Multi-stage semi-supervised learning enhances white matter hyperintensity segmentation.

Introduction: White matter hyperintensities (WMHs) are frequently observed on magnetic resonance (MR) images in older adults, commonly appearing as areas of high signal intensity on fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) MR scans. Elevated WMH volumes are associated with a greater risk of dementia and stroke, even after accounting for vascular risk factors. Manual segmentation, while considered the ground truth, is both labor-intensive and time-consuming, limiting the generation of annotated WMH datasets.

Solar Light CO Photoreduction Enhancement by Mononuclear Rhenium(I) Complexes: Characterization and Mechanistic Insights.

The catalytic efficacy of a novel mononuclear rhenium(I) complex in CO reduction is remarkable, with a turnover number (TON) of 1517 in 3 h, significantly outperforming previous Re(I) catalysts. This complex, synthesized via a substitution reaction on an aromatic ring to form a bromo-bipyridine derivative, = 2-bromo-6-(1-pyrazol-1-yl)pyridine, and further reacting with [Re(CO)Cl], results in the facial-tricarbonyl complex [ReL1(CO)Cl] (). The light green solid was obtained with an 80% yield and thoroughly characterized using cyclic voltammetry, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy.

Deep learning for detecting prenatal alcohol exposure in pediatric brain MRI: a transfer learning approach with explainability insights.

Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) refers to the exposure of the developing fetus due to alcohol consumption during pregnancy and can have life-long consequences for learning, behavior, and health. Understanding the impact of PAE on the developing brain manifests challenges due to its complex structural and functional attributes, which can be addressed by leveraging machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) approaches. While most ML and DL models have been tailored for adult-centric problems, this work focuses on applying DL to detect PAE in the pediatric population.

Characterisation of 3D-printable thermoplastics to be used as tissue-equivalent materials in photon and proton beam radiotherapy end-to-end quality assurance devices.

To investigate the potential of 3D-printable thermoplastics as tissue-equivalent materials to be used in multimodal radiotherapy end-to-end quality assurance (QA) devices.Six thermoplastics were investigated: Polylactic Acid (PLA), Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS), Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol (PETG), Polymethyl Methacrylate (PMMA), High Impact Polystyrene (HIPS) and StoneFil. Measurements of mass density (ρ), Relative Electron Density (RED), in a nominal 6 MV photon beam, and Relative Stopping Power (RSP), in a 210 MeV proton pencil-beam, were performed.

Real‑world retrospective study of early‑stage prostate cancer at a Portuguese Comprehensive Cancer Centre: The PEarlC study.

Despite the high prevalence of localised prostate cancer (LPC) and locally advanced prostate cancer (LAPC), evidence on the characteristics of patients, treatments and clinical outcomes stratified by disease risk is limited. The PEarlC study was conducted to characterise a cohort of patients with early-stage prostate cancer that included real-world clinical outcomes. Retrospective data from a cohort of patients diagnosed with LPC/LAPC between 2015 and 2017 and followed up until December 2020 at a Portuguese comprehensive cancer centre (IPO Porto) was analysed.

The contribution of second primary cancers to the mortality of patients with a first primary breast cancer.

Purpose: Second primary cancers (SPCs) are estimated to affect nearly 5% of patients with breast cancer within 10 years of their diagnosis. This study aimed to estimate the contribution of SPCs to the mortality of patients with a breast first primary cancer (FPC).

Methods: A population-based cohort of 17,210 patients with a breast FPC diagnosed between 2000 and 2010 was followed for SPCs (31/12/2015) and vital status (30/06/2021).

The role of intermolecular interactions in [Fe(X-salEen)]ClO spin crossover complexes.

Two new spin crossover (SCO) Fe(III) compounds were prepared, their structures were analysed and their magnetic properties were investigated. An exhaustive analysis of the effects of halogen substitution and aromatic ring functionalisation on the magnetic properties of non-solvated Fe(III) perchlorate complexes has been performed. Through comparative analysis, different magnetic profiles were found for the compounds studied, namely F (1), Cl (2), H (3), Br (4a, 4b), and I (5).

