Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children: A review.

Aim: To comprehensively review the literature on multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C).

Methods: Narrative review of relevant studies published between April 2020 and January 2024.

Results: MIS-C is a SARS-CoV-2-related hyperinflammatory syndrome developing 2-6 weeks after COVID-19 in genetically susceptible individuals.

Lupus Nephritis in Children: Novel Perspectives.

Childhood-onset systemic lupus erythematosus is an inflammatory and autoimmune condition characterized by heterogeneous multisystem involvement and a chronic course with unpredictable flares. Kidney involvement, commonly called lupus nephritis, mainly presents with immune complex-mediated glomerulonephritis and is more frequent and severe in adults. Despite a considerable improvement in long-term renal prognosis, children and adolescents with lupus nephritis still experience significant morbidity and mortality.

Vascular and autonomic function as early predictive biomarkers of the progression to gestational hypertension.

Background: The changes in endothelial function, arterial stiffness, and heart rate variability (HRV) produced in the first trimester of pregnancy in women who develop gestational hypertension (GH) are still being investigated. Objective: to evaluate the HVR, endothelial function, and arterial stiffness changes during the first trimester of pregnancy and their relationship with the development of GH.

Methods: A group of women normotensive during the first trimester (n = 43), who later did (GH; n = 11) or did not (no-GH; n = 32) develop GH in that pregnancy, were enrolled.

Children referring to three Italian tertiary pediatric centers between February 2020 and November 2021 with a diagnosis of MIS-C, who underwent CMR during a follow-up visit, were enrolled. A Pragmatic Approach to Assessment of Chronic and Recurrent Pain in Children with Severe Neurologic Impairment.

The term "severe neurologic impairment" (SNI) is used to describe a group of disorders of the central nervous system which arise in childhood, resulting in motor impairment, cognitive impairment and medical complexity. As a result, much assistance is required with activities of daily living. Since these patients are often unable to self-report pain, or they may exhibit uncommon behaviors when suffering, pain manifestations may go unrecognized.

Severe onset of inflammatory myositis in a child: think to paraneoplastic myositis.

Background: Juvenile idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (JIIMs) are a group of heterogenous, acquired, autoimmune disorders that affect the muscle. While the association between IIMs and malignancy has been widely reported in adults, cancer-associated myositis (CAM) is rare in children, so that routine malignancy screening is not generally performed. The plastochron, the time interval between the formation of two successive leaves, is an important determinant of plant architecture. We genetically and phenotypically investigated many-noded dwarf (mnd) mutants in barley. The mnd mutants exhibited a shortened plastochron and a decreased leaf blade length, and resembled previously reported plastochron1 (pla1), pla2, and pla3 mutants in rice.

We report an implemented molecular-typing-method based on HRMA to detect SNPs within MLST loci, characterizing 100 clinical MRSA and 11 control strains, representative of Italian clones. The results provide solid evidence that HRMT could be a fast, cost-effective and reliable alternative to MLST, for MRSA molecular epidemiology.
