Housing is an often overlooked yet fundamental social determinant of health. Like other social epidemiology exposures, housing faces a tension between the promise of modern causal inference methods and the messy reality of complex social processes and reliance on observational data. We use examples from over a decade of research to illustrate some of the key challenges in undertaking causally focused healthy housing research and demonstrate approaches that have been applied to address these challenges.

The completion of exercise in different body positions can impact the function of various components of the oxygen delivery pathway; however, the effect of the haemodynamic conditions induced by a semi-upright body position on the integrative physiological response to exercise is poorly understood. The purpose of this study was to explore the effect of a semi-upright body position on cardiac output (CO), vastus lateralis oxygen saturation ( ), oxygen consumption ( ) and ratings of perceived exertion (Borg RPE) during submaximal cycling. Hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction (HPV) rapidly and reversibly matches lung ventilation (V) and perfusion (Q), optimizing oxygen uptake and systemic oxygen delivery. HPV occurs in small pulmonary arteries (PA), which uniquely constrict to hypoxia. Although HPV is modulated by the endothelium the core mechanism of HPV resides in PA smooth muscle cells (PASMC).

Introduction: Australia's limited social housing has created geographically concentrated locales of poverty with high smoking rates. The impact of social housing on smoking initiation among adolescent residents is unknown, despite adolescence being a critical period for smoking prevention. We examine the relationship between social housing residency and smoking initiation amongst adolescents to quantify the likelihood of smoking uptake amongst social housing residents compared to a similar cohort in other tenures, accounting for socio-economic factors and household exposure to smoking.

Background: While it is well-established that exposure to dampness or mold in homes negatively affects physical health, the association with mental health remains less well evidenced. As plausible psychosocial and biological pathways exist between dampness and mold exposure and poor mental health, a review of evidence is required.

The UN-Habitat World Cities Report 2020 highlighted that overcrowded housing, not urban density, is the major contributing factor to the spread of COVID-19. The relatively successful ability of densely populated cities such as Seoul, Singapore, Tokyo and New York City to manage virus spread supports this. We hypothesise that, given the complexity of the interaction between people and place, the relative contribution of density and crowding to the spread of infectious diseases may be contingent on local factors.

The human forearm model is commonly employed in physiological investigations exploring local vascular function and oxygen delivery; however, the effect of arm dominance on exercising forearm hemodynamics and skeletal muscle oxygen saturation (SmO2) in untrained individuals is poorly understood. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore the effect of self-identified arm dominance on forearm hemodynamics and SmO2 in untrained individuals during submaximal, non-ischemic forearm exercise. Twenty healthy individuals (23±4 years, 50% female; 80% right-handed) completed three-minute bouts of supine rhythmic (1 second contraction: 2 second relaxation duty cycle) forearm handgrip exercise at both absolute (10kg; 98N) and relative (30% of maximal voluntary contraction) intensities in each forearm.

Here, we step outside those fields and summarize recent advances in the theory of and evidence for punctuated equilibria, gathered from contemporary observations in geology, molecular biology, genetics, anthropology, and sociotechnology. Taken in the aggregate, these observations lead to a more general theory that we refer to as punctuated evolution.

Background: The prognosis of individual dogs with meningoencephalomyelitis of unknown etiology (MUE) remains difficult to predict. MUE cases with no lesions detected by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) occur, but it is unknown whether this finding is associated with prognosis.

Chronic thromboembolic pulmonary disease (CTEPD) is characterized by organized nonresolving thrombi in pulmonary arteries (PA). Knowledge regarding the long-term consequences of pulmonary embolism (PE) in children is limited. This cohort study describes the long-term outcomes of PE in children who were followed-up at a single-center institution using a local protocol that included clinical evaluation, chest imaging, echocardiography, pulmonary function tests, and cardiopulmonary exercise tests at follow-up, starting 3 to 6 months after acute PE. Children objectively diagnosed with PE at age 0 to 18 years, who had ≥6 months of follow-up were included.

To date, much of the health focus of environmental policy has been on preventing physical health impacts of environmental exposures. Recent research has however highlighted increasingly concurrent mental health effects and its consideration is an emerging requirement for many governments and their agencies, yet there are limited universal mental health assessment tools for environmental exposures. For the past two decades, researchers and policy makers have known very little about conditions within Australia's housing stock due to a lack of systematic and reliable data. In 2022, a collaboration of Australian universities and researchers commissioned a large survey of 22,550 private rental, social rental and homeowner households to build a data infrastructure on the household and demographic characteristics, housing quality and conditions in the Australian housing stock. This is the third and largest instalment in a national series of housing conditions data infrastructures.

The theory of punctuated equilibrium (PE) was developed a little over 50 years ago to explain long-term, large-scale appearance and disappearance of species in the fossil record. A theory designed specifically for that purpose cannot be expected, out of the box, to be directly applicable to biocultural evolution, but in revised form, PE offers a promising approach to incorporating not only a wealth of recent empirical research on genetic, linguistic, and technological evolution but also large databases that document human biological and cultural diversity across time and space. Here we isolate the fundamental components of PE and propose which pieces, when reassembled or renamed, can be highly useful in evolutionary anthropology, especially as humanity faces abrupt ecological challenges on an increasingly larger scale.

Objective: We sought to evaluate the association between diet and angiogenic biomarkers in KpB mice, and the association between these markers, body mass index (BMI), and overall survival (OS) in high-grade serous cancers (HGSC).

Methods: Tumors previously obtained from KpB mice subjected to high-fat diets (HFD, n = 10) or low-fat diets (LFD, n = 10) were evaluated for angiogenesis based on CD-31 microvessel density (MVD). Data from prior microarray analysis (Agilent 244 K arrays) conducted in 10 mice were utilized to assess associations between diet and angiogenetic biomarkers.
