Aim: The aim of this study is to further develop a preliminary framework into a model that can translate mechanisms into output and impact, based on the views of those working in practice and the relations between the mechanisms: a model that can inform practitioners and organizations on what has to be in place to shape a learning and innovating environment in nursing.

Background: A Learning and Innovation Network (LIN) is a network of healthcare professionals, students and education representatives who come together to be part of a nursing community to integrate education, research and practice to contribute to quality of care. In a previous study a preliminary framework was developed through a concept analysis based on publications.

Reported herein is the purification of the pigment of black sturgeon caviar and its unambiguous identification as a typical eumelanin by means of chemical degradation coupled with electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) evidence. HPLC and LC-MS analysis of oxidative degradation mixtures revealed the formation of pyrrole-2,3,5-tricarboxylic acid (PTCA), a specific marker of eumelanin pigments, in yields compatible with a 6.5% w/w pigment content.

There is growing evidence of greater rates of morbidity and mortality in hospitals during out-of-hours shifts, which appears to be exacerbated during the period in which newly qualified doctors commence work. In order to combat this issue, an online simulation of a night shift was developed and trialled in order to improve the non-technical skills of newly qualified doctors and, ultimately, improve clinical outcomes. A randomised feasibility trial of the electronic training simulation was performed with medical students (n=30) at the end of their training and in the initial weeks of working at a large teaching hospital.

The B23 Circular Dichroism beamline at Diamond Light Source has been operational since 2009 and has seen visits from more than 200 user groups, who have generated large amounts of data. Based on the experience of overseeing the users' progress at B23, four key areas requiring the most assistance are identified: planning of experiments and note-keeping; designing titration experiments; processing and analysis of the collected data; and production of experimental reports. To streamline these processes an integrated software package has been developed and made available for the users.

Relapsing polychondritis (RP) is a recurrent, chronic und rare disease of unknown etiology, characterized by inflammation of cartilaginous structures of the ears, nose, respiratory tract and joints. The association with HLA-DR4 and the occurrence of antibodies to type-II collagen and other autoantibodies suggest that an immunologic mechanism is involved in its pathogenesis. In about 30% of occurrences RP is associated with other rheumatic or autoimmune diseases.

Treatment of systemic sclerosis (scleroderma) presents a challenge to both the patient and the physician. Established approaches include long-term physiotherapy, disease-modifying agents such as D-penicillamine, and treatment of organ involvement. These efforts are often unsatisfactory since the results are poor.

Neonatal lupus erythematosus is a typical example of passively acquired autoimmune disease. Congenital heart block is the main complication caused by transplacentally transferred maternal IgG antibodies directed against SS-A- or SS-B-antigen. While the transient lupus dermatitis occurs post partum and is often triggered by UV-light exposition, the irreversible cardial damage takes place between the 18.
