Point-of-care ultrasound use for vascular access assessment and cannulation in hemodialysis: A scoping review.

Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) for access assessment and guided cannulation has become more common in hemodialysis units. The aims of this scoping review were to determine: circumstances in which renal nurses and technicians use POCUS; the barriers and facilitators; and evidence of the effects of POCUS in guiding assessment and cannulation. A search was conducted of CINAHL, Medline, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and ProQuest, Trove and Google Scholar as grey literature sources.

An Exercise Program for Peritoneal Dialysis Patients in the United States: A Feasibility Study.

Background: People with end-stage kidney disease receiving peritoneal dialysis (PD) are generally physically inactive and frail. Exercise studies in PD are scarce and currently there are no PD exercise programs in the United States. The primary objective of this study was to test the feasibility of a combined resistance and cardiovascular exercise program for PD patients under the care of a dedicated home dialysis center in the United States.

Phase integration bias in a motion grouping task.

The perception of the direction of global motion depends on our ability to integrate local motion signals over space and time. We examined motion binding using a task requiring integration of relative phase. Observers completed multiple tasks involving clockwise and counter clockwise motion in a stimulus comprising four sets of linearly arranged dots, two moving horizontally and two moving vertically along sinusoidal trajectories differing in phase.

Laser-structured superhydrophobic/superoleophilic aluminum surfaces for efficient oil/water separation.

The current demand for oil/water separation with an efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly method is increasing. A laser-structured superhydrophobic/superoleophilic aluminum was prepared by using a nanosecond laser. The aluminum plate was used for oil/water separation without external force, which can replace the traditional porous materials.

Do Behaviour Assessments in a Shelter Predict the Behaviour of Dogs Post-Adoption?

In shelters it is usual to conduct standardised behaviour assessments on admitted dogs. The information gathered from the assessment is used to identify dogs that are suitable for adoption and assist in matching the dog with suitable adopters. These assessments are also used to guide behaviour modification programs for dogs that display some unwanted behaviours.

Advances in exercise therapy in predialysis chronic kidney disease, hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, and kidney transplantation.

Purpose Of Review: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is characterized by poor levels of physical activity which contribute to increased morbidity across the disease trajectory. The short nature, small samples, and poor methodology across most studies have failed to translate the role of exercise in CKD into its adoption as a frontline adjunct therapeutic option. This review focuses on recent advances surrounding the benefits of exercise interventions across the CKD spectrum.

Perceptual learning of detection of textures in noise.

We examined whether the effects of practice on visual detection are stimulus specific and whether practice alters response bias. Eighty-four subjects performed yes-no detection of band-limited noise patterns (textures) in two levels of external noise, on two consecutive days. On day 2, one-half of the observers switched to novel textures.

The Axial Alignment of Titin on the Muscle Thick Filament Supports Its Role as a Molecular Ruler.

The giant protein titin is expressed in vertebrate striated muscle where it spans half a sarcomere from the Z-disc to the M-band and is essential for muscle organisation, activity and health. The C-terminal portion of titin is closely associated with the thick, myosin-containing filament and exhibits a complex pattern of immunoglobulin and fibronectin domains. This pattern reflects features of the filament organisation suggesting that it acts as a molecular ruler and template, but the exact axial disposition of the molecule has not been determined.

Parent Perspectives in Shared Decision-Making for Children With Medical Complexity.

Objective: Shared decision-making (SDM) may improve outcomes for children with medical complexity (CMC). CMC have lower rates of SDM than other children, but little is known about how to improve SDM for CMC. The objective of this study is to describe parent perspectives of SDM for CMC and identify opportunities to improve elements of SDM specific to this vulnerable population.

Validity and Reliability of Hand-Held Dynamometry for Abdominal Flexion Muscular Assessment.

Context: Abdominal musculature underpins core stability, which can allow for optimal performance in many activities of daily living (eg, walking and rising from a chair). Therefore, assessment of the abdominal muscles poses as an important consideration for clinicians in order to identify people at risk of injury or functional decline.

Objective: This study aimed to build on the limited amount of knowledge surrounding abdominal muscle strength assessments by investigating the validity and reliability of hand-held dynamometry (HHD) for the assessment of isometric abdominal flexion strength.

