sCXCL16 as a prognostic biomarker for COVID-19 outcome.

As elevated levels of the soluble CXCL16 (sCXCL16) chemokine have been reported in severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients, this study examined whether sCXCL16 concentration on the first day of hospitalization predicted death in COVID-19 patients. A total of 76 patients with COVID-19 were admitted to the Military Hospital of Tunis, Tunisia, between October 2020 and April 2021, and later classified as survivors or nonsurvivors based on their outcomes. At admission, the groups were matched by age, gender, comorbidities, and the percentage of patients with moderate conditions.

Case Reports: Tick-borne relapsing fever was revealed by the presence of spirochetes in a blood sample to search malaria in two men, 24 and 31 year-old, returned from Mali.

[Role of splenectomy in the treatment of non-cirrhotic portal hypertension: about 3 cases].

Non-cirrhotic portal hypertension was first described by Guido BANTI in 1898 as a condition characterized by the association of portal hypertension with splenomegaly, anemia and healthy liver. The diagnosis was based on abdominal ultrasound, splenoportography and liver biopsy. Our study aimed to evaluate the role of splenectomy in non-cirrhotic portal hypertension.

DJINNI: A Novel Technology Supported Exposure Therapy Paradigm for SAD Combining Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality.

The present paper explores the benefits and the capabilities of various emerging state-of-the-art interactive 3D and Internet of Things technologies and investigates how these technologies can be exploited to develop a more effective technology supported exposure therapy solution for social anxiety disorder. "DJINNI" is a conceptual design of an augmented reality (AR) exposure therapy mobile support system that exploits several capturing technologies and integrates the patient's state and situation by vision-based, audio-based, and physiology-based analysis as well as by indoor/outdoor localization techniques. DJINNI also comprises an innovative virtual reality exposure therapy system that is adaptive and customizable to the demands of the experience and therapeutic progress.

Cellular Response to the high protein digestibility/high-Lysine (hdhl) sorghum mutation.

A high protein digestibility/high-lysine mutant P721Q (hdhl) with a multi-folded protein body morphology has been developed, with a 22kDa α-kafirin single point mutation having also been recently identified. Relatively little is known regarding the resulting cellular response in hdhl endosperm. The aim is to elucidate these biochemical changes.

Extra-Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor of the Greater Omentum: Unusual Case Report.

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors are the most common mesenchymal tumors of the gastrointestinal tract, originating from the interstitial cells of Cajal and most frequently expressing CD-117, a C-kit proto-oncogene, which can be detected immunohistochemically. Extra-gastrointestinal stromal tumors are neoplasms with similar immunohistological features arising outside the gastrointestinal tract with no connection to the gastric or intestinal wall.We report the case of a 61-year-old Moroccan man who presented with chronic abdominal pain along with progressive abdominal distension for the past last year.

Physiological and brain activity after a combined cognitive behavioral treatment plus video game therapy for emotional regulation in bulimia nervosa: a case report.

Background: PlayMancer is a video game designed to increase emotional regulation and reduce general impulsive behaviors, by training to decrease arousal and improve decision-making and planning. We have previously demonstrated the usefulness of PlayMancer in reducing impulsivity and improving emotional regulation in bulimia nervosa (BN) patients. However, whether these improvements are actually translated into brain changes remains unclear.

Expression of emotional state is considered to be a core facet of an individual's emotional competence. Emotional processing in BN has not been often studied and has not been considered from a broad perspective. This study aimed at examining the implicit and explicit emotional expression in BN patients, in the acute state and after recovery.

Different sucrose-isomaltase response of Caco-2 cells to glucose and maltose suggests dietary maltose sensing.

Using the small intestine enterocyte Caco-2 cell model, sucrase-isomaltase (SI, the mucosal α-glucosidase complex) expression and modification were examined relative to exposure to different mono- and disaccharide glycemic carbohydrates. Caco-2/TC7 cells were grown on porous supports to post-confluence for complete differentiation, and dietary carbohydrate molecules of glucose, sucrose (disaccharide of glucose and fructose), maltose (disaccharide of two glucoses α-1,4 linked), and isomaltose (disaccharide of two glucoses α-1,6 linked) were used to treat the cells. qRT-PCR results showed that all the carbohydrate molecules induced the expression of the SI gene, though maltose (and isomaltose) showed an incremental increase in mRNA levels over time that glucose did not.

Identification of plasmid-encoded extended spectrum beta-lactamases produced by a clinical strain of Proteus mirabilis.

Emergence and dissemination of multiresistant strain of Proteus mirabilis have made infections treatment more difficult that this bacterium is responsible. The aim of this study is to determine the implication of the enzymatic mechanism and to describe the properties of ESBLs (extended spectrum beta-lactamases). A clinical strain of Proteus mirabilis SM514 isolated in the intensive care unit at the Military hospital in Tunisia during the period 2004 was found to be highly resistant to cephalosporins and penicilins.

Rice amylopectin fine structure variability affects starch digestion properties.

Unlabelled: The possibility to identify or develop new rice cultivars with low glycemic response was investigated. Twelve rice cultivars with a narrow range of amylose contents were selected based on their wide variation in rapid viscoanalyzer (RVA) pasting breakdown to study the relationship between starch digestibility and amylopectin fine structure and pasting properties. Rice flour samples were cooked for in vitro digestibility analysis using the standard Englyst assay.

Cross-reactivity of antibodies against almond major protein (AMP, a legumin), the major almond allergen, with cereal proteins may cause problems in detecting almond contaminants in cereal products when antibody-based assays are used. Rabbit polyclonal IgG antiserum produced against AMP was used to test cross-reactivity with protein extracts from maize, a cereal commonly found in breakfast and snack foods. Gradient SDS-PAGE followed by Western blotting was performed, and two cross-reactive proteins were detected by chemiluminescence.

[Rupture of the low thoracic esophagus after blast trauma].

Closed traumatic rupture of the esophagus is uncommon. Early diagnosis and effective treatment are necessary to avoid death or serious illness. We report a case of a low thoracic rupture after blunt trauma diagnosed at the stage of esophago pleural fistula and mediastinal collection.

Potato flour viscosity improvement is associated with the expression of a wheat LMW-glutenin gene.

It has been previously shown that expression of a high-molecular-weight glutenin (HMW-GS) in transgenic wheat seeds resulted in the improvement of flour functional properties. In this study, potato flour viscosity was improved through a specific expression of a low-molecular-weight glutenin (LMW-GS-MB1) gene in tuber. The resulting construct was introduced into potato leaf explants (Solanum tuberosum cv Kennebec) through Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated gene transfer.

Molecular dissection of developmental behavior of plant height in rice (Oryza sativa L.).

A doubled haploid population of 123 lines from IR64/Azucena was used to dissect the developmental behavior and genotype by environment interaction for plant height by conditional and unconditional quantitative trait loci (QTL) mapping methods in rice. It was shown that the number of QTL detected was different at various measuring stages. Some QTL could be detected at all stages and some only at one or several stages.

Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency was found in 3.2% of the male population living in the urban area of Algiers. The deficient subjects originated from multiple geographic regions of Northern Algeria, with prevalence of individuals of Berber-Kabyle origin.

Twenty hemolytic accidents due to G6PD deficiency in Algeria are reported: 13 cases of favism, 2 cases of neonatal jaundice, one drug accident (aspirin), 4 of unknown cause. These accidents concern above all children, were clinically severe and required transfusion.
