Background: COVID-19 may result in persistent symptoms in the post-acute phase, including cognitive and neurological ones. The aim of this study is to investigate the cognitive and neurological features of patients with a confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19 evaluated in the post-acute phase through a direct neuropsychological evaluation.

Methods: Individuals recovering from COVID-19 were assessed in an out-patient practice with a complete neurological evaluation and neuropsychological tests (Mini-Mental State Examination; Rey Auditory Verbal Test, Multiple Feature Target Cancellation Test, Trial Making Test, Digit Span Forward and Backward, and Frontal Assessment Battery).

Article Synopsis
  • The study looked at two types of brain bleeding: one from problems with blood vessels (aSAH) and one that wasn't, called spontaneous non-aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (smSAH), to see how they affect inflammation in the body.
  • Researchers observed 48 patients and collected blood samples over several days to learn about their immune responses.
  • The results showed important differences in inflammation markers on the first day, suggesting that understanding these immune reactions might help in treating patients better in the future.

The problem of nowcasting extreme weather events can be addressed by applying either numerical methods for the solution of dynamic model equations or data-driven artificial intelligence algorithms. Within this latter framework, the most used techniques rely on video prediction deep learning methods which take in input time series of radar reflectivity images to predict the next future sequence of reflectivity images, from which the predicted rainfall quantities are extrapolated. Differently from the previous works, the present paper proposes a deep learning method, exploiting videos of radar reflectivity frames as input and lightning data to realize a warning machine able to sound timely alarms of possible severe thunderstorm events.

Coronavirus disease 2019 is known to impact older people more severely and to cause persistent symptoms during the recovery phase, including cognitive and neurologic ones. We investigated the cognitive and neurologic features of 100 elderly patients with confirmed diagnosis of coronavirus disease 2019 evaluated in the postacute phase through a direct neuropsychological evaluation consisting on Mini Mental State Examination and 8 neuropsychological tests. Overall, a total of 33 participants were found to perform at a level considered to be pathologic; more specifically, 33%, 23%, and 20% failed on Trial Making, Digit Span Backwards, and Frontal Evaluation Battery tests, respectively.

Forecast verification is a crucial task for assessing the predictive power of prognostic model forecasts and it is usually implemented by checking quality-based skill scores. In this article, we propose a novel approach to realize forecast verification focusing not just on the forecast quality but rather on its value. Specifically, we introduce a strategy for assessing the severity of forecast errors based on the evidence that, on the one hand, a false alarm just anticipating an occurring event is better than one in the middle of consecutive nonoccurring events, and that, on the other hand, a miss of an isolated event has a worse impact than a miss of a single event, which is part of several consecutive occurrences.

A 6-year-old girl with visual impairment in the right eye (OD) was referred for an eye evaluation. The fundus of the OD showed a fibrotic orange endophytic lesion located adjacent to the optic disc. In retinal optical coherence tomography, a local tractional retinal detachment and choroidal neovascular membrane were observed together also with the presence of subretinal fluid.

An 8-year-old boy presented with fever, vomits, bloody diarrhoea, and blurred vision. The patient was diagnosed with Haemolytic Uraemic Syndrome (HUS) due to the symptoms and a positive Verotoxin stool test. Funduscopic examination showed retinal involvement in both eyes, peri-papillary paleness, retinal haemorrhages, and soft "Purtscher Fleckens" exudates.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most deadly and commonly diagnosed tumors worldwide. Several genes are involved in its development and progression. The most frequent mutations concern APC, KRAS, SMAD4, and TP53 genes, suggesting that CRC relies on the concomitant alteration of the related pathways.

Recently, one of the hottest topics in the logistics sector has been the traceability of goods and the monitoring of their condition during transportation. Perishable goods, such as fresh goods, have specifically attracted attention of the researchers that have already proposed different solutions to guarantee quality and freshness of food through the whole cold chain. In this regard, the use of Internet of Things (IoT)-enabling technologies and its specific branch called edge computing is bringing different enhancements thereby achieving easy remote and real-time monitoring of transported goods.

Vasospasm is a severe complication in patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) and cannot be reliably predicted. Its pathophysiology remains elusive with the current body of evidence suggesting inflammation as one of the main driving forces. We here aimed to analyze circulating immune cell subsets over time in patients with aSAH with or without vasospasm.

Introduction: As an emerging infectious disease, the clinical and virologic course of COVID-19 requires better investigation. The aim of this study is to identify the potential risk factors associated with persistent positive nasopharyngeal swab real-time reverse transcription‒polymerase chain reaction tests in a large sample of patients who recovered from COVID-19.

Methods: After the acute phase of SARS-CoV-2 epidemic infection, the Fondazione Policlinico A.

Article Synopsis
  • In East Asia, face masks have been widely accepted as a method to reduce viral spread, while their use has faced stigma in Europe and North America, a view that's changed during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • A study involving four male COVID-19 patients examined the effectiveness of surgical masks, where two wore masks for 5 hours while the others did not.
  • Results showed that the environment around patients without masks was contaminated with SARS-CoV-2, while the area around masked patients tested negative, supporting masks as a cost-effective tool to reduce viral transmission.

On February 20, 2020, a man living in the north of Italy was admitted to the emergency room with an atypical pneumonia that later proved to be COVID-19. This was the trigger of one of the most serious clusters of COVID-19 in the world, outside of China. Despite aggressive restraint and inhibition efforts, COVID-19 continues to increase, and the total number of infected patients in Italy is growing daily.

Objective: To study the immunomodulatory effect of teriflunomide on innate and adaptive immune cell populations through a pilot, open-label, observational study in a cohort of patients with relapsing-remitting MS.

Methods: Blood lymphocytes were isolated from 10 patients with MS before and after 3 or 12 months of treatment. Adaptive and innate immune cell subsets were analyzed by flow cytometry as follows: B cells (memory, regulatory, and mature subsets), T cells (effector and regulatory subsets), and natural killer (NK) cells (CD56 and CD56 subsets).

Introduction: Systemic delivery of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) seems to be of benefit in the treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS), an autoimmune disease of the central nervous system (CNS) sustained by migration of T cells across the brain blood barrier (BBB) and subsequent induction of inflammatory lesions into CNS. MSC have been found to modulate several effector functions of T cells. In this study, we investigated the effects of MSC on adhesion molecules and receptors on T cell surface that sustain their transendothelial migration.

This paper introduces a novel compartmental model describing the excretion of 18F-fluoro-deoxyglucose (FDG) in the renal system and a numerical method based on the maximum likelihood for its reduction. This approach accounts for variations in FDG concentration due to water re-absorption in renal tubules and the increase of the bladder's volume during the FDG excretion process. From the computational viewpoint, the reconstruction of the tracer kinetic parameters is obtained by solving the maximum likelihood problem iteratively, using a non-stationary, steepest descent approach that explicitly accounts for the Poisson nature of nuclear medicine data.
