compared in the fasted vs the fed state. When ingested as an aqueous solution of the sodium salt, absorption kinetics followed a monoexponential pattern in half of the subjects and a bimodal pattern with a lag time before the onset of the second phase of absorption in the other half of the subjects. When ingested in the free acid form as a tablet either with water (fasted state) or with water 15 min after 330 ml of apple juice (fed state), flurbiprofen absorption was always bimodal, and the lag time before the onset of the second phase was shown to be dependent on the gastric emptying time (r = 0.

Primary lymphoma of the spleen is a relatively rare clinical entity. The majority of patients reported with this entity not only have splenic involvement but also have had lymph node and/or liver involvement. The patient reported presented with splenomegaly and was otherwise asymptomatic.

Five cases with different abnormalities of chromosome 18 are described: one case with trisomy 18, two cases with ring 18, one case with partial trisomy 18q and one case with a mosaic 18p-/iso 18q. The karyotypes of the parents were normal. Cytogenetic analysis was performed on PHA stimulated blood lymphocytes.

We report our observations about familial segregations of chromosomal aberrations: the simple forms and complex rearrangements. Congenital malformations and mental retardation, can be present both in unbalanced and in balanced translocations. Various hypotheses have been proposed to explain this phenomenon: in particular a possible "position effect" or genic mutation or genomic imprinting.

Pericentric inversion of chromosome 9 is one of the most common structural balanced chromosomal aberrations. It is considered as a paraphysiological variant of a normal karyotype and it is possible to find it as occasional report in healthy subjects. In the last ten years different signals have appeared in literature, concerning carriers of pericentric inversion of chromosome 9, who showed different anomalies of the clinical condition.

The extent to which oral glutamic acid hydrochloride decreases mean gastric pH in fasting persons with and without simulated hypochlorhydria was studied. Healthy nonsmoking men were randomly assigned to one of two drug regimens followed by the other regimen after a one-week washout period. In regimen 1 the fasting subjects received two 680-mg doses of glutamic acid hydrochloride given 10 minutes apart.

In 20 cases of Turner's syndrome (10 with complete X monosomy, 10 with partial X monosomy or mosaicism) aged 3.47 to 15.5 years, the stature of the individual cases and their parents were evaluated.

Turner's syndrome was originally reported as sexual infantilism, short stature, webbed neck and cubitus valgus. Subsequent investigations, however, have disclosed many other abnormalities both in chromosomal and physical features occurring in this syndrome. An increased prevalence of Hashimoto's thyroiditis in patients with Turner's syndrome has been well documented and molecular defects of the TBG have been described.

Nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome is a relatively uncommon clinical entity. It is essentially characterized by the early onset of multiple basal cell carcinomas of the skin generally above wrist-line level, by the presence of jaw cysts, musculoskeletal and other anomalies. Metastatic disease secondary to ordinary basal cell carcinoma is indeed rare.

A program in which pharmacists were authorized to change parenteral histamine H2-receptor antagonist (H2RA) therapy to the oral route without first contacting the prescriber was evaluated on cost and appropriateness of use of the parenteral route. Parenteral therapy was received by 264 and 244 patients in the study and comparison groups, respectively. Length of parenteral H2RA therapy was less in the study group (4.

The pH in the upper gastrointestinal tract of young, healthy men and women was measured in the fasting state and after administration of a standard solid and liquid meal. Calibrated Heidelberg capsules were used to record the pH continuously over the study period of approximately 6 hr. In the fasted state, the median gastric pH was 1.

The interaction of ibuprofen with home tests for occult blood was evaluated, and the accuracy of these tests was determined by validating the results with a specific quantitative assay of stool blood. Three home occult blood tests were evaluated: Early Detector, Fleet Detecatest, and CS-T Coloscreen Self Test. Fourteen men 19 to 35 years of age were instructed on how to use the tests and to record each day their dietary intake and stool consistency, the color of test control areas, the results, and the times of ibuprofen administration.

Goblet cell carcinoid of the appendix is a relatively uncommon clinical condition. Although its histogenesis remains controversial, its histological characteristics are distinctive enough not to pose a serious problem for diagnosis. The clinical behaviour of the tumor appears to lie between the typical behaviour of an ordinary carcinoid and that of a well differentiated adenocarcinoma of the appendix.

The gastroduodenal mucosal damage caused by aspirin and nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs is a common clinical problem. We compared two medications designed to diminish mucosal damage: enteric-coated aspirin and salicylsalicylic acid (salsalate). Ten healthy volunteers were randomized to receive either 1.
