Background: The province of Nova Scotia has the highest rates of perinatal mental health disorders in Canada, and rates of exclusive breastfeeding fall below the Canadian national average. Exclusive breastfeeding is identified as a protective factor against the development of perinatal mental health disorders. Lactation consultant support is associated with increased rates of exclusive breastfeeding and decreased rates of perinatal mental health disorders.

We re-examined the reported increase in mitochondrial ROS production during acute hypoxia in cells. Using the Amplex Ultrared/horseradish peroxidase assay we found a decrease, not increase, in hydrogen peroxide release from HEK293 cells under acute hypoxia, at times ranging from 1 min to 3 h. The rates of superoxide/hydrogen peroxide production from each of the three major sites (site I in complex I and site III in complex III in mitochondria, and NADH oxidases (NOX) in the cytosol) were decreased to the same extent by acute hypoxia, with no change in the cells' ability to degrade added hydrogen peroxide.

Research focused on children with intellectual disabilities has been of increasing interest over the last two decades. However, a considerable lag in the amount of research that is representative and generalizable to this population in comparison to neurotypical children remains, largely attributed to issues with participant engagement and recruitment. Challenges and barriers associated with engaging and recruiting this population include lack of research to provide a sound foundation of knowledge, ethical considerations, parental attitudes, family commitments, and organizational gatekeeping.

Here, we studied in vitro and in vivo the effect of indoxyl sulfate (IS), an indolic uremic toxin, on myoblast proliferation, differentiation and expression of myogenic regulatory factors (MRF)-myoblast determination protein 1 (MyoD1), myogenin (Myog), Myogenic Factor 5 (Myf5) and myogenic regulatory factor 4 (Myf6/MRF4)-and expression of myosin heavy chain, Myh2.

Objective: The objective of this review is to identify evidence on pain assessment during acute procedures in hospitalized neonates at risk of neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome (NOWS).

Introduction: While all neonates are routinely exposed to various painful procedures, neonates at risk of NOWS have longer hospital stays and are exposed to multiple painful procedures. We recently uncovered that the intestinal hormone Fibroblast Growth Factor 19 (FGF19) is able to promote skeletal muscle mass and strength in rodent models, in addition to its capacity to improve glucose homeostasis. The cytoskeleton comprises three polymerizing structures that have been studied for a long time, actin microfilaments, microtubules and intermediate filaments, plus more recently investigated dynamic assemblies like septins or the endocytic-sorting complex required for transport (ESCRT) complex. These filament-forming proteins control several cell functions through crosstalks with each other and with membranes. In this review, we report recent works that address how septins bind to membranes, and influence their shaping, organization, properties and functions, either by binding to them directly or indirectly through other cytoskeleton elements.

Background: Strong evidence suggests that maternal-infant skin-to-skin contact (SSC) is effective in reducing behavioural responses to pain. Given the multi-sensory benefits of SSC, it is highly likely that SSC provided during pain in early life may reduce pain-induced brain activity.
