Diversifying the chaplain workforce in hospital spiritual care departments and Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) programs is essential for meeting the needs of a religiously diverse population in the USA. We interviewed seven total participants, including two Somali Muslim chaplain students and their Muslim and Christian chaplain educators in one CPE program. Participants described their personal journeys and motivations for pursuing careers in healthcare chaplaincy, their impact on hospitalized patients, and the role of expanding perspectives for those with little prior exposure to Somali Muslim faith leaders.

Background: Despite the presence of COVID-19 epidemiologic data in Africa, there are gaps in the understanding of healthcare workers' concerns and fears early in the pandemic.

Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional multi-country pan-African qualitative survey case study on the perceived effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on healthcare workers in the continent focused specifically on personal safety and misinformation. The survey was distributed to 13 countries via snowball sampling of practitioners between April 22 and May 15, 2020.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of two predictive models, LACE and BOOST, in forecasting unplanned hospital readmissions among patients over 75 years old.
  • Data from 110 older patients were analyzed, revealing a readmission rate of 32.7%, with both models showing higher scores in patients who were readmitted.
  • The results indicated that while both models were statistically significant, they had poor predictive capabilities, with recent hospitalization noted as the most important predictor of readmission.

As coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) spreads across Africa, little is known about the impact of the pandemic on health-care workers (HCWs) in the region. We designed an anonymous survey distributed via e-mail and phone messaging to 13 countries through the African Hepatitis B Network. We obtained 489 analyzable responses.

Mutations in SLC34A1, encoding the proximal tubular sodium-phosphate transporter NaPi-IIa, may cause a range of clinical phenotypes including infantile hypercalcemia, a proximal renal Fanconi syndrome, which are typically autosomal recessive, and hypophosphatemic nephrolithiasis, which may be an autosomal dominant trait. Here, we report two patients with mixed clinical phenotypes, both with metabolic acidosis, hyperphosphaturia, and renal stones. Patient A had a single heterozygous pathogenic missense mutation (p.

Transition states for selenoxide elimination have been determined for a series of Se-substituted selenocysteine (RSeCys) derivatives that have potential use in the prevention and treatment of cancer, either directly or in conjunction with cisplatin (to reduce its nephrotoxic effects). Reduced activation barriers vs R=Me and R=Ph are found when the alkyl chain length is increased or when activating groups are para to the selenide. Ortho substitution of Lewis bases stabilizes the transition state by directly donating electron density to the selenoxide.
