Mechanical Aortic Valve Thrombosis Successfully Treated With Intravenous Thrombolytic Therapy: A Case Report.

Mechanical prosthetic valves, like all foreign bodies, are thrombogenic, requiring anticoagulation to avoid thrombosis and reduce the risk of catastrophic stroke. We reported a case of a 42-year-old female that developed mechanical valve thrombosis and was successfully treated with low infusion thrombolytic therapy using alteplase (tPA, tissue plasminogen activator).

Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring: Is 24 hours necessary?

Background: The variability of blood pressure (BP) makes any single measurement a poor indicator of a patient's true BP. Multiple studies have confirmed the superiority of ambulatory BP measurements over clinic BP measurements in predicting cardiovascular risk; however, this method presents the problem of patient acceptance as it causes frequent arm discomfort and sleep disturbance. We hypothesized that 6 h of daytime BP measurements would result in slightly higher BP readings, yet reveal similar clinical decision making when compared to 24 h of BP measurements.

Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States despite decades of advancement in its diagnosis and treatment. Because of the limitations of traditional risk stratification for heart disease, evaluation of the retinal vasculature has been proposed as an easily and safely measured adjunct to commonly used screening methods. This article provides a comprehensive review of the literature concerning the relationships between retinal microvascular abnormalities and coronary heart disease.
