Enhancement of neuronal plasticity by small-molecule therapeutics protects cognitive skills and also ameliorates progressive neurodegenerative pathologies like Alzheimer's disease (AD) and dementia. One such compound, a novel histone deacetylase 2 (HDAC2) inhibitor named JRM-28, was shown here to enhance dendritic strength, augment spine density, and upregulate post-synaptic neurotransmission in hippocampal neurons. The molecular basis for this effect correlates with JRM-28-induced upregulation of the transcription of cAMP response element-binding protein(CREB), induction of its transcriptional activity, and subsequent stimulation of expressions of CREB-dependent plasticity-associated genes, such as those encoding N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor subunit NR2A and the α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid (AMPA) receptor subunit GluR1.

Hydroxyapatite (HA) granules are frequently used in orthopedics and maxillofacial surgeries to fill bone defects and stimulate the regeneration process. Optimal HA granules should have high biocompatibility, high microporosity and/or mesoporosity, and high specific surface area (SSA), which are essential for their bioabsorbability, high bioactivity (ability to form apatite layer on their surfaces) and good osseointegration with the host tissue. Commercially available HA granules that are sintered at high temperatures (≥ 900 °C) are biocompatible but show low porosity and SSA (2-5 m/g), reduced bioactivity, poor solubility and thereby, low bioabsorbability.

Cardiovascular diseases bear strong socioeconomic and ecological impact on the worldwide healthcare system. A large consumption of goods, use of polymer-based cardiovascular biomaterials, and long hospitalization times add up to an extensive carbon footprint on the environment often turning out to be ineffective at healing such cardiovascular diseases. On the other hand, cardiac cell toxicity is among the most severe but common side effect of drugs used to treat numerous diseases from COVID-19 to diabetes, often resulting in the withdrawal of such pharmaceuticals from the market.

The aim of this work was to investigate how chemical functionalization affects the electronic properties of multi-walled carbon nanotubes, altering the electrophoretic deposition process: a method of choice for the fabrication of high quality, all-carbon nanotube (CNT) layers. Wet chemistry methods were applied to modify the surfaces of CNTs by insertion of various oxygen- and nitrogen-containing groups. Transmission electron microscopy revealed no significant changes in the material morphology, while X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy showed that changes in the chemical composition did not translate to the changes in the structure.

This review discusses the accumulated evidence that pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC) gene products as well as other pituitary neuropeptides derived from related genes (Proenkephalin, PENK; Prodynorphin, PDYN, and Pronociceptin, PNOC) can exert direct effects on B lymphocytes to modulate their functions. We also review the available data on receptor systems that might be involved in the transmission of such hormonal signals to B cells.

Repository corticotropin injection (RCI), a complex mixture of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) analogs and other pituitary peptides, has been found to suppress key aspects of gene expression and cellular function in human B lymphocytes in vitro. The present studies reveal that neither individual POMC peptides (α-MSH, ACTH, ACTH, β-endorphin) nor other related pituitary neuropeptides are sufficient to elicit these effects, even though specific receptors capable of transmitting signals from these peptides are expressed by human B cells. RCI's direct effects on human B cells may require complementary signals from multiple components of the preparation.

Physicochemical, electrochemical and biological performance of 4 types of all-carbon nanotube layers was studied. Higher oxidation state of carbon was responsible for micro-scaled uniformity of the layers and excellent electrical conductivity, while nitrogen containing functional groups yielded materials with anisotropy similar to natural tissues and reduced work function. All materials were cytocompatible with mammalian fibroblasts (viability >80%, cytotoxicity <3% at day 7) and human dermal fibroblast (viability of cells >70% at day 1), while reducing bacterial and cancer cells proliferation without adding any drug.

, a probiotic bacterium of food origin, has recently been demonstrated as a suitable strain for the production and in vivo delivery of therapeutically important proteins into the gut. We aimed to engineer recombinant cells producing/secreting REX binding proteins that have been described as IL-23 receptor (IL-23R) blockers and IL-23R antagonists suppressing the secretion of cytokine IL-17A, a pivotal step in the T-helper Th17-mediated pro-inflammatory cascade, as well as in the development of autoimmune diseases, including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). To reach this goal, we introduced cDNA sequences coding for REX009, REX115, and REX125 proteins into plasmid vectors carrying a Usp45 secretion signal, a FLAG tag sequence consensus, and a LysM-containing cA surface anchor (AcmA), thus allowing cell-surface peptidoglycan anchoring.