Molecular characterization of cetacean poxviruses along the coast of mainland Portugal.

Cetacean poxvirus (CePV) is the causative agent of tattoo skin disease (TSD) in dolphins, porpoises and whales, a condition characterized by pinhole, ring-like lesions or generalized tattoo-like skin lesions. This study genetically characterized cetacean poxviruses from stranded animals along mainland Portugal. Samples from skin lesions compatible with TSD were obtained from 4 odontocete species (Delphinus delphis, Stenella coeruleoalba, Phocoena phocoena, and Tursiops truncatus) and analyzed using a conventional PCR assay targeting the DNA polymerase gene partially.

A Scoping Review on Carotenoid Profiling in spp.: A Vast Avenue for Expanding the Knowledge on the Species.

The genus is recognised for its ethnopharmacological, sensorial, and nutritional significance. Yet, the screening of its dietary and bioactive molecules has mainly targeted hydrophilic metabolites. Following the PRISMA-P protocol, this review assessed the current knowledge on carotenoid composition and analysis within , examining 968 records from seven databases and including 17 studies focusing on carotenoid separation and identification in plant parts.

Postweaning Development Influences Endogenous VPAC Modulation of LTP Induced by Theta-Burst Stimulation: A Link to Maturation of the Hippocampal GABAergic System.

Long-term potentiation (LTP) induced by theta-burst stimulation (TBS) undergoes postweaning developmental changes partially linked to GABAergic circuit maturation. Endogenous vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) acting on its VPAC receptor strongly influences LTP induced by theta-burst stimulation (TBS), an effect dependent on GABAergic transmission. Although VPAC receptor levels are developmentally regulated during embryogenesis, their variation along postweaning development is unknown, as is the VPAC modulation of LTP or its relation to hippocampal GABAergic circuit maturation.

 To perform the cross-cultural adaptation and translation into Brazilian Portuguese of the Spine Oncology Study Group - Outcomes Questionnaire 2.0 (SOSG-OQ 2.0) to enable its application to Brazilian patients and to allow Brazilian researchers to use a questionnaire that is on trend in the scientific literature.

Second primary cancers among females with a first primary breast cancer: a population-based study in Northern Portugal.

Purpose: To estimate the incidence rate of second primary cancers (SPCs) and the cumulative incidence of metachronous [diagnosed > 2 months after a first primary cancer (FPC)] SPCs in patients with a breast FPC, and to compare the incidence of SPC [overall, synchronous (≤ 2 months of the FPC) and metachronous] with that expected in the general female population.

Methods: A cohort of patients with a breast FPC from the North Region Cancer Registry of Portugal, diagnosed in 2000-2010 (n = 15,981), was followed to 31 December 2015 for synchronous and metachronous SPCs. Cumulative incidence of metachronous SPCs considering death as a competing event, and incidence rates and standardized incidence ratios of SPCs were estimated.

Sensitivity of PCR in conjunctival swab samples for the diagnosis of canine visceral leishmaniasis: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

To compare the sensitivity of conjunctival swab (CS) and conventional samples (blood, spleen, liver, lymphoid and cutaneous tissue) in the diagnosis of canine visceral leishmaniasis (CVL) by polymerase chain reaction (PCR), a systematic review and meta-analysis was carried out using PubMed, Science Direct, Scopus, Web of Science, VHL/BVS (Virtual Health Library), CAPES, and Scielo databases. Articles published from 2002 to 2022 were considered and the review was updated in Jul 2023. From the total of 371 identified studies, 8 met all the eligibility criteria and were included in this review.

Evaluation of a novel phantom for the quality assurance of a six-degree-of-freedom couch 3D-printed at multiple centres.

