Background: Dexmedetomidine reduces cerebral blood flow (CBF) in humans and animals. In animal investigations, cerebral metabolic rate (CMR) was unchanged. Therefore, the authors hypothesized that dexmedetomidine would cause a decrease in the CBF/CMR ratio with even further reduction by superimposed hyperventilation.