The vaginal microbiota associates with the regression of untreated cervical intraepithelial neoplasia 2 lesions.

Emerging evidence suggests associations between the vaginal microbiota (VMB) composition, human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, and cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN); however, causal inference remains uncertain. Here, we use bacterial DNA sequencing from serially collected vaginal samples from a cohort of 87 adolescent and young women aged 16-26 years with histologically confirmed, untreated CIN2 lesions to determine whether VMB composition affects rates of regression over 24 months. We show that women with a Lactobacillus-dominant microbiome at baseline are more likely to have regressive disease at 12 months.

In this study, we determined the capacity of the rapid evaporative ionization mass spectrometry (REIMS), also known as intelligent knife (iKnife), to discriminate between healthy, preinvasive, and invasive cervical tissue. Cervical tissue samples were collected from women with healthy, human papilloma virus (HPV) ± cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN), or cervical cancer.

Self-reported snake management practices among owners in Victoria, Australia.

Background: A large number of snakes are kept as pets in Western societies. Few studies have been undertaken to assess keeping practices of snakes by private owners in Australia. Therefore, there is concern that some owners may not understand even basic husbandry requirements.

Examining Adherence to Medication in Patients With Atrial Fibrillation: The Role of Medication Beliefs, Attitudes, and Depression.

Background/objectives: This study examined whether beliefs about medicines, drug attitudes, and depression independently predicted anticoagulant and antiarrhythmic adherence (focusing on the implementation phase of nonadherence) in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF).

Methods: This cross-sectional study was part of a larger longitudinal study. Patients with AF (N = 118) completed the Patient Health Questionnaire-8.

Evaluation of single molecule array digital immunoassay technology to quantitate neurofilament light chain.

Globally, neurodegeneration accounts for significant morbidity and mortality among the elderly. Millions of people are afflicted with neurodegenerative diseases, with the most notable cases attributed to Alzheimer's, Huntington's, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and Parkinson's diseases. Sensitive assays that can detect proteopathic anomalies indicative of early neurodegeneration have remained elusive.

The influence of contextual factors on an individual's ability to work with an assistance dog.

Purpose: First-time assistance dog handlers experience a profound life change when they bring an assistance dog into their home. Therefore, this article investigates the broad context of handlers' lived experiences prior to and throughout the first year after acquiring an assistance dog.

Materials And Methods: To understand holistic experiences better, semi-structured interviews were conducted with first-time assistance dog handlers ( = 7), parents ( = 7), assistance dog instructors ( = 6), carers/other individuals ( = 3) at four time points: before an individual received an assistance dog, and then at three further times for up to one year after they received the assistance dog.

Hemodynamic and perceptual responses to blood flow-restricted exercise among patients undergoing dialysis.

End-stage kidney disease is associated with reduced exercise capacity, muscle atrophy, and impaired muscle function. While these may be improved with exercise, single modalities of exercise do not traditionally elicit improvements across all required physiological domains. Blood flow-restricted exercise may improve all of these physiological domains with low intensities traditionally considered insufficient for these adaptions.

Peri-implantation urinary hormone monitoring distinguishes between types of first-trimester spontaneous pregnancy loss.

Background: Lutenising hormone (LH) and human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) hormone are useful biochemical markers to indicate ovulation and embryonic implantation, respectively. We explored "point-of-care" LH and hCG testing using a digital home-testing device in a cohort trying to conceive.

Objective: To determine conception and spontaneous pregnancy loss rates, and to assess whether trends in LH-hCG interval which are known to be associated with pregnancy viability could be identified with point-of-care testing.

Modifiable Physical Factors Associated With Physical Functioning for Patients Receiving Dialysis: A Systematic Review.

Background: Patients receiving dialysis have reduced physical function, which is associated with unfavorable clinical outcomes and decreased quality of life. The authors aimed to identify and explore modifiable physical factors associated with physical function for patients receiving dialysis.

Methods: Searches were performed in MEDLINE, Embase, Ovid Emcare, and The Cochrane Library in October 2018.
