Fungal Syst Evol
December 2024
The study of the Brazilian cave mycobiota has revealed a rich but highly diverse assemblage of fungi, with , , and being the most frequently reported genera. The present study investigated the airborne fungi and fungi obtained from the bodies of bats, guano, and the soil/sediment from the caves Urubu (in the Atlantic Forest) and Furna Feia (in the Caatinga dryland forest) in the Northeast region of Brazil. Fungal strains were identified based on morphological features and multilocus phylogenetic analyses of ITS, beta-tubulin (), calmodulin (), and RNA polymerase II second largest subunit () sequences.

Here we describe in detail two new species of these genera sampled from caves of the semiarid region of Rio Grande do Norte state, Brazil. Cyphoderus caatinguensis sp.

Cervical cancer stands as a significant contributor to mortality among women. Cervical cancer screening (CCS) and HPV vaccination are recent, with few studies about their impact on the prevalence of HPV types.

Based on morphological characters and molecular phylogenetic reconstructions, it was possible to diagnose two new species and restrict H. antenori to the rio Jaguaribe basin.

Brazilian caves have been demonstrated to be biodiversity hotspots for known and unknown fungal species. We investigated the richness of culturable fungi in a tropical cave in Brazil by isolating these microorganisms from the sediment and air.

Migalastat is an oral chaperone therapy for Fabry patients with amenable variants. We previously reported a case of a 60-year-old male patient with a classic phenotype of Fabry disease, presenting with two variants: p.

Objectives: To characterize patients admitted with premature ACS, comparing with those with nonpremature ACS.
Methods: We performed a retrospective study encompassing patients of the Portuguese Registry (ProACS), comparing two groups: one composed of men less than 55 and women less than 65 years old; and other with men ≥55 and women ≥65 years old at the ACS admission.
Morphology, habitat and various selective pressures (e.g. social and sexual selection) can influence the evolution of acoustic signals, but the relative importance of their effects is not well understood.

Thus, the aim of the study was to analyze the role of genetic polymorphisms rs1051266 in SLC19A1 gene and rs1805087 in MTR gene and their associations with ALS development. A case-control study was conducted with 101 individuals with ALS and 119 individuals without diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases, from the Brazilian central population.

We report a case in which the limitations of these techniques are exposed, showing that post-operative evaluation of tissue layers remains the gold standard in establishing this diagnosis. ().

Although LVNC has been associated with mutations in several genes encoding for transcriptional regulators, ion channels, sarcomeric and mitochondrial proteins, approximately 60% of LVNC patients do not present these genetic alterations. Here, we describe an induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC) line (UALGi002-A) originated from a LVNC female patient (LVNC-hiPSC) who does not present any previously known mutations associated to LVNC.

This work shows different ways to process the images which contain various blood phenomena happening in microfluidic devices and in microcirculation. For this purpose, the current methods used for tracking red blood cells (RBCs) flowing through a glass capillary and techniques to measure the cell-free layer thickness in different kinds of microchannels will be presented.

To date, mutations in more than 40 genes have been associated with LVNC, however the exact mechanisms underlying the disease remain unknown. Here, we describe an induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) line (UALGi001-A) from a LVNC patient (LVNC-iPSC) that does not present mutations in the genes most commonly associated with the disease (van Waning et al.

Whilst T1 (IFN-γ) cell-mediated responses generated in CRC are well documented and are associated with improved survival, antigen-specific T17 (IL-17A) responses have not been similarly measured.
Methods: We sought to determine the cytokine profile of circulating tumour antigen-(5T4/CEA) specific T cells of 34 CRC patients to address whether antigen-specific IL-17A responses were detectable and whether these were distinct to IFN-γ responses.
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a rare neurodegenerative disease that affects motor neurons and promotes progressive muscle atrophy. It has a multifactorial etiology, where environmental conditions playing a remarkable role through the increase of oxidative stress. Genetic polymorphisms in cell detoxification genes, such as Glutathione S-Transferase Pi 1 (GSTP1) can contribute to excessive oxidative stress, and therefore may be a risk factor to ALS.

Air inside of blood vessels is a phenomenon known as gas embolism. During the past years, studies have been performed to assess the influence of air bubbles in microcirculation. In this study, we investigated the flow of bubbles in a microchannel network with several bifurcations, mimicking part of a capillary system.

The ability to understand the complexity of cancer-related data has been prompted by the applications of (1) computer and data sciences, including data mining, predictive analytics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence, and (2) advances in imaging technology and probe development. Computational modelling and simulation are systematic and cost-effective tools able to identify important temporal/spatial patterns (and relationships), characterize distinct molecular features of cancer states, and address other relevant aspects, including tumor detection and heterogeneity, progression and metastasis, and drug resistance. These approaches have provided invaluable insights for improving the experimental design of therapeutic delivery systems and for increasing the translational value of the results obtained from early and preclinical studies.
