Background: There has been an increased interest in meniscus preservation over the last decade. Several risk factors for the failure of meniscal repair have been identified. However, the timing of meniscal repair has not been extensively assessed in the literature, and there is currently no high-quality evidence on the optimal timing of performing meniscal repair after an injury with regard to outcomes.

Early Pennsylvanian Lagerstätte reveals a diverse ecosystem on a subhumid, alluvial fan.

Much of what we know about terrestrial life during the Carboniferous Period comes from Middle Pennsylvanian (~315-307 Mya) Coal Measures deposited in low-lying wetland environments. We know relatively little about terrestrial ecosystems from the Early Pennsylvanian, which was a critical interval for the diversification of insects, arachnids, tetrapods, and seed plants. Here we report a diverse Early Pennsylvanian trace and body fossil Lagerstätte (~320-318 Mya) from the Wamsutta Formation of eastern North America, distinct from coal-bearing deposits, preserved in clastic substrates within basin margin conglomerates.

Hoffa's fat pad resection during total knee arthroplasty does not affect functioning and gait: a double-blind randomized clinical trial.

Introduction: Hoffa's fat pad is considered a source of anterior knee pain and may limit prosthetic knee function. Resection of Hoffa's fat pad in total knee arthroplasty (TKA), however, is controversial, and little is known about the functional outcomes including gait quality. This double-blind randomized controlled trial (i) compared functional recovery between TKAs where Hoffa was resected or preserved, and (ii) compared recovery of self-reported function with objective (gait-related) outcomes.

Bioabsorbable, subcutaneous naltrexone implants mitigate fentanyl-induced respiratory depression at 3 months-A pilot study in male canines.

The aim of this study is to determine if extended-release, bioabsorbable, subcutaneous naltrexone (NTX) implants can mitigate respiratory depression after an intravenous injection (IV) of fentanyl. Six different BIOabsorbable Polymeric Implant Naltrexone (BIOPIN) formulations, comprising combinations of Poly-d,l-Lactic Acid (PDLLA) and/or Polycaprolactone (PCL-1 or PCL-2), were used to create subcutaneous implants. Both placebo and naltrexone implants were implanted subcutaneously in male dogs.

Mid-term outcomes of acute and delayed total knee arthroplasty following tibial plateau fractures: A matched cohort study.

Introduction: Patients who sustain a tibial plateau fracture (TPF) have a higher risk of receiving total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Rarely, TKA is used as acute treatment for TPFs. This study aimed to compare both acute and delayed TKA following TPF with matched patients undergoing elective TKA for osteoarthritis.

Anxiety and depression prior to total knee arthroplasty are associated with worse pain and subjective function: A prospective comparative study.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of preoperative anxiety and depression on subjective function, pain and revision rates following total knee arthroplasty (TKA).

Methods: A prospective comparative study was conducted, including 349 patients undergoing TKA surgery between January 2019 and April 2021. Patients completed the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) questionnaire preoperatively, and a set of Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) preoperatively and at 6, 12 and 24 months postoperatively.

The mind matters: Psychological factors influence subjective outcomes following unicompartmental knee arthroplasty-A prospective study.

Purpose: This study aimed to investigate how psychological factors, including pain catastrophizing (PC), anxiety and depression affect preoperative and postoperative subjective outcomes in patients undergoing unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA).

Methods: A prospective comparative study was performed among 150 patients undergoing medial or lateral UKA for isolated unicompartmental osteoarthritis. Patients were categorized based on their preoperative PC and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, stratifying them into groups with PC, anxiety or depression, and those without these psychological factors.

Background: Preoperative intra-articular corticosteroid injections to the hip joint increase the risk of periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) during primary total hip arthroplasty (THA). This study aimed to determine the relationship between preoperative timing of intra-articular corticosteroid injections and PJI risk following THA using data from a single-center hospital.

Methods: This single-center, retrospective cohort study included patients who underwent a THA between 2014 and 2020.

Background And Purpose: previous RCT compared short-term results of above-elbow cast (AEC) with early conversion to below-elbow cast (BEC) in children with non-reduced diaphyseal both-bone forearm fractures. After 7 months both groups had comparable function. Our primary aim was to investigate whether forearm rotation improves or worsens over time.

However, no long-term studies have been performed on the plasticity of the auditory system as a function of musical training from childhood to adulthood. The long-term interplay between developmental and training-induced neuroplasticity of auditory processing is still unknown.

System identification: a feasible, reliable and valid way to quantify upper limb motor impairments.

Background: Upper limb impairments in a hemiparetic arm are clinically quantified by well-established clinical scales, known to suffer poor validity, reliability, and sensitivity. Alternatively, robotics can assess motor impairments by characterizing joint dynamics through system identification. In this study, we establish the merits of quantifying abnormal synergy, spasticity, and changes in joint viscoelasticity using system identification, evaluating (1) feasibility and quality of parametric estimates, (2) test-retest reliability, (3) differences between healthy controls and patients with upper limb impairments, and (4) construct validity.

Human auditory cortex (AC) organization resembles the core-belt-parabelt organization in nonhuman primates. Previous studies assessed mostly spatial characteristics; however, temporal aspects were little considered so far. We employed co-registration of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) in musicians with and without absolute pitch (AP) to achieve spatial and temporal segregation of human auditory responses.

Rehabilitation enhances epothilone-induced locomotor recovery after spinal cord injury.

Microtubule stabilization through epothilones is a promising preclinical therapy for functional recovery following spinal cord injury that stimulates axon regeneration, reduces growth-inhibitory molecule deposition and promotes functional improvements. Rehabilitation therapy is the only clinically validated approach to promote functional improvements following spinal cord injury. However, whether microtubule stabilization can augment the beneficial effects of rehabilitation therapy or act in concert with it to further promote repair remains unknown.

The impact of early remission on disease trajectory and patient outcomes in major depression disorder (MDD): A targeted literature review and microsimulation modeling approach based on the Sequenced Treatment Alternatives to Relieve Depression (STAR*D) study.

Background: While literature has suggested that the duration of a major depressive episode (MDE) may affect both symptomatic and functional outcomes in major depressive disorder (MDD), study designs are limited in their ability to isolate a causal relationship.

Methods: A targeted literature review was conducted using the MEDLINE database to assess whether there was an association between (1) shorter duration of an MDE, or (2) increased rapidity of symptom improvement, and MDD outcomes in adult patients. Given findings from the literature, we hypothesized that rapid symptom improvement could be associated with other longer-term clinical outcomes and used a previously-developed microsimulation model to test this hypothesis.

The luciferin sulfokinase (coelenterazine sulfotransferase) of Renilla was previously reported to activate the storage form, luciferyl sulfate (coelenterazine sulfate) to luciferin (coelenterazine), the substrate for the luciferase bioluminescence reaction. The gene coding for the coelenterazine sulfotransferase has not been identified. Here we used a combined proteomic/transcriptomic approach to identify and clone the sulfotransferase cDNA.

Real-time daily fatigue, sleep, physical activity, and health-related fitness in adults with cerebral palsy.

Aim: To explore whether subgroups of adults with cerebral palsy (CP) with different fatigue diurnal profiles can be discerned, and to explore whether sleep, physical activity, or health-related fitness are associated with these profiles.

Method: Thirty-two adults (median age 29 years 8 months; range 20-54 years; 11 males, 21 females) with spastic CP (Gross Motor Function Classification System levels I-III) with physical activity-related fatigue complaints participated. Real-time fatigue and physical activity were assessed for 7 consecutive days by short message service text four times during the day and by wearing an accelerometer respectively.
