Efforts to increase the number of functioning arteriovenous fistulas in chronic kidney disease (CKD) stages 4 and 5 have been impacted by concerns about the risk for contrast-induced nephropathy during diagnostic and interventional procedures for poorly developed fistulas. We conducted a prospective observational study of low volume iodinated contrast administration for fistulography and angioplasty in a CKD stage 4 and stage 5 population pretreated with a sodium bicarbonate protocol. Acute kidney injury was assessed by change in serum creatinine and urinary neutrophil-gelatinase associated lipocalcin (NGAL).

A model for using a concept inventory as a tool for students' assessment and faculty professional development.

This essay describes how the use of a concept inventory has enhanced professional development and curriculum reform efforts of a faculty teaching community. The Host Pathogen Interactions (HPI) teaching team is composed of research and teaching faculty with expertise in HPI who share the goal of improving the learning experience of students in nine linked undergraduate microbiology courses. To support evidence-based curriculum reform, we administered our HPI Concept Inventory as a pre- and postsurvey to approximately 400 students each year since 2006.

Subclinical depressive symptoms constitute a primary risk factor for major depression as well as for cardiovascular conditions, which may be mediated by endocrine or immune alterations. The aim of this study was to assess the association between the extent of subclinical depressive symptoms and neuroendocrine and immune cell responses to acute psychosocial stress in healthy females. In N = 33 healthy premenopausal women, state anxiety, plasma adrenocorticotropic hormone and serum cortisol, and interleukin-6 (IL-6) concentration responses to public speaking stress were assessed.

Background: Oral health is an essential component of general health and well-being, yet barriers to the access of dental care and unmet needs are pronounced, particularly in rural areas. Despite associations with systemic health, few studies have assessed unmet dental needs across the lifespan as they present in primary care. This study describes the prevalence of oral health conditions and unmet dental needs among patients presenting for routine care in a rural Oregon family medicine practice.

In 2003, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health conducted an anthropometric survey of 3997 respirator users, of which 1013 subjects were scanned with a Cyberware 3-D Rapid Digitizer. It presents evidence to support trauma-focused psychotherapy, medications, and a combination of interventions in a multimodal approach.

Time-dependent, three-dimensional simulation of free-electron-laser oscillators.

We describe a procedure for the simulation of free-electron-laser (FEL) oscillators. The simulation uses a combination of the MEDUSA simulation code for the FEL interaction and the OPC code to model the resonator. The simulations are compared with recent observations of the oscillator at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility and are in substantial agreement with the experiment.
