Article Synopsis
  • * An analysis of 610 mPC patients revealed that those who had palliative care consultations were significantly less likely to undergo chemotherapy close to death, more likely to have do-not-resuscitate (DNR) orders, and more often referred to hospice care.
  • * Despite these differences in care approach, there was no significant change in overall survival rates for patients who received palliative care compared to those who didn’t, indicating that integrating palliative care mainly affects the quality of care at the end

Background And Aims: Liver transplant (LT) for transplant oncology (TO) indications is being slowly adopted worldwide and has been recommended to be incorporated cautiously due to concerns about mid-long-term survival and its impact on the waiting list.

Approach And Results: We conducted 4 systematic reviews of all series on TO indications (intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma and perihilar cholangiocarcinoma [phCC]) and liver metastases from neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) and colorectal cancer (CRLM) and compared them using patient-level meta-analyses to data obtained from the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) database considering conventional daily-practice indications. Secondary analyses were done for specific selection criteria (Mayo-like protocols for phCC, SECA-2 for CRLM, and Milan criteria for NET).

Obesity is a chronic disease associated with increased morbidity and mortality and reduced quality of life. Pharmacotherapy can be associated with life style changes in increasing and maintaining weight loss and ameliorating obesity-related complications and comorbidities. In patients affected by obesity and uncontrolled obesity-associated complications or high degrees of BMI (> 40 Kg/m), metabolic bariatric surgery can be a valid therapeutic option.

Article Synopsis
  • - Robotic surgery is gaining popularity in the surgical field, especially for liver resections, but its effectiveness near major blood vessels needs further investigation.
  • - A study of 1030 patients categorized them into two groups (lesions in contact with major vessels vs. those free from) to compare surgical outcomes before and after adjusting for other variables.
  • - Findings indicated that while the Pringle Manoeuvre was more frequently used in surgeries near major vessels, overall operative time, complication rates, and surgery success were similar between both groups, suggesting robotic surgery is safe even for challenging cases.

Despite initial high response rates to first-line EGFR TKI, all non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) with EGFR-activating mutation will ultimately develop resistance to treatment. Identification of resistance mechanisms is critical to adapt treatment and improve patient outcomes. Here, we show that a transcript that encodes full-length catalytic subunit 2B of calcineurin accumulates in EGFR-mutant NSCLC cells with acquired resistance against different EGFR TKIs and in post-progression biopsies of NSCLC patients treated with EGFR TKIs.

Background: The current standard treatment for intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) involves complete liver resection with negative surgical margins and lymphadenectomy, followed by adjuvant chemotherapy. Debate is ongoing regarding the necessity of systematic anatomic resection (AR). This study aimed to summarize existing literature to determine whether AR leads to better oncologic outcomes than non-AR for patients with resectable ICC.

Patients with nonresectable breast cancer liver metastasis (BCLM) face a dismal prognosis. Despite liver transplantation (LT) for metastatic liver tumors having recently shown good results, BCLM represents an absolute contraindication. This study aimed to investigate the potential for long-term survival after LT for BCLMs in a patient experiencing end-stage liver disease, following multiple oncologic treatments.

Article Synopsis
  • Metabolic syndrome (MS) is linked to hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), prompting a study on the long-term outcomes of liver resections in MS patients.
  • Data from 813 patients over 20 years showed a median overall survival of 81.4 months, with a recurrence rate of 48.3%, often peaking at 6 and 24 months post-surgery.
  • The study concluded that while patients have favorable long-term outcomes, the timing and nature of recurrences—linked to tumor features and cirrhosis—play a crucial role in survival, highlighting the need for careful post-operative monitoring.

Background: Most lung cancers are diagnosed at an advanced stage and therefore have a poor prognosis. One major challenge is to choose the most adapted sampling technique to obtain a rapid pathological diagnosis so as to start treatment as early as possible. A growing number of techniques have been developed in recent years.

Introduction: Physical activity is commonly used for both measuring and treating dysfunction. While preclinical work has been historically biased towards males, the use of both male and female animals is gaining popularity after multiple NIH initiatives. With increasing inclusion of both sexes, it has become imperative to determine sex differences in common behavioral assays.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the effects of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) on pain thresholds in women with fibromyalgia, finding that TENS can effectively reduce pain.
  • Participants were assigned to either active TENS, placebo TENS, or no TENS for 4 weeks, with the active group showing no significant changes in pressure pain thresholds or conditioned pain modulation after treatment.
  • However, those reporting significant improvements in movement-evoked pain experienced increased pressure pain thresholds, suggesting that while TENS is beneficial, it doesn't necessarily correlate with self-reported pain relief, and conditioned pain modulation may not be a reliable measure of treatment response.

Polyphosphates (PPs) constitute a class of food additives widely used due to their ability to exercise different useful activities. The food safety concern about the use of PPs in food is both the possible non-declared addition and some health effects, such as bile duct stones, decrease in oligo-element absorption, and allergic reactions in susceptible people. In this study, an analytical method based on ion chromatography with conductivity detection was applied for the detection and quantification of PPs in 238 samples of animal-derived products such as meat, dairy, and fish products.