This study aimed to validate a bespoke 3D-printed phantom for use in quality assurance (QA) of a 6 degrees-of-freedom (6DoF) treatment couch. A novel phantom design comprising a main body with internal cube structures, was fabricated at five centres using Polylactic Acid (PLA) material, with an additional phantom produced incorporating a PLA-stone hybrid material. Correctional setup shifts were determined using image registration by 3D-3D matching of high HU cube structures between obtained cone-beam computer tomography (CBCT) images to reference CTs, containing cubes with fabricated rotational offsets of 3.

The crosstalk between Stroke and Cancer: Incidence of cancer after a first-ever cerebrovascular event in a population-based study.

Objectives: To determine the cancer incidence after the first-ever cerebrovascular event (CVE) and compare it to the cancer incidence in the population from the same region.

Methods: We evaluated 1069 patients with a first-ever CVE (Ischaemic or haemorrhagic stroke and Transient Ischaemic Attack) from a prospective population registry of stroke and transient focal neurological attacks, diagnosed between 2009 and 2011. We conducted a structured search to identify cancer-related variables and case-fatality for a period of 8 years following CVE.

Marine macroinvertebrate ecosystem services under changing conditions of seagrasses and mangroves.

This study aimed to investigate the impact of changing environmental conditions on MMI ES in seagrasses and mangroves. We used data from satellite and biodiversity platforms combined with field data to explore the links between ecosystem pressures (habitat conversion, overexploitation, climate change), conditions (environmental quality, ecosystem attributes), and MMI ES (provisioning, regulation, cultural). Both seagrass and mangrove extents increased significantly since 2016.

New species and illustrated key of (Scarabaeidae, Rutelinae, Rutelini) from the Amazon biome of Brazil.

The phytophagous scarab genus MacLeay (Scarabaeidae, Rutelinae, Rutelini) is reviewed from the Brazilian Amazon region. Three new species are described and illustrated from the states of Amazonas, Pará, and Rondônia: , , and Two species, Neita-Moreno and Burmeister, are recorded for the first time in Brazil (new country records). Soula is a new synonym of Burmeister; hence this species no longer includes subspecies.

Pertuzumab in Combination with Trastuzumab and Docetaxel in the Neoadjuvant Treatment for HER2-Positive Breast Cancer.

Introduction: This study aims to assess safety and effectiveness of pertuzumab in combination with trastuzumab and docetaxel in the neoadjuvant treatment (NeoT) of HER2-positive breast cancer.

Methods: Two consecutive retrospective cohorts ( = 94, 2012-2015 and 2015-2017) of adult women with HER2-positive breast cancer, receiving NeoT at the breast clinic in Portugal (IPO-Porto), were followed. All patients had surgery and received trastuzumab as adjuvant therapy.

Harmonization of multi-scanner magnetic resonance spectroscopy: ENIGMA consortium task group considerations.

Magnetic resonance spectroscopy is a powerful, non-invasive, quantitative imaging technique that allows for the measurement of brain metabolites that has demonstrated utility in diagnosing and characterizing a broad range of neurological diseases. Its impact, however, has been limited due to small sample sizes and methodological variability in addition to intrinsic limitations of the method itself such as its sensitivity to motion. The lack of standardization from a data acquisition and data processing perspective makes it difficult to pool multiple studies and/or conduct multisite studies that are necessary for supporting clinically relevant findings.

Costs, effectiveness, and safety associated with Chimeric Antigen Receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy: Results from a comprehensive cancer center.

Real world effectiveness, toxicity and costs analyses from chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-T cell therapy are of utmost relevance to determine whether and how to offer patients highly personalized immunotherapy. In this study, we aimed at describing CAR T-cells effectiveness, safety and costs in a Portuguese Comprehensive Cancer Center. We performed a retrospective descriptive study of adult patients with relapsed/refractory diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), primary mediastinal B-cell lymphoma and transformed follicular lymphoma referred to CAR T-cell therapy, between May 2019 and February 2021.
